A sign of affection was a cute, if simple romance story that shone in it's direction and endearing cast. The directing here is definitely what I'd want to highlight. The pacing and music and cinematography made scenes very impactful, and the whole story felt very consistent in tone. Lot's of sequences stuck more memorably in my mind than they would from a similar show in length and themes.
Yuki is a very adorable protagonist. Her introspective narration is relatable, and a great guide through the show. She's endearing, and it's good that the audience can quickly fall in love with her, as it makes us more

empathetic and excited to watch her and the shows core relationship grow. The show struggles somewhat with it's other characters. There is a friend character and her love interest who are a breath of fresh air, as they seem like real people and are very often helpful to the main characters. There's a very tropey childhood best friend who I loved but others may be more mixed on. There's also a side couple who truly feels forgotten about, with a friends to lovers story that feels incredibly disconnected from the main plot and sort of just feels like it's there to add drama despite the fact it doesn't really cause any. In the 12 episodes, Yuki talks to the 2 people in that relationship a total of three times, and it overall feels like it's introduced too late to be very impactful.
There's also Itsuomi, the main male love interest, who I admit I wasn't hugely fond of. He's clearly great for Yuki, the writers handled that well, their scenes are sweet and the affection they develop feels genuine, but I think people tend to connect more with romances when they see the appeal of the characters, and Itsuomi did not do it for me. Maybe it's the dub voice actor, but his quiet tone and excessive chillness just didn't hook me. But that's probably a me problem.
It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was a nice sweet romance for anyone looking for that sort of thing.
