Have you ever felt just a little furry?
Not full blown furry mind you, but you have a thing for Neko’s, Kitsune and other Kemonomimi.
Are you no longer satisfied with your standard cat, dog, bunny and fox girls but full blown monster girls are just a bit to much for you?
Have you been desperately searching for panda, koala, sloth and bat girls in your standard harem anime?
If you feel a connection to any of these statements.
Get out while you still can…...
Still there?
...
Then welcome to the Seton Academy!
Story – 7
Murenase! Seton Gakuen (Come Together! to the Seton Academy) Is a story about the mixed species school Seton Academy where all manner of Kemonomimi girls and full blown anthropomorphised animal guys study together. Yes, you heard correctly. The girls are Kemonomimi and the guys are animals that walk on two legs and wear clothes, with the obvious exception to this being humans. The main character Jin is a human with encyclopedic knowledge of animals which is constantly put to the test to solve the problems of his animal classmates despite his hatred of them. Along the way we find out more about his past, he collects more h̶a̶r̶e̶m̶ ̶m̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶s̶ friends…. And he tries to spend more time with the only other human in the school Hitomi while avoiding the eccentric little wolf Ranka. The initial story is honestly pretty awesome and makes you learn about animals in a surprisingly fun way. Case in point, while doing an animal quiz with my friends I crushed it. Convincing most of them I’m smart while in reality I’m just a degenerate, and before you ask, yes. This is a standard harem plot with panty shots galore so if that’s not your cup of tea you may wish to look elsewhere. As something of a degenerate myself I didn’t mind it and continued on learning interesting animal tidbits and enjoying the spectacle. However, the last few arcs kind of fell flat in my opinion as it felt like Bungo Yamashita was just throwing stuff at the wall and hoping something would stick. Therefore, despite how much I enjoyed the series initially, the score drops for the incoherent lead in to the rushed ending.
Art – 9
The art in Murenase! Seton Gakuen is great. The girls are extremely cute and their animal depictions are on point. Furthermore, the other half of the student body who are literally just animals are extremely well done and detailed. I can’t even fathom the amount of effort necessary as Yamashita could have been content with this but also made solid background and action scenes and even had all the teachers be dinosaurs for some reason, all of which was also well drawn. While there were occasional weird attempts at different animals that were a touch jarring the artwork is probably the best part of this series.
Characters – 8
Jin Mazama
Jin is a man with the knowledge of Steve Irwin and with zero of his love. Jin hates animals, to him they are pests to be avoided if possible and controlled when necessary. He has studied them not because he loves them but because he has to know his enemy. When you find out more about his past, his view although frustrating to watch is also understandable to an extent. However, that’s not all there is to our Jin-dere. His hate of animals regardless of species actually makes him really fair with those who would otherwise be ostracized for their particular quirks and the stigma they might receive from the other animals. This causes a harem of Kemonomimi to form around him while a more secretive group of male students watch longingly from the shadows. Furthermore, he’s not quite as hateful as he lets on as he’s occasionally gone out of his way to help others while also showing genuine concern for his friends. If I have one complaint about Jin it’s that his attitude towards Ranka is awful in the beginning. I mean come on, how can you hate such a cute character. Speaking of which.
Ranka Ookami
An adorable little pink haired wolf who wants to rule the world. However, she’ll have to start somewhere and that means leading her own pack in Seton Academy first. Ranka would definitely not be considered the most capable, intelligent or powerful leader but she makes up for that with...uh… well she is cute I guess? All joking aside, she’s really determined to cross the divide that animals make with each other to only stick with their own species and willing to do what it takes to help others. She’s honestly an admirable little wolf with a heart almost as big as she is. Although, she does have a habit of letting success go to her head inevitably leading to her downfall. Thankfully, she has the capable Jin to pull her out of trouble and the kind Hitomi to smooth things over.
Hitomi Hino
Hitomi Hino is the only other human at Seton Academy and the girl Jin is interested in. She’s kind and accepting of others and demonstrates all the qualities of a true female as Iena would put it. She’s the one who comes up with the initial idea of a cooking club for the group and helps calm down Jin when he gets angry. She plays the part of the buffer well and is also aware of Jin’s feeling towards her. Although, she seems to prefer to maintain the status quo rather then allow their group to fall apart to infighting.
