Colorful is exploring a very delicate theme, different sides of a person. It tells us that every person has the good and the bad side, the bright and the dark side. It’s one of a hell difficult themes to illustrate in a film. Sadly in my opinion, but Colorful fails to bring this intriguing theme to completion.
To my mind the theme’s problem begins with the characters, as Colorful completely fails to go in depth of the their problems in a proper way. The characterisations are ruined as the film tends to jump from character to character. Take the protagonist’s crush for example. At the very

beginning she got some screen time and development. We got to know ‘how’ and ‘what’ but then suddenly this film completely forgets of her existence. Another good example is the mother-son arc (the best part of this film without doubt), which has come very far but never got a logical ending. The following things have unfortunately happend to every character in the film (apart from the protagonist maybe).
In the ending Colorful tries to tie up loose ends of those characters arcs but it feels clumsy as they just never got completed in the first place.
As following, the film’s main theme doesn’t reach the audience as well. The problem still lies in the characters. As they never got a logical completion, didn’t the theme either. I mean, yes the theme is clear, but only because it was literally said many times. In addition it also should have been shown in a proper manner. Shown to us by expending the problems of the characters and it’s PROPER solutions and conclusions.
Apart from the already highlighted problems, all the other parts, like animation and sound, were good.
Besides, the film still drew my attention the whole time as it remained quite interesting. As I already said the mother-son arc was genuinely quite good, sadly it hasn’t had an accomplished ending.
In conclusion, Colorful has had a big potential. The lack of characterisation caused the theme’s telling to fail. Still, I don’t find this film bad, neither good. It just feels, unfinished. So it’s a 5/10 for me. Maybe if the film’s duration had been a half an hour longer, it would have had the time to tell us everything.
