Both feature a protagonist that's not the main focus. The protagonist is there to shed light on themes related to society, philosophy, justice, ethics, etc. where auxilary, episodic characters exist to portray certain stereotypes or tropes. Both in Kino no Tabi and Ethics, the main character usually doesn't take a side, but rather raises questions and lets others, as well as the reader, to decide what to think about that.

These two manga are really similar: The plot's timeline spans over decades. There is a myriad of complex and multi-dimensional characters. Both series show realistic conflicts between powerful organizations with some supernatural elements. Both series capture attention and are very binge-friendly. Both series have a realistic art style and grasp of human psychology. Both manga also share a similar problem: the author decides to write more than one iteration of the hero's journey, introduce more characters, do a time-skip, and seems to have forgotten what was the charm of the first arcs. The finishing chapters leave the reader somewhat dissatisfied. Both are worth recommending to any mature manga readers.

Both of these manga are based on exactly the same premise: what would happen in the Japanese military went back in time? They vary in length and in character, but for anyone interested in historical manga, and alternate history in particular, both of those manga are worth recommending.

Both manga go into detail of military strategy and tactics and how it developed in the early days of our civilization. They both show just how much thinking went into every battle back in the days when technology was limited to the simplest tools and materials. Both manga feature realistic battles, where you won't find a loud charismatic main character leading his soldiers to victory by plot armour alone. Battles in both manga are full of struggle and uncertainty. Both manga serve as a good history lesson, the kind you would hardly find in a classrom.
