BL and yaoi animations tend to have low budgets and subpar quality art and animation, which is why I took interest in this work.
The art and animation are sublime, but the story weighs it down SO terribly.
My understanding is that this work was adapted from another manga. Perhaps the source material is better, but this is strictly about the movie.
I will describe to you my understanding of each character's personalities:
Shun - He's gay
Mio - He's the orphan that the gay guy fell in love with
Eri - The sister that ships the gay, who is also gay herself
Suzu - The sister's gay partner
Sakurako - The straight
...
girl who fell in love with a gay man
What I'm getting at is that the personalities of these characters are dry, non-existent, and one-dimensional.
Combine that with the abnormal pacing of the story, and it becomes impossible to understand any of these character's motivations or actions.
In Mio's case, it did not make sense why he suddenly fell in love with a guy because the guy happened to feed him on two occasions.
In Shun's case, it did not make sense why he was scared of being with Mio despite Mio confessing his feelings to Shun, and Shun having rejected Sakurako in the past.
For that matter, Sakurako also came out of NOWHERE. There was NO build-up to the conflict surrounding her so when it came her time to shine, everything just FELL FLAT.
I actually just DON'T understand why they even love each other. There has been ZERO, NADA, ZILCH development on their relationship. My only understanding of their relationship is, "lol this dude fed him twice cos he fell in love at first sight and now they wanna bone lol"
WHAT?
BY THAT LOGIC, I SUPPOSE WE SHOULD ALL GO MARRY OUR SCHOOL CAFETERIA LADIES?
And... WHAT IS WITH ALL THE SEXUAL ASSAULT?
Don't get me wrong, I understand this is just a part of BL being BL but WHY IS THERE SO MUCH OF IT?
JUST CASUALLY PUSHING YOURSELF ONTO OTHERS LIKE IT'S NORMAL????
These types of BL continue to do such massive disservice to the LGBTQ+ community... from the casual sexual assault, to the "if you don't have sex it's not official!", to the "go consult a crossdresser at a bar if you need love advice", to the bottom and top dynamics, and ESPECIALLY THE "I was straight but now I'm gay for you XD".
Like dude please stop it's so embarassing
In summary, this entire thing felt like I was watching a story between individuals with the intelligence and emotional complexity of 10-year-olds that 12-year old me could have written and I wish to have my time refunded to me.
BUT HEY, AT LEAST THE ART'S PRETTY.
