This thing, this work of art, this 21st century masterpiece is definitely an artistic and masterful masterpiece. It's only 1 minute long so if you decide to embark on the journey that is Shitcom and try to understand the deep message it tries to convey as a "Story about love" then you'll just lose a minute of your time.
Story - 10
This short's story is a story about love. It may seem simple at first, but once you watch it enough times you'll get the message that it's trying to convey. For those who want that extremely deep message spoiled; I'll provide. At first
...
the protagonist in this short eats and starts feeling bad, then she starts dispensing shit out of her mouth, this is a metaphor for "talking shit", and her main love interest doesn't seem to notice. While she keeps "talking shit", he proposes and she can't stop. Soon afterwards her main love interest also starts dispensing shit out of his mouth and this means two things:
First - He realized that she was "talking shit" and so he started "talking shit", because he also realized that he talked a lot of shit and he could only accept his partner in such matter while showing that she had nothing to worry about.
Second - The shit that is dropping out of his mouth onto the table symbolizes the fact that he is putting down some "heavy shit" on the table by proposing.
The deep message Shitcom has is is simply breathtaking. Especially how it was simply conveyed in a minute. It is a social commentary on how a lot of society might talk shit and not accept people who talk shit. Truly a deeper message than any of the messages to be found in the works of Thomas Pynchon, James Joyce, and Albert Camus
Art - 10
The art is simple clay. The animation itself is really good for claymation and the simple approach it has is clearly showing how the genius, Takena Nagao, was influenced by postmodernism and minimalism to create his magnum opus.
Sound - 10
Nothing much to say here besides the facts that the sound effects are phenomenal and that the music is probably on the same level, or higher, than Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians".
Character - 10
The characters in Shitcom really develop along the way. At first the protagonist's love interest doesn't seem to notice her problem, but he then soon sees the light and comes to accept it while showing her that it is alright. As for the protagonist, she develops from thinking that her "talking shit" is a problem to realizing that it's really okay to "talk shit".
Enjoyment - 10
It's really enjoyable and has ton of rewatch value.
Overall - 10
Shitcom is an anime that I can confidently call a masterpiece. It does everything right and nothing wrong, and it's just simply outstanding how it accomplished all it accomplished in one single minute.
