It really hurts me to give this anime a 4. The studio did such a great job making it visually appealing - if you ignore the CGI for the isekai action scenes. if it were just the art, I'd give this a 9/10.
But it's not just the art, is it. From the first 3 episodes alone it was very clear that this is a straight up unadulterated wish fulfilment power fantasy. Which in and of itself isn't unwatchable. It can be the kind of fun bad entertainment you have a laugh at; the dumpster fire one takes pleasure in.
This show... is only half of
...
that. The other half is littered with all the annoying bits that you see everywhere in anime and manga, but cranked up to no end. The hush hush who's that pretty guy stuff going on is over the top and rather unrealistic and annoying.
Same goes for all the damsel in distress moments that are all to contrived. The show seems to follow this pattern of "new skill -> use it to save the girls -> new skill -> save some more girls" and oftentimes it features the main girl Kaori.
Kaori is in a way the distilled essence of what's wrong with every harem style anime's main heroine. She's literally the most bland and boring of the bunch and we're TOLD about her good qualities but rarely shown and there just is... no really interesting interpersonal interaction with her going on. Not like any of the other girls have any better qualities than filling an archetype + having a crush on the MC, but at least they have some personality which is more than one can really say about our main heroine. On top of that, she's not exactly sensible and in some instances it seems like she goes out of her way to put herself in danger or make herself the issue where there previously wasn't one. Would give her a 0/10 if I could.
Now Yuuya himself as the MC. Classic Harem protagonist goody two shoes no balls guy. I mean, I get it at the start where he's still used to being the guy that's bullied etc. But there's really no show of growth. The only development he gets is a sense of guilt about having isekai powers now? My mans could use a little confidence, but nope. He just has the passive attraction abilities but is as awkward and non-committal/oblivious as just about every other harem MC. And in terms of creativity of his use of his powers, he's rather boring too.
Even the Smartphone isekai protagonist used his bs powers in more interesting ways. In some instances it seemed like the show tried to emulate the serious moments and wow moments of Mushoku Tensei but without establishing the context of where the seriousness is warranted. It's doing this teeter dance between serious and comedy without committing to either. In terms of bs over the top comedy, none do it better than Eminence in Shadows. At least that show isn't afraid to embrace the power fantasy.
But hey, if you enjoy unearned wish fulfilment power fantasies where suddenly the self insert goes from fat to hot and gets his dick sucked from every establishment in the world, then this is the show for you. After all, not only is it that, but it's probably the best looking of its sort around right now.
