Fish-out-of-water protagonist learns about a world of user-specific spiritual hijinks, with the typical spread of blood-tie motivations and power-grabs. The pitch isn't that revolutionary.

That said, the introductions are digestible, not overly-explanatory, and very early in there's a good mix of subversions, humor and stakes/danger. It's fun learning details about the world history to tie together cultures, locations and histories. Assuming the mangaka stays on the ball like she has with previous work (which I trust her to), I could see this growing into a much more discussed and anticipated work globally.

Extremely impressive cinematography, the animators use 3D to their benefit (as opposed to cutting corners) and at times will really flex their skills. The art direction is likewise astounding, some scenes would not feel out of place in a ghibli film.

The characters at first can feel one dimensional but over time it becomes evident that there's longlasting development unfolding. Though for me the pacing of that development was sort of unwarranted, resulting in a sort of narrative whiplash at times. The world isn't really expanded upon outside a few instances, and the times it does are only really on accident while trying to build ...

A compelling thriller series with a fairly mature approach to the "revisiting your childhood" idea. Treads a lot of heavy topics, and engages you impressively well. Superb pacing, knows when to change focus between story plots (and intertwines them all well). Several moments during reading I felt a genuine "OH SHIT", specifically due to clever authorship (using manga layout tricks I couldn't really describe without spoiling things).

Highly preferable to the Anime (or at the very least, a high preferable ending). I recommend you read before you watch, or at the very least read volume 4 (the manga finale) after finishing the anime, to see ...
