It is one of those series like "Lost":
- they keep the mistery alive till the last episode, then the last episode doesn't explain shit.
- some weird convoluted "mistery" as an excuse to mash thousands of genres together and call it "all part of the mistery". is it fantasy? future? past? crime? thriller? why not everything at the same time, while failing at them all?

Spend a whole series watching this and then realize nothing actually happened. the plot didn't move at all. still same characters, still same goals, nothing changed and nothing progressed.
I even watched the first episode of the second season because FINALLY it felt ... like something was going to happen...But no. Second season starts the same way: avoiding the plot and introducing new characters to avoid progressing the story.

I honestly think not even the author knows where this story is heading to. It's like he's writng without a clear goal and without having an idea of what he wants to write about.

Watch this if you like Gooning without a happy ending.

First episode is good, the rest became a long drag of nothing ever happening and nothing leading anywhere.

On top of that, the storytelling is so weird, every episode it feels like parts of the story were just glossed over, add to that weird attempts at "start telling at the end" which often left me feeling like I missed an episode. The constand back-and-forth just felt weird and, at the end, unfulfulling.
The whole point of the anime was that there is no point, which left me askin "why did I watch this?"
- the story leads nowhere
- the misteries lead nowhere
- the romance leades nowhere
- the fights ... are boring and repetitive
- each and every character lacks depth, and changes their personalities or objectives on a whim.

Many good reviews about this, so maybe its a personal thing. But I didn't enjoy this. I would give this a 5/10 if the story was a bit better and if the ending had at least something to do with the rest of the story,

Short and to the point: if you like Fantasy, Magic, Elves or anything D&D, then watch this.

The love and attention to detail put into every aspect of this is heartwarming, it stands as a true statement to what great anime can be, and what other creators should strive for.

Frieren is probably the best fantasy anime ever made. Every aspect of this is incredible:
- storytelling: slow paced story, and at the same time some of the best action scenes I've ever seen.
- world building: increadible world, attention to detail in politics, relationships, personalities, even the naming of the cities, characters etc is consistent (german).
- characters: have ... depth and feelings, but are never boring or angsty. So easy to root for each and every characetr
- animation: this is what anime animation should strive for. it is THAT good.

So: stop reading reviews, and just watch it. There's no way you'll regret it.

If you love music or, even better, if you are a musician, you might love this as much as I.

This might be the anime that ftakes the place of Beck (https://myanimelist.net/anime/57/Beck) as the best music anime ever!

The story has been great so far, the characters are amazing, I love the animation style, it even touches on themes like alcohol without losing its grace, and there is so much more talk about, however:

what really sets this apart is the music!

Anime has often been a bit cringe when trying to cover rock, and it is rare to see an anime that is able to be original and ... at the same time sound so freaking cool! The music is definitely better than other animes, like Beck or Nana!

Really great job, the quality of the music is what gives this weight and I am glad they went the extra mile to get this quality!

Check it out, you wont be disappointed.

It is like that movie "Pretty Woman" (where the prostitute falls in love with the client), but in this version:
even after being paid the women still can't stand the guy, and he thinks "you know what will probably help? if I pay EVEN MORE".

I just cant get over the way this anime tries to pretend that paying someone to be with you can be compared to a real relationship. And at many points in the anime it tries to convince that the paid relationships happening are somehow "better" than actual real relationships the main character is experiencing.

There are many cringe things about this anime, but ... the biggest "no" for me is definitely the way it keeps trying to sell this escort-service-relationship as more than it is.

Intro (no real spoilers, just my first impression):
there's a dog, and his personality is he enjoys to fart in people's faces. If you think this is funny, maybe this anime is for you.

The dog can fight, and if that wasn't enough, he doesn't fight himself but summons some magic dog to fight for him, and if that wasn't enough, this magic dog looks like a some weird mechanical dog.., oh and it is made of sand... or whatever...?

I would like to say the author put no effort into this, but it feels like the opposite:
like a lot of effort was put into making this as ... bad as possible, and beyond.

There is loads of other bad stuff: art, costumes, characters, the cringe of every conversation or introduction, the bad animation... but what really makes this stand out is the nonsense plot.

My definitions for "bad" have been updated.

I had given this a score of 3 from the first episodes, but it does get a bit better after the first 12 episodes, so I am settling my review to a 5.

Let me start by saying that a 5 does not mean it is complete trash, it just means it is an ok anime that we will all forget about in a few years. Can you watch it and enjoy it? Yes, sure, you can. But does it deserve the 8-10 scores some are giving here, trying to equal it to some of the greatest works of animation ever done? No, of course not.

It ... is an ok anime. Another over-the-top "reincarnation into a weird creature" anime like "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime", but it lacks the heart of that other show. Mainly because the main protagonist doesn't really have any friends and that makes the show just be a long grind of enemies.

