This anime (for those who knew nothing of the manga) blew up in the West from nowhere, although everyone hated it during the first 2-3 epidodes, (S1 started with a below 7 rating in MAL and ended with an 8.25) is because Kyotaro and Anna are just...normal. They are normal teens, with their normal insecurities, discovering love and life, for the first time. Kyo is the shadow/darkness (in his mind he is the outcast, the villain) and Anna is the light (the airhead, the goofball, the one who everyone likes). Many, many cheers to the mangaka for making a VERY simple story relatable and compelling,
...
even your usual, boring anime cliches (which many of us usually skip) like the sports event and the trip to Kyoto are some of the best episodes/chapters of the whole series. AND lets not forget the director. The use of light when Anna (the light of the story) is happy with Kyo (the embodiment of shadow which is cast away buy Anna's happiness), is simply brilliant. Perfect example of this is S1E7 when Kyo says "all I see during the class is you", that scene is incredible. Boku no Kokoro is a masterpiece for many, many reasons, art, soundtrack and the INCREDIBLE voice acting included. The Japanese voice acting that is, I checked the dub and in my opinion is very, VERY bad, especially Kyo's voice is a HUGE let down. See you all in a couple of years in S3!
