As an art enthusiast myself, it'll be the hardest thing in the world not to fall in love with this piece. In just under an hour, they managed to encapsulate every drive and break that an artist could have, striving in their own world.
I doubt this will resonate with everyone, and i can see some people having issue with the shorter runtime, as i myself consider it a waste of potential that Fujimoto, the author, is so hesitant to drown any further in narcissism that he doesn't develop this spark of his farther to be a feature length. But for someone who can create something

Eiga Daisuki Pompo-san
(Anime)
add
Boasting brilliant practicalities and procedural of the industry, Pompo The Cinephile is an exercise of technical mastery that overwhelmed its own weight, suspension, and story.
It is impressive how beaming with passion this movie is to the craft. It's an anomaly that an anime movie is even allowed to be this practically effective. Shirobako and Bakuman came to mind when thinking about the show in the same vein, but even they are still confined to its medium and hard to break the meta. Pompo on the other hand, will explicitly morph its own narrative if that means they can show you in the most literal sense ... Sep 19, 2024
Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan

add
Try so hard to walk in the golden way of absurdist, that they've boringly started making sense.
I would pay tons of money just to have this anime's marketing team. Because what they've done is basically taking a student school project and then promoting it as a competent show. My Deer Friend Nokotan has to be the driest sense of humor in anime that I've seen. And yes! You might say that comedy is subjective, but you can't deny that even they are trying so hard to clap at their own jokes most of the time here. Everything is competently made, but the source material ... Aug 19, 2024
Suki demo Kirai na Amanojaku
(Anime)
add
There's a world that is being condensed into such a tiny portion, they prioritize the characters over it and that makes the balance of this story tip-off. There's a big heart inside, but the medium is just too small, the story goes into cardiac arrest so often.
And the main girl, i don't like to be mean, but she never breaks out of that token, FLCL, manic-pixie-girl kind of character that she is. The story could benefit so much more if she be less mature, less collected, and be more akin to her naive age group. She just so hard to relate. Aug 2, 2024
Spy x Family Movie: Code: White

"Of what entertainment value is there going around in circles? I don't understand children" -Loid Forger (himself!)
I'm probably the worst person to review something like Spy x Family, because I dislike the repetitive nature of the story, where it often goes in circles and ends up back at square one. This feels like a strategy only aimed at commercialization rather than genuine storytelling. It seems that the creators are deliberately limiting the depth of each character, making them shallow and preventing any meaningful decisions that could push the narrative out of its comfort zone. This is especially noticeable given that the last season aired simultaneously with ... Jul 31, 2024
Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!

Usually, not my forte to write a review for an ongoing seasonal anime, let alone a romance one, let alone just three episodes in! But i just can't help it, the vibes literally took my breath away! And the fact that I'm going out of my way just to write this so y'all won't be left behind, is enough of a guarantee!
This is the one anime that's having the most fun with its medium this season! Grabbed me by the throat and flung me back to my adolescent years of watching the same stupid but passionate, high-school romance copy-paste. But this is more than ... Jun 22, 2024
One Piece Film: Gold
(Anime)
add
Leave it to the movie production's team to consistently create a dollar-store One Piece's story
While the final confrontation and the backstory of Tesoro managed to reach that high canon standard, sadly, almost anything else in here is guaranteed you'll never caught Oda slacking and putting any into his main storyline. The Western influence of the mafias and heist movies is so apparent and so cheaply recreated, they didn't even try to masks all the twist and cliches they've borrowed. The spirit of the main crew is lost in this mixture, they're even betraying the character in one scene where there are kids being abused and Luffy ... Mar 27, 2024
Sousou no Frieren
(Anime)
add
A cozy watch for a long time audience of this medium, but slightly unaccessible for the beginners.
You can't deny, out of every tropes and cliches that Frieren has done right, you still need to be familiar enough with the formula to atleast walk in the same wavelength. This show built its own world above prior knowledges out of every Isekai or fantasy genres in anime. So forgive me, if i still can't shake the feeling that this is just a pretty good spinoff or an OVA from a preexisting IP. But on the other hand, arguably, that is the whole intention! Yes, this feels like a ... Jan 31, 2024
Blue Giant
(Anime)
add
This feels like the ultimate, personal attack for those "Did they animate the music right?" videos.
While clearly suffering from too much content cramped into a movie duration, Blue Giant never losses the driving force to propel you and them further! Even more, the presence of animation fills and perfecting the obvious gap left by the manga. You will never see passion, hustle and youthful transcending a medium this beautiful! The kind of music that makes you jump out of your seat out of reflexes! The kind of music that drives you crazy! Blue Giant is the epitome of musical animation, and you'll have to fight me ... Hayao Miyazaki saying goodbye to his viewers whom he considers as his grandchildrens, is a narcissism that I didn't expect to break my heart this badly.
The Boy and the Heron is the Miyazaki's that needs the most of context to begin with. The most personal, an Endgame for Studio Ghibli. An intimate message that those who weren't raised on his grand tales may not understand. But for those of us who found a friend in Totoro. For those of us who fantasize seeing Laputa when looking up at the sky. For those of us who can't wait to grow up like Kiki. For those of us ... |
