Almost ten years on, this remains not only the worst anime I've ever seen, but quite possibly the worst entertainment product I've ever consumed.
The soundtrack is one of the few highlights; otherwise, it's a disjointed mess. Fanservice moments are shoehorned in out of nowhere, seemingly just for the sake of it. The animation quality is inconsistent, with the OP in particular looking about ten or twenty years out of date (though it's at least not the worst-looking anime I've ever seen; that's probably Gunslinger Stratos). Mamoru Miyano is wasted in the role of protagonist Takeshi (I'll elaborate on this a little later).
But what elevates this
...
show to a disasterpiece is the writing. It's genuinely comparable to The Room, in the sense that the writers seem to understand that plot twists and unexpected events can make a show more interesting, but they don't seem to understand how plot twists are supposed to work. The result is a show that immediately forgets about almost every single plot twist it raises. To give you an idea of how bad this gets, one of the main characters literally watches his sister get kidnapped right in front of him, and she is never brought up again after that scene. No attempt tor rescue her. No angst over her wellbeing. It's like she never existed.
All of this leads into a final episode where the first third consists of Gekkou monologuing while Takeshi just stands there and repeats his name over and over, the second third consists of an underwhelming "all-out battle" sequence during which Takeshi just stands there and yells people's names, and the final third is dedicated to THE most incomprehensible plot twist of the entire series, again while Takeshi does nothing but recite the names of everyone he comes across. And then it just... stops. I don't want to say it ends, because that would imply that there is some sense of finality, some sense of closure. There isn't. It drops that twist on you with no explanation, and then it just stops.
I have no idea how this is in the top 1000 most-viewed shows on MAL. If you didn't watch this in 2014, the only reason you have to see it now is to witness just how bad of a trainwreck the writing for this show is.