There are a lot of other awesome characters in the harem as well including the ‘active’ sloth Miyubi. The ‘gourmet’ koala Yukari, The elusive cat Kurumi, the idol panda Meimei and the shy bat Chii. Add King the lion in ‘love’ with an impala, Iena the ‘manly’ spotted hyena, Ranka’s BIG sister Ferrill and the ‘nudist’ student council president Miki and you have a truly interesting and varied cast.
Enjoyment – 8
I honestly enjoyed this manga. It’s not often you get a harem manga that is actually kind of educational and the characters are all interesting and fun to watch. The hijinks they get into and the ways they solve their problems rapidly switch from realistic to absurd and back again and I would often be caught in between loving, hating and laughing hysterically about any particular arc in this manga. If you’ve read this far you should have a pretty good idea what to expect from the first 100 or so chapters. Although, the others might surprise you.
Overall – 8
While I have some complaints about some of the characters being 1-dimensional, a little too non-committal, rude or even straight up disappearing like the author totally forgot about them. Murenase! Seton Gakuen is honestly pretty good. If it had not been for the haphazard and rushed ending I would have rated it higher. With all that being said it’s a fairly unique, educational and interesting manga and if this review has made you curious then there’s only one thing left for you to do. Come to Seton Academy and Join the Pack!

Have you ever lain awake at night unable to sleep because a certain question now plagues your thoughts? A question so ludicrous that you know there could never be a definitive solution. So now you are left with no choice but to go another sleepless night without answers. Was the question “What if Light Yagami was a lazy, irresponsible, cosplaying fujoshi with the power to force people into relationships instead of killing them?” If this incredibly specific question has been keeping you up at night then you can now rest easy. Renai Boukun also known as Love Tyrant is here to bring
...
salvation to your weary soul.
Story – 8
I’m not going to lie, this story is absurd. Add every cliché you can about your typical harem, dial its character archetypes to 11, add supernatural powers and casual conversations with God and the devil and boom you have a …plot? Love Tyrant doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is good because the last thing you need to do is bog down the readers with something like that. It starts off slow but the story continuously improves, never drags on and ends EXTREMELY well. It’s so much better than your typical harem manga. It also has so much random nonsense whether it’s an obsessive demon penguin, a demonically created isekai, or an athletic competition between heaven and hell. It’s genuinely difficult to guess what’s coming up next yet somehow still makes sense in the context of the story.
*light spoilers ahead*
One day our protagonist Seiji Aino is told by a grim reaper wielding a kiss note that he has to kiss someone or he will die. He doesn’t believe her…at first, possibly because she’s kind of lying. Actually, she will be the one who dies he’ll just remain a virgin forever. So all he has to do is choose the guy he likes most and she’ll make them a couple for eternity. Why a guy? Because that’s Guri’s hobby as a cupid. Not doing it for you Seiji. Fine pick a girl than, your crush that has a violently possessive dark side? Why not? Also, Guri thought it would be fun to experience love for herself so she wrote all three of you into a relationship.
So begins a love triangle between a cupid, a yandere and a wishy washy protagonist.
Art – 7
The backgrounds are sometimes a little bland and there are a couple of wonky transitions when it goes into slapstick style, however overall the art is good. There are plenty of visual gags that you have to take a 2nd glace to confirm what you just saw and some really impressive artwork regarding some very inhuman characters. Of course none of that matters as long as the girls are cute, which they certainly are.
Characters – 9
Seiji Aino
Your typical, bland, normal, not very athletic or good looking, wishy washy, go with the flow, is somewhat kind so all the girls fall in love with him protagonist. Did I miss anything? You’ve seen this type a million times and as long as harem manga keep getting made protagonists will either be clones of Yuki Rito or Kirito. To be fair to Seiji we probably need a little grounding in this adventure and he plays the straight man well, giving voice to all of us screaming “what?!?!” Thankfully he does progress through the story albeit slowly.
Guri
Angel or demon, cupid or shikigami, or maybe just a cosplaying fujoshi with a little too much power. Guri is the one responsible for most of the stories hijinks either directly or as a result of someone trying to mess with her. She’s lazy, but motivated by the desire to understand love and to read BL. She can be surprising insightful into others even as she causes absolute mayhem. She’s fun to have around but that fun should come with a warning label.
