When I began reading this I wasn't expecting a unique or interesting experience. I, probably just like everyone else was just looking for another fun isekai to pass the time. It's got "last boss" in its name for god's sake, that's not exactly an indication of originality. But when browsing through these countless monotonous stories, you sometimes stumble onto something that makes you think "Wow, this is actually really good." and this is one of those works.
At the start, this just sounds like another Overlord copy. A guy who was the top player in an MMO is suddenly summoned into the world of the game
...
as his character, overpowering every NPC in his way. But as the story progresses it reveals countless clever, original ideas and concepts while also staying true to itself and not sinking into the realm of forced subverted expectations or edginess. Instead of completely distancing itself from the usual tropes and worldbuilding of the genre, it embraces its flaws and provides answers to how these things would actually work or why they exist in the first place. Such as: why is there a level cap? What happened to the mind of the character when the mc took over? Why are certain 'monsters' persecuted despite their intelligence? And why are the demons so hellbent on attacking humanity?
Not only are these answers, well, there, but also genuinely interesting and clever. And despite its high quality, it never becomes heavy or a chore to read. It never drags, and the cool stuff is mixed in with a healthy amount of humour and satisfying overpoweredness.
Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta!: Kokuyoku no Haou won't make you think, and it won't give you a new perspective on anything. But it will give you a fun time and several moments of "Wow, that's really cool.". Worth a read if you've ever enjoyed anything from the isekai genre. Strong 7.
