2021 will be the 10 year anniversary of the original release of this OVA.

And I still don't have a proper Prototype anime.

To say I'm bitter would be an understatement.

while Fate Prototype definitely has similar themes and ideas that have been already explored in the original Stay Night series, I feel like there is enough difference that Prototype could appeal to a very different and much wider audience than the original Stay Night could (And no, not just because there are quite a few pretty bishounen boys to look at or it might appeal to the shoujo/josei crowd), as while the premise is ... somewhat the same, there is enough differences between characters like Ayaka to Shirou, Arthur to Arturia, etc. and even the way the rules of this holy grail war is set up that you could tell a much different story.

TM absolutely knows that Prototype has potential, that Arthur and Proto Cu are very popular among fans, and the success of Fate Prototype Fragments as both an LN and drama CD, but also what has been explored of these characters in FGO and the subsequent merchandise that has come shows that they are not blind to knowing that people are curious to this idea.

My only hope is that TM is still trying to figure out how to tell a different story with Prototype and Prototype Fragments than the story that was told in Stay Night, and that the delay of a proper Fate Prototype anime is due to this.

I was going to ignore this show because I am actually getting very sick of the amount of ecchi and fanservice seen in anime and only gave it a shot because of Gigguk's review on youtube. Then gave it the three episode test, then ended up binging the whole thing... then I waited a few days and rewatched it again just to see if it wasn't a fluke the first time around.

Let me be frank. This show is trash. But it KNOWS it is trash, and it knows you're probably trash.

And that leads to a lot of self aware humour I was genuinely ... was not expecting, when Gigguk says this is the "first hentai sitcom" he was actually not kidding. The only other thing I can genuinely compare it to is the webcomic Oglaf. Sex is definitely a main focus of it, but it is not necessarily there to get your rocks off, so to speak.

The art style is actually genuinely quite nice, animation is fluid, the OP and EN songs are really great and I've actually got both on my phone now. Characters are okay, I've definitely met worse ecchi protagonists, ended up falling MUCH more in love with certain background characters then the leads, but in no way hated them. and while it seems like a simple premise merely there to help get your rocks off, you come away actually surprised with the amount of world building and thought that went into it.

There's definitely some lazy corners cut, such as nearly every female of the species having breasts and being conventionally attractive (however, Mitsue's presence and the idea she is actually revered by other working girls, and episode 7 also shows that there are exceptions to this rule with alligator girls, frog girls, etc. to the point you can actually kind of tell it was intended as a joke to how female of all species always look attractive by our standards), but overall, I've definitely seen worse.

There's even thought put into female clients and what they might seek from a working boy in episode 3, as well as mentioned of possible LGBT+ themes (though this is iffy at best) and just the fact it was even acknowledged was surprising for me. Would DEFINITELY watch or read a spinoff with the same premise but it's women reviewing incubus boys.

Genuinely surprising and humourous gem that actually offers something new to the table, instead of rinse and repeating the same old ecchi and hentai tropes.