Akane Hiyama
A nice, talented, smart, athletic and kind girl, Akane is someone everyone in the school admires. She also carries around dozens of knives to kill off potential rivals or Seiji himself, the damn cheater. She’s a yandere, an absolutely 110% yandere who is obsessed with Seiji and absolutely furious that Guri has essentially forced herself into their relationship. A girl like this would definitely be terrifying in real life but in a harem comedy she’s ….. yep still terrifying.
Yuzu Kichougasaki
How can you get more forbidden then a BL crazy cupid in Japan? Incest.
Yuzu is Akane’s half-sister and has a massive crush on her older sister Akane. Which makes it half-forbidden I guess? She’s kind of a tsundere and becomes fast friends with Guri who disposes of Akane’s admirers by putting them together. Of course that means getting into close contact with Guri so I’ll leave what happens to your imagination.
Shikimi Shiramine
Akane and Yuzu’s cousin Shikimi is a rather interesting character (I think there maybe something wrong with this family). She’s a sadistic torturer that loves stealing things that other people treasure, whether that’s jewellery or people. Maybe because she’s never really had something she can call her own? She's introduced as an antagonist and by the end of the manga ….. still is? Despite the fact she has quite literally stabbed Seiji in the back, seeing how she comes to understand herself and change was one of the most fascinating parts of this manga.
Enjoyment – 8
Coming off the anime which the author felt was a s*** adaptation (I didn’t notice much difference to be honest.) To find the 2nd half of the story through the manga, I don’t know what I was expecting. It’s a wild ride from start to finish and one I highly recommend to anyone bored with the usual harem manga that’s constantly being turned out.
Overall - 8
Where Love Tyrant really shines is the character development. They have a lot of the typical archetypes, just dialled up until the meter was broken. What’s really impressive though is how you can see how the entire main cast and even many of the secondary characters develop through the series. These are not your typical paper cut outs. They’re cut outs with heart and you genuinely feel happy to watch them grow. Also EVERYONE gets a happy ending. Not just the MC and the harem, also the many antagonists and even many of the side characters do and it really leaves you with a good feeling at the end.
Of course there’s a serious amount of absurd randomness that will leave you scratching your head at times so be warned. If you want an absolutely ridiculous and surprising good harem manga look no further than Love Tyrant.

Let's get one thing out of the way.
Do you enjoy a psychotic demonic loli beating a high school kid to a bloody mess of hamburger with the intention of burning fear into the hearts of his classmates?
Do you enjoy the image of a boy running for his life from a bunch of psychotic murders and cannibals that want his heart - literally?
Does your classic dandere become much more interesting when she is the equivalent of a walking natural disaster of accidental mayhem and death?
Are you not put off by graphic descriptions of mass murder, torture, cannibalism, rape and necrophilia?
If your answer to any
...
of these questions is no this may not be the book for you.
If you answered yes to all of these questions however, have I got a story for you.
Story - 9
The first novel sets up an interesting premise and it's the reason I was of course drawn to the novel. Our protagonist happens to be the type to get into fights because of his quick temper and hatred of bullies. Starting from the desire to defend his sister he eventually gets to the point where he will fight anyone, anywhere. You would probably expect him to die quickly with an attitude like this but he happens to have superhuman strength and endurance, making knocking out 12 guys armed with weapons in a warehouse no problem for our protagonist. It's only later after he arrives home that he finds out that the 12 that he had left snoring wouldn't be waking up, as they have all been murdered. He is convicted of their murders and earns himself the title of the 'Warehouse Butcher'. He would probably be stuck in a maximum security prison or executed for his crimes, but thankfully the ever progressive Japan has a new school that re-educates young murderers so that they can one day re-join society, Purgatorium Remedial Academy. This 'school' is where our hero is sent to learn how to behave alongside dozens of prolific killer classmates and teachers that are also professional assassins as well as their wardens. He becomes an instant celebrity having one of the highest supposed kill counts among the students who like to express their admiration and envy....enthusiastically. As amazing as this may sound the story does start a little slow and if you only read the first novel it would probably leave you with an "it was okay I guess". The homicidal harem that starts to form around the protagonist is a little cliché with a bit of crazy mixed in, and is probably not enough to keep you entertained at first. Thankfully, the rest of the series ramps up the fear and bloodshed with killer school festivities, homicidal family members and casual executions. By the time you finish volume 2, if you are anything like me, you will become hooked on the carnage and brutal drama.
