This movie is largely a recreation of the first 6 episodes of the original series. Though later movies in the series do start to diverge and become their own unique story, this movie is incredibly faithful to the original. There are some minor changes and some scenes got cut, but overall it's basically like watching the first 6 episodes of NGE in HD.
The animation is amazing. I'm normally a huge fan of old school animation from the 90s and early 2000s. Hand drawn stuff that looks like little to no computers were involved. CGI is a huge turn off to me. But in spite of
...
the super fancy animation with some CGI usage, I actually really love it's animation. I'm normally not a fan of sleek and modern looking animation compared to nostalgic old school animation, but damn does this movie look good.
Aside from the updated animation I don't have a lot to talk about this movie, aside from little gripes about the minor changes. They cut one of my favorite moments of foreshadowing in the first two episodes, they did replace it with a new bit of similar foreshadowing to hint at the same thing a little bit later in, but I liked the old one better. It's very small so it hardly matters, but for the record I'm not a huge fan of the changes but I also don't care about them that much. Overall a really solid remake of the first 6 episodes.

Overall a really solid show. I do feel there's some bled potential here and there, but overall it's pretty good. The story is interesting and it the twists it presents are pretty good. I'd say this show could have the potential to be really, really good but it suffers a few drawbacks. Ultimately it still comes together quite nicely.
Since there's 15 main characters, plus a handful of recurring side characters, and only 24 episodes you can probably guess at the pacing. It's fast. Each character's personal story arc gets about one episode. One episode doesn't seem like enough to fully flesh out a character, but
...
Bokurano does a pretty good job of it honestly. Each individual character's story feels like a complete little package. I am personally a bigger fan of a slow burn approach where characters develop and grow gradually over the course of the series, but the way Bokurano handles it's characters to introduce and explore so many characters in a short amount of timeworks quite well.
I think the biggest gripe that comes to mind is the action sequences. Granted shows like this are more about the characters, the plot, and the drama. It's not about the action. But you can have both and other shows have had both. That's not to say Bokurano's action sequences are entirely awful, but the mecha battles are done with CGI and don't have much interesting choreography to them. This isn't a huge deal breaker because the main draw to the show was never mecha action, but it would've been nice to see more interesting battles especially since I think some of the mecha designs in this show are actually really unique and interesting. This what I meant by bled potential, there are some very unique and interesting mecha designs but the battles are often very short and simple.
Ultimately I feel if action is a low priority for you and if you enjoy the sort of short story approach it has to introducing and exploring it's characters this show could easily be a 9/10. Personally I do like action a lot and the action felt too lacking for me. I also found it hard personally to get invested in the characters since I was given so little time to get to know them individually. Overall I still liked the plot and the twists it had were really interesting so it's still a solid 8/10 despite me having a few pretty significant issues with it.

So like a million other people have said this movie is heavy on the artistic elements and it gets very abstract and hard to follow.
This movie is basically everything from NGE but to cranked up to an 11, both the good and the bad. It is chock full of powerful, memorable, and iconic scenes that you've probably seen referenced somewhere before.
The action sequences in the first act are some of the best in the series. Every time there's a brutal action sequence in Evangelion I think there's no way the next one can be even more visceral, but EoE succeeds in delivering yet another
...
gut-wrenchingly violent action sequence which was easily my favorite part of the movie on my initial viewing.
The second act is where the abstract and artistic sequences begin in a similar vein to some of the surreal and abstract sequences from the series, but again taken above and beyond to an extreme. This is where things got really confusing to me and I assume most casual viewers as well. That said even if all this goes over your head, like it did mine, that's kind of part of the point. I don't think you're supposed to get it. You're suppose to just witness it and then try to find some meaning in it on your own.
Overall I feel like movie, or rather the series as a whole, could be a lot more accessible if they addressed important plot points better at some point. Honestly even the second act of EoE could've made enough sense to most viewers if they had just keyed us in on the major plot points at sometime during the series. Again this is intentional. They are obscure and indirect about the plot on purpose because they want you to find it on your own and put it together yourself, it's a creative/artistic choice. And I respect that, but I feel like I would've gotten more out of it if I had understood at least half of what was going on. I just don't feel like they give the viewer enough to work with. I really dig the idea of being more indirect with the plot and making the viewer figure it out of their own, but you can't put a puzzle together when they only give you half the pieces. All that said, it's still an amazing movie even if most of it went over my head the first time I watched it.

