This anime is amazing. Hands down worthy of a 10 in my book.
I don't think there's another anime with such a great contrast between the happy go-lucky moments and the deep, dark s*** that happens in this anime. All I can say is that I'm glad the season ended so that I could binge watch the final 8 episodes because I just couldn't take the cliffhangers week after week anymore.
Here's what I think this anime did so great: I don't know if any of you have ever had an experience of near-drowning, but this is kind of what it's like. You're in this big body
...
of water, having to swim to stay afloat, you're not that good at it and start to get tired - your head goes underwater. You realize you can't stop swimming, and try to keep going, you can't - you're too tired. Panic immediately starts to set in, you just think "Oh my god, I just want to stop swimming ... but I can't..I'm going to die."
That's what happens to Subaru in this anime. He's transported to this fantasy world that is supposed to be great and enjoyable (like swimming, oddly), but devolves into this absolute nightmare. I literally got to feel as he was broken and didn't know what the heck to do, and watch that desperation set in.
Luckily for Subaru, there are great characters in this anime and he's able to keep going. I'll even say that I originally didn't like Ram and Rem, thought "great - here come the loli's." But even that was a great piece of this anime.
The villains were incredible, Petelgeuse truly came off as if he had lost his freaking mind, they nailed it spot on.
Normally I would never even talk about the OP/ED in a review (does no one else follow the 90 second intro skip?), but even those were good. The opening is pretty dang good as far as anime openings go, and I loved the ending. I may have actually sat through it at the end of almost every episode.
Overall, a truly great anime with tons of action, drama, feels, with no-holds-barred on gore, which gave it realism for me.
So, with all that said - why or who may not like re:zero? (In my opinion)
-People who don't like the "transported to a fantasy world trope"
-People who primarily enjoy slice of life anime (I routinely find myself hating all of their stuff, so I can see why they would hate mine, I guess)
-People who don't like idyllic romanticizing/"irrational" love of heroines (Emilia).
*Sorry, I find it hard to believe people haven't looked at someone and been immediately attracted to them, and then subsequently thought the things they did were cute and nice. Particularly if you were alone in a new fantasy world.
-Anime critics
This was a series I found myself watching in awe/empathy/feeling/whatever, not critically thinking/calculating "Hrmm, if I was transported to a fantasy world and this was going on this is what I would do/should be done". The point of this anime is that a nobody (a NEET) is transported to a fantasy world. They're not going to take an optimal route, they couldn't do that in the real world. And if you were seemingly the only one transported to a fantasy world (particularly being Japanese/knowing anime), wouldn't you think *you* were there for a special purpose, or have a special power?
That's why Re:Zero is a 10/10 masterpiece in my books, in its own right it fully accomplished what it wanted to do. It had a great initial buy-in where I feel like it laid everything out, and I never felt short-changed by the series.

Another harem that starts off good in the first few episodes, but runs out of steam and ends poorly in my opinion.
If you like a monotone loli taking front and center in the storyline you could probably get a 7 or 8 out of the anime. I don't, and it really drug the enjoyment down to a 5, or mediocre. Not bad, but really not what I wanted. Could've dropped around episode 8 or so.
Edit: Apparently the review needs to be longer to tell someone they'll get what they're bargaining for if they like the monotone loli archetype, or it's going to fall short if
...
they wanted something a bit more energetic, appealing, or relatable.

Irredeemable. On the flip side, I will say I showed the point of no return to my friend, who was like "Wow, that actually seems really interesting." I just really didn't like Akane and the beliefs that played out.
And that's really what this anime will hinge on: do you like Akane, or no? If you don't, for the love of God do not watch this anime. For any/all posts that say "But Shinya Kougami is cool/interesting" - it's not worth it; Akane is definitely a driving factor in the story.
I will say the plot definitely has interesting twists and moments, but it'll really hinge on
...
how much you like that kind of futuristic society. Do you like it/find it interesting, or does it vex you? If you've ever searched in vain trying to find movies about real freedom and independence, then you probably won't be satisfied with everything that plays out in this anime.
If you like it, watch it; it'll be a piece of work that is constructed and it's put together decently. But if you don't like it, then don't watch it. If you start finding yourself more than slightly dissatisfied, I would drop it.

Actually, I feel like this a really easy anime to review. And because of that, I'm going to make it short (easy to read), and still what would have been immensely helpful to me.
If you don't like the relationship between Kojo and Yukina, it doesn't change. Drop the anime. I really don't like to drop anime because usually there are redeeming qualities and I want to know how everything plays out. But in my opinion, their relationship really is a deal breaker.
Otherwise, this is going to fit the bill of your other "powerful protagonist series". I enjoy these kinds of series, and excluding Yukina and
...
Kojo, this would have been no exception. Kojo is cool, there's action, excitement, I definitely feel like the plot/whatever is original enough, and it's enjoyable. Something I would want to watch.
If you don't enjoy the powerful protagonists, and you don't enjoy Yukina, then definitely don't watch this anime. If you just don't like their relationship, I really wouldn't recommend it, I would just drop it. Otherwise, this is a really solid show to enjoy watching.
As a final note, WOW, the front page reviews are novels. If you'll just trust me guys, really, it's simple.

While looking through the list of my anime and the few that I've remembered well enough to rate, I wondered why I gave Golden Time such a low score.
After I revisited the page I remembered why this series fell short. The plot device was too forced. Banri's Amnesia really didn't make him likable, more than a few times I had to sit there and just think "wtf is going on here."
As others have pointed out, a fair amount of drama occurs, things break down, and at that point I'm just thinking to myself "God damn it." It didn't make the anime more enjoyable or give
...
it any more depth.
I will say that I did really like Koko, I enjoy animes that have ladies. The bouquet scene was definitely funny, and throughout the anime she stayed beautiful and enjoyable.
At the end of the day, I feel like the forced plot and everything that comes with it just made the anime irredeemable. At the end, I just couldn't feel satisfied, I was just asking "Why?". That's why it's a 4, because there's just not a good aftertaste of it.
I will say that if you're able to overlook the forced plot the Amnesia creates (the biggest part), and the drama doesn't hurt you, then I can totally see this Anime getting an 8 or 9, which probably explains why it seems there's a gap of 3/4s vs 8/9s on the show.
