I'm just leaving some thoughts focused on the adaptation from manga to anime, considering the 24 episodes as a whole. As a fan of the manga author Jun Mochizuki, I will probably write something about it in the future with more details on the evaluation of the story, but for now I love the manga with 10/10.
The show has an aura of magic and mystery, with details and elements that are revealed and developed step by step throughout the arcs. One needs to accept this to enjoy the story and notice that it is very well built and fresh, which puts it aside from other
...
generic vampire animes. The scenery and character design are beautiful. One thing I really like about this story are the characters. Each one is highly interesting and intriguing, with deep developments to them. The fact that it's difficult to discern who is the "hero" and who are the "villains" is a plus for me, I really like it, it gives a impression of reality. Also the fact that we do not know their intentions for now. Specifically for the anime, the music is amazing as expected from Yuki Kajiura, and although I have a problem with the fast-pacing, I think the direction of the sequences was very well done given the limited number of episodes.
The adaptation is better than I expected with 24 episodes for 56 chapters and a complex story. There are two disbalances though. The first is the pacing. Part one has 12 episodes for 4 volumes (which already felt a bit fast-paced), while part two has again 12 episodes but this time for 6 volumes and more complex arcs. For keeping the standard of part one, it would have to be 18 episodes (3 per volume). Next, story and actions scenes were sped-up while romance and comedy scenes were given more time and development, which makes them seem a greater element of the overall show than it is in the manga.
So basically the only problem I have with the adaptation is it's fast-paced and specially in part two leaves important details out. Maybe if I didn't know about the manga I wouldn't find this a problem, but it may also be I wouldn't have the information from the manga to fill in and this would be a problem instead. Another minor problem is that for me the visuals were a bit too bright. Overall I think it still pays off to watch it besides reading the manga, I'd give it an 8/10 for the whole 24 episodes.

This is an extremely beautiful piece of animation, accompanied by marvelous and relaxing music. It is a work of art worth watching even if only for the sceneries and soundtrack.
Here the focus is almost completely on the journey through the milky way, and the story is not presented in its entirety, although it's possible to follow some events. It is beautiful and relaxing, and we do not have here the deep plot conclusions or eerie atmosphere present in the previous movie adaptation. No character is shown, although we can hear Giovanni's and Campanella's voices in many moments in the narrative.
The animation focuses on showing the
...
beautiful scenery of the journey and mostly explaining where they and the train are at each moment, with more precise astronomical information, which is quite interesting. With this approach in mind we can truly enjoy it.
The only negative side I would point out is that the story is incomplete and many passages from the original book or previous movie adaptation were left out. Maybe this could be a bit longer, but again, the focus of this animation is not the story, but the journey and the scenery, so that is by no means a big issue.
With many direct references to the original book and its author, this really stands out as a tribute.

It's possible that this doesn't appeal so much to a broader audience, with the explicit scene and all (well, let's say semi-explicit), but as a gay male who identifies with the issues and conflicts of the main character Shun, I can only classify this as a very satisfying and self-indulgent 58 minutes.
The theme of homosexuality, Shun's family issues, his school experience, and loneliness, and also the relation between Shun and Mio are all portrayed in a very real and relatable way.
The art is utterly beautiful, not only the characters, but the colors, the scenery, the flowers, the sky, the ocean. It makes even someone who
...
hates summer like me want to live in that place! Oh, and let us not forget the cats. Really, it's perfection.
And now to counter the usual "negative side" that is attributed to the movie, I actually have no problem the pacing and actually like the non-linear story-telling. Really, you don't need to read the manga to understand it, I didn't (yet). Neither is it fanservice to manga readers. The story, together with all that there is to be understood, is there. Just pay attention and be attentive, it's perfectly possible.
Now I agree that the story is simple, and that maybe it would be possible to elongate some flashbacks or events and even make it as a series of, say, four OVAs instead of a movie. But possibility does not always mean necessity. The movie is good as it is and is able to fulfill its purpose. It's a simple, light, beautiful, relatable, and self-indulgent experience, and it is with this expectation in mind that I give it the score I did.

An extremely well hidden gem in a world of superficial entertainment that I was lucky to stumble upon.
The entire movie is incredibly atmospheric and dream-like, the scenery is beautiful, the same for the music. It has the quality that some movies have to resemble a work of art, like a painting that draws you into it and makes you spend some time just appreciating it. I don't mind low pacing in general, I actually like it, and here the low-pacing is an extra plus that increases appreciation time. I could just watch it again and again.
And it is not just empty beauty. The
...
story is touching, deep, and emotional, and just adds to the overall beauty of everything. It's actually much more serious than I was expecting, with some dark revelations and concepts, although there is enough hope in it. It's surely something that will be stuck in my soul for some time.
An interesting comment is that I found it to be actually more concrete than the general consensus. Sure, the sequences have a strong abstract and symbolic element, however, many events do have a concrete explanation or receive one after we learn more of what is happening.
From all of the above, it's inevitable to conclude that the movie has the following qualities: abstract elements, symbolism, dream-like feeling, depth, and slow-pacing. It's also imperative to say that the story-telling is highly unconventional and requires the appropriate attitude to be appreciated. For some, like me, this means immediate recommendation. For others, it can mean a sound no. What it doesn't mean, however, is that it is just psychedelic bullshit; maybe it's just not for you. If you feel like the elements above appeal to you, I'd say it's a must. Break the barrier of infinite superficial and popular content, reach to the forgotten realms of the underground, and enjoy this hidden but preserved masterpiece.