So sometimes this OVA is called episode 10.5 because that's roughly where it fits into the main series.
I don't have much to say without spoilers, it's basically just a normal episode of Elfen Lied. It's kind of awkward to have it separate from the main series, but whatever it adds to the plot. It provides some extra background and fills in a blank spot in the main character's history.
I give it a 9/10 even though I gave the main series a 10/10 just because its not really a stand alone OVA or anything super special. It's just episode 10.5, which is nice and it's a
...
good episode that adds to the main story, but giving it it's own separate 10/10 feels wrong.

Ight. So like. I can't say much about this without spoiling it, but I'll try to say why I didn't like it without spoiling it much.
Basically I liked where the series ended. The ending of the main series was were it felt right. It ended on a somber and bitter note which made sense for the main character's arc and the way the story was going. The ending of the main series was a great and fitting ending for the story.
This OVA continues forward past that ending and presents a new ending with a wholly different tone. I'm not a fan of the direction this
...
OVA goes with it and I felt like the ending presented to the original series was more fitting.
It feels to me like the ending in this OVA spits on and undoes the ending the main series left on that I felt was the perfect place for it to end. However, it's not like this ending is non-canon or something. The main series' ending did set this up so it's not like this OVA just comes out of the blue.
Even though I disliked the new ending it gave, it was nice seeing the characters again and seeing where they were at so it wasn't an entirely bad experience for me.
Overall it depends entirely how you felt about the main series' ending. If you liked where it left off than this OVA will probably disappoint you. If you were unsatisfied or upset with the main series ending this OVA might be exactly what you wanted.

When I first watched this anime I didn't think too much of it. It was good. It wasn't super memorable, but it still had some kick to it and was more than worth the while watching it. It wasn't until I watched a lengthy review about this anime that I really started to appreciate what it has to offer and revisited it. I still base my rating primarily on that first viewing, which is 8/10.
So it's a survival/elimination game style story. Personally I'm not a huge fan of stuff like that. I don't like the idea that I know characters are going to die because
...
it tends to make me not invest into them emotionally. That said I think a lot of the characters are pretty well written and have a lot of personality to them so if you can get around the fact that their fates are basically predetermined than there's a lot of substance here.
The story, it's characters, and it's themes are all pretty solid. One of the best praises I can give it is that it has good balance and comes together well. A lot of stories are either too confusing and never wrap up nicely or are too transparent and in your face with over explaining themselves to you. The story and it's presentation here are both really solid and it comes together in a way that makes sense and feels right.
There are some deeper themes and more powerful elements to the show, but admittedly I didn't really pick up on them too much or they didn't really stand out to me in my first viewing. But looking back on it after watching a more in depth analysis I can see that there's a bit more to it than what initially met my eyes with this anime which is nice.
Overall this anime is pretty good. It could easily be higher than 8 depending on your tastes. Personally the main things holding it back for me is the fact we know from the start only one person gets to live. For me that prevents me from ever really growing attached to anyone outside the main cast since their deaths are basically guaranteed. However in spite of that fundamental problem I have with this type of story I still liked this anime.

So this would be an easy 10 if not for two main things. First of all my experience with it was largely dampened since I went in with full spoilers. If you don't know any spoilers yet, watch it now before you ruin it for yourself. The second is that the anime ends on a big fat cliff hanger and it expects you to go read the manga afterwards which is fine I guess, but it's still kinda annoying for people who want a full experience from the anime.
Basically put Berserk is a powerful story that hits all the right notes to me. It's amazingly
...
well crafted and it has such tremendous raw emotion to it. It tells its story so well and it's just so hard hitting. Berserk earns it's reputation in spades. It's so somber and painful and that's what makes it such a powerful experience. There's few if any anime or manga like it that manage to portray such poignant and vibrantly agonizing emotions like Berserk does and Berserk does it so elegantly. I really feel like the less is said about it the better. Just see and experience it for yourself. I really, really wish I went into it blind. I would have a lot more to say and a lot more feelings about it if I had.
As far as this adaption goes it's pretty damn good. I would kill for a full adaptation of the story in this style. The animation is nice, but they do use panning still shots sometimes to save budget a bit much. It's not too awful, but still. The art style is nice, a lot of people say it doesn't compare to the manga and that's true. The manga is beautiful and it would be hard for any animation to match it. But the animation of this adaptation is still great in it's own way. I think where this anime really shines as an adaptation is the sound track. It's perfect. The music from this anime is so fitting and so good. It's just so damn good.
Overall if you want to properly experience Berserk you should read the manga, but if you don't have time to this anime is fine as a stand alone experience as long as you can accept the fact that it ends on a massive cliff hanger. If you're not sure, watch the anime and if it leaves you wanting more go read the manga.

