Both series have a powerful, heavily military-focussed "Empire" (Barsburg or Brittanian), trying to take over the world. Both have rampant imperialism, loyal-to-the-death soldiers, and so on, and this is a major theme. Additionally, both empires are portayed in a somewhat good light in the first episode, although this quickly changes- our protagonists fight the oppression, if in slightly different ways. But other than the similarities between the content of the two series, I'd also recommend them based on the cliffhanger-type nature of the ending of each episode, and... I'm trying to find a word for the general feel of them. It's not quite "feel-good", that would be wrong. But both anime certainly have their high points, their Crowning Moments of Awesome, and their heartfelt blows to the main characters when it all goes wrong. There's a real sense of empathy there, and above all, that's why I think you should watch this anime.

Log Horizon

Both do involve people being stuck in a game, but the tone is completely non-similar. Log Horizon is close, if not fully, to a comedy, and has random ecchi thrown in as well. To me, it's far better paired with .hack//Legend of the Twilight, one of the lighter in the .hack franchise, and one far more focused on comedy, adventure, etc. To me the tone of LH and .hack//LOTT are quite similar and a far better match than the frequently suggested SAO.

Accel World
add

Hack and Accel world are quite alike with using the game concept, whilt in Hack the character is trapped and accel world it is optional to join and leave they both have their playing cards. In accel world you are bound by loosing your points in which when happens you loose the application and the ability to play the game, all memory of it and can never install it again so your still grasped around the neck carefully. Hack is about someone trapped in a game who cannot log off, essentially trapped like in a cage as he searches for a way to leave the world. I admit im not into the game genre so i have issues finding much to say about either but these two felt quite a like to me and also are one of the only series i found tolerable in this genre so as a outsider to the genre i think they are both worth giving a shot if you like the genre and enjoyed one or the other.

GetBackers
add

Get Backers and .hack//SIGN have a similarity with characters and an initial plot. MacubeX and Tsukasa are both questioning their existence. In Get Backers, however, MacubeX takes his depression to an extreme; while in Tsukasa's case you get a small picture of a bigger problem. Both anime are entertaining in their own right, though Get Backers, not centered around a depressed main character, is humorous; and .hack//SIGN, while centered around a lone speculative child, is more thought-provoking. If you enjoy one you will enjoy how the other looks at the possibility in a different light.

Sword Art Online

It's almost certainly been said before now, but this recommendation is an absolute no-brainer. If you'd already seen one of these, watching the other surely brought this comparison to mind almost immediately. These two stories share so many elements -- they each take many pages from the same book... great book it is, mind you. You have the main character that's stuck in an online game. Uneasy alliances are forged. Strange happenings abound. There are even some commonalities in the shows' visual design. "So what's left to make me want to watch the one of these I HAVEN'T seen," you ask? There ARE differences, and they take two very similar shows in two rather different directions. While .hack takes more the form of a mystery, preferring to keep you watching by taking you from one oddity to the next. SAO leans more toward action and offers clear, shocking reveals. .hack's main character questions who to trust and why, SAO's whether they should trust at all, and how to even do so. .hack does suffer slightly from age, and SAO from a spot or two of questionable writing. Regardless, both are interesting and entertaining, and well worth watching, particularly if you are a fan of what either brings to the table.

Set in a similar world of magic and classes, the environment of these two shows seem very similar. The hold many of the same elements, such as joining parties and guilds and growing stronger. While .hack//roots is more serious, Fairy Tale is very relaxed and quick paced to keep you interested.

Both take place mostly in a virtual reality MMO game. In both series, strange events occur such as people going into comas (in .hack), people dying in the real world if they die in the game (in SAO), and people being unable to log out (in both). I think that if you like one, you will probably like the other.

Accel World
add

These sci-fi anime are about massively popular (VR)MMOs and a main character meeting a very mysterious player, eventually having his/her life turned upside down as a result of meeting/becoming friends with said person. Another trait they have in common is focusing on both the game and the problems of the real world directly caused by either "The World" MMO or the Accel World.

