Some random thoughts about the show now that's finally over.
We've seen in countless media, where the story grows to much than it should. At a certain point you start to become unfazed by how it unfolds. Of the many questionable decisions the autor did, the introduction of the Paths was the one to ruin its development. It opened the Pandora's box of conveniences. Coupled with anime tropes, it died at the beach without achieving greatness. There's so much tension building, twists and last second saves that you start to realize the stakes aren't there and the story just rumbles forward in a fixed path.
The driving
...
force was the sense of mistery and dread of the beginning. This alien world was how it entered in the annals of anime. As the major revelations appear so does the brakes of the train start to fail. There just isn't going back when the glue of the overarching story, Ymir, serves as a senseless base.
I'm sure the moral justifications of Eren will continue to be discussed as others before still are (v. Death Note). There's nothing particularly relevant to its character growth. Other characters like Zeke, Reiner and especially Armin feel much more fleshed out, more human.
WIT Studio set the bar so high that MAPPA just couldn't achieve it. Despite both having to work with the story they were given, MAPPA didn't have the competence, in every aspect. Compounded by the fact that it picked the second part, after timeskip, it does help to feel a deep declined, considering the successful 3rd season.
Despite this there's some moments of brilliance. To give merit to the author, you can't achieve such heights of popularity with only luck. Perhaps I'm being very demanding, riding the expectations of the first part of the story. Or perhaps it should have ended when the gang reaches the sea and Eren looks at you and finally smiles.