So Elfen Lied has a ton of glaring flaws. I give it a 10/10 based solely on the feelings it instilled in me and the excitement I got from watching it. Not because I think it's an particularly good and well made anime. Just one that really stuck with me.
Elfen Lied was a rush to me. I watched the first episode late in the evening one day and it had me hooked instantly. I watched half the show then and there until it was the nearly the break of dawn. I fell asleep because I was literally too tired to stay up, slept like 4
...
hours, then instantly came back to finish the show. I constantly needed to see what happened next. I can't say for certain the show was a good show, but I can say it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I kept saying, "I'll stop when I get to a good stopping point", but there was never a good stopping point.
So before I get into why I liked it I want to point out some of the most apparent flaws. First of all it is an incomplete adaptation. The story covers about half of what the manga covers and they wrap it up early with a unique early ending. One side effect of this is that there's some story threads that are left totally hanging. Nothing too huge or experience ruining, but they start up some mysteries or story lines that never get explored or resolved since the anime ends early. However as a whole I think it works out fine, I don't think that the abrupt cut off of the story is actually that bad. Another major flaw that applies to the manga as well is the excessive fanservice. Don't get me wrong, I like it when a show isn't afraid to be raunchy and explicit, but goddamn does Elfen Lied overdo it. Especially for a show trying to take itself seriously and develop tension.
Ok with that out of the way with I can say why I actually really liked it. Basically Elfen Lied does the best job of creating tension of any show I've watched so far. Granted my library of stuff I've watched isn't huge so that isn't saying a whole lot, but Elfen Lied had me feeling serious fear, anxiety, and constant uneasiness throughout the whole show. They do this with a bunch of tonal shifting. I don't wanna get too much into it because that would be mild spoilers. But basically there's this constant threat of violence, but in spite of that the show will try to act light hearted at times. But even during these funny or cute scenes there's this constant looming threat of brutal violence around every turn. The whole show has this constant feeling of impending doom like everything is about to go wrong at anything second. On top of that the characters, or at least some of them, are written well enough and given enough personality that I really cared about them and didn't want to see them eviscerated. I constantly had to see what happened next, I had to know who was gonna make it and who was gonna die horribly. The show leads up to some of the most painful and gut-wrenching scenes I've ever seen and for that reason it will stick with me for a long time to come.
Overall it has it's flaws. It's story and themes on their own aren't amazing, it's got some plot holes left over from the big cut the anime makes on the manga, and it hypersexualizes it's female characters. But the way it builds tensions and the sheer brutality that it leads up to make it a powerful and memorable experience to me.
Oh yeah I also like the animation. It's nice. It's got that early 2000s vibe that I totally dig.

So I wanna start by saying that NGE for me is a 10, but I don't think by any means it's a perfect or even that good anime.
So on my initial watching of it what stuck with me the most was the action, the mystery, and the animation. The characters felt weirdly presented and ultimately a lot of the show and it's themes didn't really get through to me. But the sheer brutality of the action sequences, the mysteries that were never really spelled out for you that you kind of just had to piece together on your own, and the stunning old school animation
...
were what made me love it. Based on that initial viewing I would've given it either an 8 or a 9, hard to say. It did something which is fairly rare for me which is it made me want more. Normally I watch shows one episode at a time over a couple weeks and when they are done I move on to the next one. NGE I watched in only a couple sittings and when it ended I wanted more of it. That alone would have me giving it a pretty good score in spite of some apparent flaws and problems I had with it which brings me to my big issue I have with NGE.
So my main issue is that I feel like the show is too obscure with how it tries to present it's story, characters, and themes. Don't get me wrong, I respect the artistic direction it takes and I hate it when shows are too up front and transparent about stuff. But like I said, on my initial viewing I didn't fully understand half of what I had seen. And maybe that's part of the allure. The confusing and open to interpretation nature of it lets the viewer draw their own conclusions to a degree. Which sounds nice on paper, but I feel like NGE laid it on too thick and didn't give the viewer enough to work with in many cases. This is a pretty huge flaw and honestly I think for a casually viewer this might even make it a kind of subpar experience since it's more than reasonable to walk away from the show with just a confused "Okay, but why?" attitude especially with all the rampant praise the show gets.
However, after I watched it I went and looked more into it. I read wiki articles, watched in depth breakdown videos, and took the time to really get into what this show had to offer. After that I rewatched it with all that I had learned in mind and was able to really dig into it and see what it had to offer. I still don't think it's perfect, but it's rare that I would ever care enough about a show to put this much effort into it. Overall the time I spent with the series and the feelings I got from it were enough for me to say it was a 10/10 experience. Mind you I don't consider 10/10 perfect as perfection isn't a real thing. I consider 10/10 something that really felt special and unique that will stick with me for a long time. And all that is true of NGE (to me at least).