The plot is all over the place. It seems it can't decide if it wants to be a fantasy or a videogame anime, if it wants "gods" or "administrators"... then even Mecha's make an appearance... seems the show doesn't really know what it is.

The story is ok, but the first 15 episodes don't expose the story well. After that it gets a bit better once pieces start falling into place. But by then it took so long for the hero to start meeting some people that most of the audience will be lost by then.

Music, animation, fight-scenes... all average, not really worth commenting on. Yes it uses some CGI, but I don't like to use that as an excuse. There are plenty of shows that use CGI where combat feels impactful, but this one doesn't. It feels like the director said "that slime was a success, so try to make something similar" and the studio rushed this one out.

That's about all i can say.

It is artsy and over the top, but in a good way.

The episodes are short, but the director manages to make us fall in love with the characters instantly. Everything is well thought the characters act in refreshingly real ways, never acting forced or over the top. It all feels close to heart, intimate and bittersweet.

Without spoilers, I'll just say that the anime's theme is people's inner wishes or inner true self, and about how hard it is to be true to our nature in a world where everything is judged, everything is online and we put such high expectations on ourselves.

This message reaches ... not only the viewer, but also seems to defend the anime itself, which is so different from anything I have ever seen before. It screams "This is me, deal with it" and ask us, the viewers, to also step out of our comfort zone and give the anime's different art-style a chance. The result is a perfect harmony between the story, the characters, the anime, the style and even the viewer, urging us to break-out and long for a version of ourselves that is free and, ultimately, happy.

The art is GORGEOUS, making up for the 3d-animation by presenting us with a beautiful journey full of spectacle and colors at every frame. And the soundtrack manages to match not only the anime as a whole, but also the feelings of its characters as they change through the story. Oh, and the costumes are amazing! I love the clothes, the colors, the way characters adapt their looks to each story. It is worth watching for that alone, and so much more.

If you like colors, music, art & feelings, then this is for you! It is a true masterpiece that ends upmaking us feel nostalgic, not only for more episodes, but for a long-lost version of ourselves.

Ikeda-San, you've got a new fan!

Each episode has a different message, usually set in some darker tone, but sensitive enough to make us care every time one of the protagonists need is in need of help.
I also really like the uplifting tone it has. Remember that feeling that Myazaki movies sometimes give us? That feeling of "hope in humanity: restored"? This anime has a bit of that, while at the same time being a very different style. I also like the way that it touches some serious issues, but in a way that might empathise enough with people who are in those situation..

It is really nice to see a ... lead-hero that actually has a backbone and doesn't always say the worst thing possible in every situation. You know that overused Anime hero that always does something stupid that messes everything up? I am so tiered of those main chars that "have no social skills" and [ 18if ] really bring a fresh wind to the scene with something different. Without going into spoilers, there are parts in which the hero doesn't act like a righteous person would, and I enjoyed that for 2 reasons:

First, because it is rare to see a hero simply do what he wants to. A hero that isn't such a nerd about rules all the time. A main character that doesn't only say what he thinks but who also says the right things, without messing everything up.
In most anime, the Main Hero acts so righteous all the time, that if it was a D&D you would describe his personality as "Lawful Good" (http://easydamus.com/lawfulgood.html). In this anime, however, the character is more "Chaotic Good" (http://easydamus.com/chaoticgood.html). It felt like this hero had more character than many from other series so far.

And the second reason I liked this, is that it really feels like the hero is not being who the audience or story was expecting/wanting him to be, but rather being the person that others need in the situation they currently are. This shows a very strong empathy for others involved, being more preoccupied in their wellbeing, in bringing them back to a place of believing in others again, instead of worrying about his own pride, ego, or whatever.

With these characteristics, the hero stands in a very strong contrast to the typical hero that is normally used in most anime. And personally, I enjoyed that immensely. So if you are also sometimes a bit sick of the old:

then hop on, you're gonna like this one.

The animation has a very unique style, which I liked, but it is many times lacking in quality. The style is nice and different, especially since there are different animators involved in each episode, but many scenes look like they could have. It looks like more of a budget thing than the animator's decision, so I am hoping this anime get's recognised for it's story and not for it's looks, which should have received more love.

Look like gladiators, talk like high-school kids.

The author had a chance to go over the horrible reality of slavery and gladiator fights.
Instead, this anime feels like a high school musical "dressed" in gladiator clothes.

Not only is this anime almost criminal in the 'washed down' way it portrays slavery, it is also disappointing in the way it fails to deliver any interesting fights. The world building is so bad and unfaithful to the realities of the time, doesn't sell the fantasy at all.

The author should have done some research and have some real interest in the material.

The uninteresting animation/fights also don't help.
