Both characters meet offline after meeting inside a game first and end up socializing and eventually getting a girlfriend/boyfriend and changing their lives for the better! Both animes sort of have characters with a 'hikokomori' lifestyle (a person spending most of their time locked up in home playing games and such)

Both animes focus on two characters that have one thing in common! They are actually opposites in personality but have 1 thing in common! Now this might sound very vague but both animes have very eccentric characters that are very self centered or have some sort of problem for example problems socializing or being too deceitful or simply going the wrong way about life'n'things and in the end end up learning more about themselves from the opposite person of themselves and potentially even fall in love with them!

Both animes have in common the fact that their ingame dear friend/associate ends up turning out to be a classmate and that eventually changes their lives for the better after meeting offline! Both animes also have in common game-wiz type character that is really good at games!

I can't believe anybody hasn't recommended this already!? Both animes are very atmospheric while being supported with the background music and narration is enhancing mood even more! Both animes have abstract fluent animations with beautiful and colorful effects to the point of almost looking supernatural at certain point just like Mushishi! some Chihayafuru's characters do have almost inhuman abilities at certain points the main difference between both animes is Mushishi is about adventure and seeking path in life alone with supernatural touch while Chihayafuru is more Game oriented seeking your path in life through playing Karuta with friends! If you liked the atmospheric feel and music in Mushishi you will probably like the bit more intense but still atmospheric anime Chihayafuru!

If you liked Kekkaishi add

...then you might like Kyoukai no Kanata add

Altho its much shorter anime Kyoukai no Kanata has the upper hand in superb animation style and much less eerie atmosphere than Kekkaishi it is also much more moe and comedy focused show but also has that contrast of dark events happening compared to Kekkaishi both MC's are badass in their own way and have somebody who they really care for or somebody who really cares for them! And both anime are about Otherworldly beings, Youkai and Supernatural abilities!
