1. The first 12 ep. are actually very good (hence my 8 star rating). There's a lot character building for Fushi through his experiences. The first arc (in the tundra) was kind of the start point of the whole thing while the Ninnanah arc is used to build into the Gugu arc. Very good because the MC is on a meaningful journey.
2. Some people may say the side characters are not worth getting interested in because we kind of know who will die. I disagree. For example, Gugu was a very in depth side character that had a profound impact on Fushi in his
...
growth. I feel like Gugu was made so that Fushi would actually experience loss for the first time since he became more sentient.
3. I just started the prison arc and I am going to be very blunt: its horrid. Fushi at this point should be more alive and aware of his situation. I'll list some problems with just the 1st ep. of the prison arc:
a) He has no goal (which is fine since thats his character) but his decisions all feel souless. When he says he does not want to compete in the tournament, he gives in 1 minute later. I also feel like his character lost a lot of depth when he gets "angry" at the girl who lures him and pinora on the ship. Angry is an overstatement; its lukewarm at best and he does not seem to care. Moreover, his objective Pinora was a ray of light that he might actually want to do something. But no, he lets himself get distracted by the tournament and such. Which leads me to my second problem.
b) He wants to get stronger, yet he is unwilling to do anything. Yes, it makes sense for him to be scared to kill people. Very normal. But theres no growth. He literally being chased by killer blobs that don't care. He keeps saying "please get scared" everytime. "It must work this time even if it failed 4 times already". This is just setting the stage for pathetic MC when this character's gimmick is literally GROWTH. Hell, he doesn't even seem angry about Gugu dying. He's just like, "welp he died. I'm gonna be sad for half an episode and then beg my killer enemies to be scared of a bunch of weapons stuck to my chest".
c) Pathetic MC was not so pathetic in the first 12 ep because he actually grows and DOES SOMETHING. prison arc is pathetic MC because he does nothing... literally lets himself get used (he doesn't understand but I don't get why he lets these kids influence him when they were the ones who got him into that mess) Again, he kind of just shrugs off that they screwed him over with 2 frowny faces. Like, hes mad, tries to shake Tonari off and she says 1 thing and all of a sudden Fushi is balls deep into whatever Tonari wants him to do. It's really damn hard to watch
Edit: after finishing the rest of the season, yes the prison arc is still sh*t. Same comments: no growth. Just cries and complains when his comrades/friends die. For example, he gets the shot to kill Hayase (who you can tell is gonna keep getting in his way) and doesn't. Spoiler!! She holds Tonari hostage. Even after that, he lets her go and she survives.... like.... why.....
Last ep. is the best out of the whole arc (which is sad because the arc is about 6 ep. long and all of them were horrible)
TLDR: ep 1-12 is amazing. Lots of character development and discovery for the MC. Prison arc is hot dogsh*t. Its so damn slow and the MC for some reason, becomes even more clueless and useless than the Gugu arc.
