Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a piece of art, and what in my eyes would be considered “the perfect shounen” and “peak fiction”. Almost every element of this show is flawless, nothing is average or even above average. Everything in this show, from its pacing, to the OST’s, and to the underlying messages. Nearly every single thing executed in this show can be called simply amazing.
Edward Elric, the main protagonist in this story is simply put, a phenomenal character. When Ed’s mother died, the hatred for his father already started brewing. He despised his dad since the very moment he left his mother to die. Ed loves his brother more than anything else in the world and basically carries Al’s burden for him. His main goal is finding the philosopher's stone and that’s what he would like to do more than anything else in the world, just to give his brother his real body back. Edward began as an immature character, which developed him into a more understanding person as time went on and got a lot of reality checks on the way. At first, Edward made the mistake of thinking alchemy could solve everything, but as time passed that idea faded away and started crumbling, the idea got confirmed once he met Shou Tucker and saw Nina merged with their dog. Ed believed that alchemy could no longer cause good and could only be used as a tool and nothing more.
Alphonse Elric, the little brother of Edward, the person that lost his complete body and got his soul affixed to this piece of armor. Alphonse is a character who fought hard alongside his brother. But the hardest battle he fought was against himself and his mind. Would he ever become normal again? Are his thoughts actually real? Are his memories fake? All of these thoughts are questions he constantly had on his mind wondering if he could ever revert to his old self. Be able to feel, eat and sleep again.
Hohenheim, Edward and Alphonse’s dad. The person Edward despises most in this world. The person who is portrayed as the bad guy, who has no feelings, emotions or soul. He got portrayed like that because he gave Edward and Alphonse the idea that he left their mother to die. He didn’t show any emotion and got portrayed as a cold character who was the bad guy. But the more screen time he gets, the more detail we get to see of what Hohenheim actually feels and thinks. The more interesting he becomes. It becomes clear Hohenheim didn’t leave the family for fun. But had a clear goal in mind of what he wanted to do. He met the first homunculus and made the mistake to create something which he would later regret. He created the being named “Father”. His goal was to stop the plans of father and all the other homunculi and keep his family out of it.
Wrath AKA King Bradley was introduced early on in the series as the ruler, and king of the country. Little does everyone know he has a whole different personality to him. Instead of being the nice king who can be serious at times, Wrath is a person who is filled with hatred towards every living thing. Wrath was used in a test program to create a Füher to rule the country. He got forced to try and let the philosophers stone to take over his body. The people before him died and he was the only one to survive. This was when wrath was created. The way he was built up being an impostor while no one knew besides Edward and Alphonse. Being sneaky, supporting the other homunculi. Wrath was an amazingly built character with phenomenal powers, amazing dialog and a great character design.
Envy, an outstanding antagonist with amazing character development. Envy was truly a masterfully created villain. The fourth and middle homunculus created by father, created only to make humans suffer, Envy resents and hates humans more than any other homunculus. Revealing himself as the person who started the Ishvalan war, ruining thousands of souls with only one single move. His only intention was to make them suffer. Secretly Envy is jealous of humans’ inner strength and later came to admit that he was jealous of humans, while he was getting burned by Roy Mustang, in pain and agony he realized that all along he was jealous of humans.
Greed, a simple but astonishing character. Greed wanted all life had to offer, but never actually could figure out what he wanted. He got introduced as a simplistic character who wanted everything. But due to his first death and his rebirth, Greed changed into a well written character with a lot of development and personality. Taking over the body of Ling Yao, the prince of the eastern nation of Xing. With Ling being fine with it, he allowed Greed to take over his body, and greed thought he had finally found a new vessel to live in. But Ling didn’t completely let Greed take over his body and let him borrow it. Greed started to learn more about humans, and at times Ling took back his own body and tried searching for Ed and Al again. When they finally met, Greed was in control of Lings body. After talking a bit, Ed asked Greed if he wanted to become friends. Greed accepted and finally had his first couple of friends. He learned more about humans and helped them fight Father to stop his plans.
Pride, the son of King Bradley, or better known as Selim Bradley. Selim gets introduced as a simple kid as the son of the Führer who knows nothing of what his dad actually is. He shows that he is proud of his dad and shows admiration towards his father. He goes to school, gets treated as a normal kid. All, to hide the fact that Selim is secretly a homunculus. Until one time Riza sees something reeking in the shadows. It is Selim Bradley, or Pride. He gets shown as a scary character who hides in the shadows haunting people, chasing them everywhere they go, and they can't escape from him. Prude is the first homunculus created by Father and is called the big brother. Pride has the ability to manipulate shadows, no matter what the size is, he can manipulate them to do whatever he wants. Pride is one of the strongest and scariest homunculi.
