I don't understand what all the positive scores are about.

Maybe it's the translation I read, but the story felt like the most incoherent mess I've read in a long time. It's basically a crime snuff manga with a psychological subplot. The violence is stupidly excessive, the ending is too open-ended, any possible messages get muddled in the end -
Something about memories being fiction we tell ourselves?
Schizophrenia?
Delusions?
Grotesque portrayals and themes for the sake of diverting people away from the subject matter?
S&M themes about reaching your own satisfactions by hurting others?
Is the story itself about reaching meaning in life? - it's hard
...
to grasp whether it had any meaning or message at all.
The end reveal is unsatisfying and predictable a good chunk before it even happens.
Story is poor
Excessive gory shock value to the point it becomes boring.
Art is quite decent and can get pretty expressive.
Practically all the characters are unlikable degenerates with no real arc to them, they're mostly just 'there' - at the very least it's fun enough to see their perverse personalities clashing; but again, to what end?
The only enjoyment I got out of it, was to keep reading and see whether the story would lead anywhere worthwhile. Maybe I'm not a big enough galaxy brain to appreciate this manga, but frankly I wish I hadn't wasted several hours getting through all of the chapters.
