School Days, a rare anime where getting the ending spoiled for you is actually a good thing. I finished watching this anime today, in marathon, after I have read a lot of things about it, especially the "Nice ship!" phrase.
It starts out as your usual love triangle school drama, switches into harem anime during the mid-point, and switches back into love triangle near the end, but don't let that description fools you. While this kind of plot is usual in soap opera, the protagonist Itou Makoto is in no way your usual male lead. I mean it unusual in a bad way. I have seen
...
a number of protagonists for harem anime, usually they are indecisive, oblivious and a loser in treating their relationship; but none of them as bad as Makoto.
This guy Makoto screws with every female characters in this anime, except some tall blue haired girl and the underage girls. This guy is more horny than a rabbit. He's also a liar, denying all his unfaithfulness in front of people. He's a jerk, hurting everybody's feeling, tramples on everybody's hearts, and tosses the girls he's no longer need aside. He's also an irresponsible person. All of his behaviors make you want to punch him in the face. No wonder he ranks first as the male character you want to kill in several voting occasions.
Wait. Doesn't this make this anime a 3/10 trash? How come it's 7/10?
Well, this is where my description in the first sentence comes in. Throughout the viewing experience, you can't help but wonder:
"Divine punishment will drop unto this guy, right?"
"There's no way he can get away with these, right?"
"This guy should better off dead."
Congrats. Those wishes are granted. Without this spoiler, watching this anime will be really painful. But by knowing the ending before, my viewing experience is quite enjoyable. Seeing all the bad things he has done, I kept telling myself, "He will pay for this! He will pay this!" Don't drop it. Stick to the end. And you will find yourself jumping with joy with a clenched fist, and shouted with joy "God exists after all!"
Now, unto the uncovered part. The art is a mixed bag, if I may say. The girl characters are quite cute, but the guys are ugly, especially the main character, he's just a walking egg. Come to think of it, his eyes shaped like eggs too. The animation is lacking, but it doesn't matter much since this is not an action anime. Most of the time is filled with talking anyway. The sound effects are barely existent, and the songs are forgettable.
Overall, I recommend this anime. Don't call yourself an anime viewer if you know nothing about this anime. Lol. I don't regret watching it myself. It gives off important message too, "Don't ever make the same mistake, kids. See ya!"