Art - 10
Art can be a little difficult to judge in light novels as it is often quite sparse. Thankfully, several full color pages in the beginning and occasional black and white images in the chapters help us visualize the sexy, beautiful and sometimes blood spattered heroines as they work their way into our hearts...directly through someone else's chest. If you like images just for sexiness then it certainly delivers. However, don't blame me if you fall in love with the deranged expressions of these psychotic ladies as their eyes open a window into madness.
Characters - 10
Kyousuke Kamiya
The protagonist and 'hero' of our story is a little bland as most protagonists are, being the only 'normal' person in a school filled with murderers. He differentiates himself by having super strength and endurance, obtained genetically from his father who was once hit by a train and merely put in the hospital. He also has a bit of a sister complex (although not nearly as bad as her big brother complex). He is meant to be the viewpoint character and plays his role well as he desperately tries to convince the killers around him that he is one of them and survive the aptly named Purgatorium Remedial Academy.
Renko Hikawa
The 'main girl' she immediately falls in love with Kyousuke and tempts him with her beautiful face and clear innocent eyes; at least she would except she always wears a gas mask. The gas mask she wears hides more than just headphones constantly blaring death metal as she evades questions about why she is at the school and why she is so obsessed with Kyousuke. Despite Kyousuke's lack of interest in her non-visible face she likes to constantly tease him with her ridiculous rack and obsessive personality. She eventually 'reveals' herself to be a skilled death metal vocalist being the lead singer of a band and quite the yandere but I'd like to avoid spoiling too much more about her.
Eiri Akabane
Our tsundere who we all know "secretly" loves our thick headed hero; she has red hair, sleepy eyes, long beautiful legs and is a professional assassin with six kills under her belt. She happens to be from a family of assassins who we actually get to meet later on with the 4th volume focused on Eiri and them. Her tongue is as sharp as her blades as she mercilessly cuts into her irredeemable classmates and Kyousuke. Of course she does have a softer side, that dere has to mean something after-all.
Maina Igarashi
Cute, soft spoken, shy, and easily startled, Maina is your classic dandere who you just want to protect from the world. Now if only someone could protect the world from Maina Igarashi. Rightfully nicknamed Black Pandora, she is 'fatally clumsy'. When she starts to get nervous, people start to get dead. She ended up in the academy after her attempted love confession resulted in 3 deaths, and her cooking despite being perfectly normal and containing no poison is fatal to anyone without access to immediate medical attention.
There are of course several other important characters to mention such as
Hijiri Kurumiya
Kyousuke's home room teacher is a loli that carries several metal pipes which she uses to beat submission into anyone that misbehaves, fights or otherwise annoys her.
Saki Shamya
With a polite demeanour and the trust of the faculty she leads the public morals committee as the 'Murder Princess' with 21 kills to her name and a 'secret weapon’ that would make anyone flee in terror.
Ayaka Kamiya
Kyousuke's little sister who has a serious big brother complex and who becomes quite pertinent in the third volume.
There are also several great side characters like the giant Bob who wears a sack over her head, Chihiro Andou the adorable little cannibal, Kuuga Makyouin with a deadly case of chuunibyou, and several other classmates and upperclassmen that kill, torture, rape and/or eat their victims.
Enjoyment - 11
I absolutely loved this series and almost broke into tears when I found out there was only six volumes (not including the Omnibus). The characters are crazy, varied and thoroughly enjoyable, making every interaction exciting to read. You never know when someone might suddenly attempt to take a bite out of someone's arm or accidentally stab them to death with a fork and that helped keep the story interesting. The characters motivations are compelling, and make sense even as they gradually grow and change through the series. The vulgar language and casual violence was an absolute joy to read through. The humour may not be quite your taste but I loved every bit of it, and there were several times where I would burst out in maniacal laughter on the bus drawing the worried gazes of fellow passengers.
Overall - 10
Despite how brutal it sounds Psycho Love Comedy is actually quite light hearted and is essentially a love comedy with a bunch of crazy killers, hence the name. I have recommended it to several friends and lent out my own physical copies of the series. Most of them said exactly 2 things to me. "It was a little slow to start but it got really good by volume 3" and "Knowing you, this must perfectly suit your tastes". This is the most fun I've ever had reading a series and I've read literally thousands of books. This series is not for everyone and it's certainly no epic classic like the lord of the rings. However, if you have a crazy bone in your body or perhaps a body under your floorboards I suggest you give this series a shot.