Game to anime translations, both Resident Evil and the Hack Trilogy will appeal to both gaming and action junkies. The familiar faces and console atmosphere in both shows make them the ideal partners. I highly recommend both playing and watching the accompanying games and shows to these movies, but geeks will lap up the battles in both.

Both are, essentially, meditations on a very specific moment (or, well, series of moments) rather than plot-driven stories. They’re more poetry, in that sense, than narrative, focusing on the emotional truths of a given scenario (how quickly does change happen? how does distance affect love?) more than the actions of that scenario—though they both relay those emotions almost exclusively by the actions of the characters rather than with lots of heavy monologuing.

Zetsuen no Tempest

Two young men get wrapped up in strange happenings that threaten their lives and the world around them. The main characters in both series are friends, but at the same time, they're entirely different. What they want is different. How they want to achieve it goes against the others beliefs. Can they put their differences aside to work together and save the world, or will their bonds fall apart? Will there be betrayal, or worse yet, death? You have to watch both to find out. Zetsuen no Tempest and No. 6 are not entirely identical, but when it comes to their characters, they're quite similar.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but I think these two are a good pair for each other. Both follow a male teenager protagonist who lives in a corrupt society and wants to change it for the better. They both deal with the issue of ethically as they may lead the viewer to question whether the all of the methods the protagonists and other characters use to fulfill their goals are necessarily the best way to go about handling the situation. Anyway, they are both interesting and thought-provoking.

A dystopian controlled society masquerading as a utopia is pretty much a science fiction trope. Nevertheless, there are many and varied ways to present the theme. These two anime are quite different takes on a very similar topic.

Both shows involve a system set in place to monitor citezins in the future. This system watched each person almost constantly and is supposedly making the world a better and more peaceful place. The main character in both shows finds out that isn't quite true and what they were told about their society all their lives is wrong. Both shows involve groups that wish to make the system obsolete and get revenge for what the system did to them as well.

Both plots feature dystopias in which society, following an apocalyptic event and threatened by an epidemic, resorts to isolating and discriminating against those who are infected. The heroes of each anime, Sion in "No. 6" and Shu in "Guilty Crown," are both entangled in attempts to overthrow the governing system and ultimately faced with morally conflicting decisions in spite of their initially timid natures. Althought character dynamics between the two shows may differ as "No. 6" focuses on the relationship between two male protagonists while "Guilty Crown" includes a male and female lead as well as several side relationships, the two are nonetheless mutually appealing for their humane character developments and moral storyline.

Both end up with a person that cares about them, more than they realise. Both of them are great action anime, while not tottaly focusing on the action. They have great story lines, and are a reallly great series. Also both will make you sob at the end, lul.

In both shows the main character discovers he's immortal and has to flee or else they'd become the subject of some cruel experiments. I recommend it one way because Pupa's plot doesn't make sense, while Ajin's storyline is coherent and engaging. so if you liked Pupa go ahead and give Ajin a try.

These are both shows that think excessive gore is equals horror. Both these show are condensed versions of their source material that rush and compress the material into something that is really unsatisfying to watch. The plots are quite different with Corpse Party being about a group of students trying to unravel a curse and Pupa is about a girl that turns into a monster that eats her brother so she doesn't murder other people. Corpse Party has a little bit of a plot even in it is compressed. Pupa skips around to the point of incoherency. Pretty much if you're just looking for violent anime with some really inappropriate fanservice then try either of these titles, although be warned the gore in Pupa is heavily censored.

Both of these anime are about young people that are suddently infected by human-consuming parasites/viruses. Both are fairly gory shows that feature a person who suddenly becomes a human-eating monster and have to cope with their new lives. Pupa's plot is very incoherent though while Tokyo Ghoul makes a lot more sense, so if you liked Pupa you'll defintiely enjoy Tokyo Ghoul.

Both are dark action-packed shows which features vampires, demons, and similar beast. Of course this includes the protagonist of each show, which is either a half-demon (DMC) or a full-blown vampire (Hellsing Ultimate). Said protagonists happen to be a tad too overpowered, so expect a lot of one-sided fights. Another thing in common is how the plot is not precisely deep in both shows, so if you liked one and you're looking for another mindless action show with plenty of asskicking go ahead and check the other. You'll enjoy it.