Father, the homunculus given a body because of Hohenheim. And the start of all the problems, the ishvalan war, the deaths happening around the cities. The wars going on. The creator of all of the other homunculi. They all worship him as if he is a type of god in a human form. Fathers’ original form was known as the Dwarf in the Flask. Carried around by Hohenheim. He was more human-like in the vessel than that he was in his later form. Father is for the most part a dark and menacing character. But during his first meeting with Ling he showed a lighter, happier and more human side to him. Father is selfish, narcissistic, egotistical, cruel, and thinks that everything around him is merely a tool used for his plan. Father thinks Truth is a personal god. Father thinks that he is the perfect being, so he thinks god is on his own side. Just before Father died he admitted that his only plan was to set himself free from the laws of the universe and even god himself.
Scar, the first person to be pictured as the bad guy. Burned with rage by the people who destroyed his homeland, Ishval. Believing the state alchemists killed his family, his friends and his homeland. Scar goes around killing a lot of state alchemists. And even setting his eyes on Ed, who had nothing to do with the Ishvalan war. Eventually when meeting Envy, Scar suddenly realized it wasn't the state alchemists who destroyed his homeland. But all along, it was a homunculus. Realizing he was wrong, after meeting Winry whose q parents got killed while helping the Ishvalan people. Scar realized his mistakes, and decided to team up with Ed and Al to stop father. His character development is significant and he goes from a brutal murder machine, to someone who can see what he did wrong in his past.
All of Fullmetal alchemist brotherhoods’ openings are simply outstanding. Again sung by YUI is a phenomenal opening, amazing story telling, amazing song, amazing visuals and all by all a fantastic opening. It starts out by showing the complete backstory of Ed and Al from Hohenheim's perspective in only just 10 seconds. After that it transitions to a heart bursting in flames which consumes the home of the Elric brothers as they are standing in front of it. In only a few shots you get to take a peek into Al’s head thinking if he will become human again. It has a shot of Maes Hughes and Roy Mustang covering each others’ backs but once Mustang turns around he looks horrified, indicating Hughes’ death. Its got great compositions, and even amazing action scenes. This opening truly is one of the best openings of all time.
Opening 2 “Hologram” sung by Nico touches the walls is a good opening with some solid shots. But it misses some consistency, jumping from one color pallet to another, switching scenes out of nowhere. But that doesn’t mean this opening is all round bad. It has some great individual shots of a lot of antagonists and homunculi, including Scar, Gluttony and Lust, Envy, Wrath showing off he is a homunculus for the first time, and Father, showing only his body to add a mysterious factor to the opening.
Opening 3 Golden Time Lover by Sukima Switch is a great groovy song, with a lot of really good foreshadowing, transitions and visuals. Showing off Kimblee for the first time, showing him in flames, hinting that he has done something terrible. After that he gets shown with a philosopher's stone on his tongue, indicating that that was his goal all along. Getting the philosophers stone and gaining an immense amount of power. It shows Olivier Armstrong located in Amestris, at Fort Briggs. Showing she has an army and isn’t scared to fight back. It shows Edward seeing Alphonse’s body for the first time since it disappeared, and you see Ed getting pulled away by shadows into Envy’s mouth. Reaching out his hand, going back to him laying on a grass field realising he can’t do anything about it.
Opening 4 Period by Chemistry is an amazing opening with a great hook, top tier shots and great meanings. The opening panels to a shot of Ed and Al standing back to back with long shadows going in the opposite direction, meaning that their individual actions have inspired a lot of people and having a great amount of influence. And in the middle of Ed and AL there is the eye of truth. A shot zooms out and Besides Ed and Al more and more people start showing, these people are the people Ed and Al inspired with their actions.
Opening 5 Rain by SID is one of the most detailed and it’s just a beautiful opening. . Its got an endless amount of rain falling out of the sky. It doesn’t focus on certain characters, but it focuses on all of Amestris at the same time. The citizens to the Ishvalan people, and the military trying to fight back against the plans of Father and the other homunculi. Even though the rain is supposed to wash it away, all of the characters are still covered in dirt and blood. And the city is covered in flames. In the later parts of the opening it starts to brighten up, the sun breaks through the clouds and Ed sees his mother walking towards him. And then it switches to Edward laying in bed indicating that everything is totally fine and it was all just a bad dream.
All of the homunculi died in irony, Envy admitting he was jealous, greed died satisfied, Gluttony got eaten, Lust died being burned, Sloth died over exerting his philosophers stone, Wrath died happy and Pride got defeated by someone he thought was inferior to him. The show had some amazing animation, from smoothness to landscapes to character designs. From the beautiful art direction, to the breathtaking music to a beautiful story. All of these elements make Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood one of the best shows ever made.
