I feel a seven is the fairest score to give this series. Certain episodes are definitely worth an 8, or even a 9, but overall the series wasn't amazing.
It's definitely hampered by its tight screen time. Each episode was done by a different studio, and trying to cram a full story into a single 13m episode wasn't a very smart idea. The best episodes like 4, 5, 7 and 8 all had longer run times that were able to properly tell their stories.
My recommendation would be to just skip the worst episodes. It's entirely episodic and only about half the episodes are any good.

to add that I really don't like the idea of Disney sticking its nose into anime... If they end up throwing money at all the good studios they'll be too busy making westernized (watered down) anime for a western audience instead of adapting manga properly. It was a really cool project that I hope gets a lot more people into anime, but I hope this doesn't become the next big thing.

One out of ten. The main character killed people with a Death Gods book and that's bad. I didn't like him doing that, and me not liking the morality of a character effects a shows quality. According to my literature degree twitter gave me.
What? Wrong anime? Sorry. That's definitely not related to certain other reviews. On another unrelated note, I'd like to say farewell to the strangely large amount of people who were introduced to anime through this series, made a MAL account just to give it a poor score and write a review, and then watched nothing else. I'm sure they were legit, if
...
they weren't the user would be smart enough to change their privacy settings.
Now to actually get to the review itself: It's a solid 8-9/10 isekai that's one of the granddaddies of the genre. Before they turned into the copypasted slop we get today. To sum it up: Imagine if the writer actually cared about his isekai story and put detail into the characters and world. And the studio that made this series was made FOR this series, and they did a great job with its adaptation. Looks and sounds stellar.
As for the controversy surrounding it, ignore it. Loud minority making multiple accounts to get attention as usual. Only people who whine about it haven't been watching anime very long. I gave it a ten and made this review just to give them the middle finger to be honest.

Don't buy into the hype for Tower Of God... At least not yet. Seven episodes into a twelve long series and there is nothing hooking me into the show right now. In fact, I probably would have dropped it if there was no hype surrounding it. This show will probably get good eventually, but so far, it just simply isn't.
This show excels at nothing but its art (not animation). It is really trying to play to the 'mystery' of the series but in doing so is hurting itself by not telling us enough to get us interested. Typically, mystery shows that follow a main characters
...
adventure (e.g. Attack on Titan and Made in Abyss) get the audience invested through its world. Attack on Titan draws us in with the question of why was the wall breached now after a hundred years and what is the story behind the colossal titan. Made in Abyss draws us in with the void of the abyss, with its weird monsters and artifacts and with the question of what is at the bottom. But in Tower of God, you are either never told enough to be interested, or told everything so as to not be interested. You are told if you climb the tower you get a wish but you are never told about civilizations living in or around it, you are never told if there is monsters in it, you are never told who made it or when it was made and you are never told if there even is a mystery to begin with. There are only three mysteries actually posed in the show so far... Where did the mc's power come from? (I don't really care) Why is the girl the mc is chasing shifty? (I don't really care) and why can you not see the sky? (I don't really care?) This show is quite obviously building towards a big reveal, probably the finale of the first season, but until that point it feels like we are just stuck waiting for something to actually happen.
The characters are extremely basic (so far). None of them strike me as unique or interesting yet, and the main character is your typical ignorant and nice guy. His motivation is to find a woman and he has quite a lot of potential with magic or 'shinsu'. But he is below average as shonen MC's go. (and TOG is pretty much your typical shonen) Every character in design and story feels like a rehash of other typical characters from other shows. If you are interested because you think it being a manhwa might make it quite original, don't be, it is quite obviously inspired by manga/anime and hasn't developed to a point where these characters are meaty enough to be all that interesting.
The only thing I can praise about the show is its art. I find the colour a bit too vibrant, but the actual visual style is quite unique and impressive. It doesn't feel like your typical isekai art style and it (and the hype around it) made me hopeful for the series. The problem is the animation. I am fully sure they had financial or time constraints in the shows production. The fights feel slow, and there is a general lack of detail and effects in them. While it feels like they were close to being quite good, they just feel so off and sluggish that I have honestly seen better action in slice of life's... And if you don't think the show suffered from any problems in production, I just have to point at the one cour adaptation and the opening with black screens with credits. I think TOG has the worst opening (visually) that I have ever seen full stop.
The POTENTIAL for TOG to be good is there. I doubt the series could manufacture such a fanbase based on what I have seen so far. The problem is, it is so god damn slow and there is nothing there to keep you invested. My advise, wait for the season to end and binge it. Or even better, wait for more content to be adapted, then watch it. Right now, it's essentially the Hunter X Hunter exam except there is no Hisoka and every other character isn't as interesting. The vast majority of the positivity for the show comes from the fans of the source material and your typical isekai/shonen fans who'd think Isekai Cheat Magician is a respectable show...

So a few episodes in and I feel like I have to make clear that this isn't JUST a romantic comedy... Is there romance? Yep. Is there comedic scenes and so on? Yep. But there is more to it than just light hearted, awkward situations for us to laugh at the harem protagonist.
Ore wo Suki gives us characters far more real than your normal romcom. So far, almost everyone has some sort of dark, manipulative side to them and there IS a solid story. With events happening that could outright ruin the MC. Is there some sort of harem tide into it? Of course
...
there is. But it isn't as simple as slipping down the stairs and landing in a convenient way. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
If you do like romantic comedies, this is still very much for you. I mean it has an evil bench that plays the Darth Vader theme, what more do you want? But if you are the type who avoids romcom harem shows like the plague, I'd suggest watching the first episode at least. There is an actual story to this, it's not a show that relies on 'plot' and girls, though I will say this gives us both.

Another isekai parody that we know well and love...
If you liked Konosuba, in particular it's eccentric characters, then you will probably love this too. If you don't like silly comedy isekai's then I suggest you check the genre tags in the future.
While Konosuba focused on a parody via realism: with money problems, weakness and plenty of misunderstandings; Cautious Hero focuses on a parody via caution despite power. Rather than confidently waking into a battle to have some Death Note-like strategy that all goes according to plan, Cautious Hero gives us a hero that repeatedly blows up where a lvl 1 slime once was with Megumin
...
level explosions just in case a few particles of its corpse remains.
Just like with Konosuba, don't expect some amazing background story. It's really just a classic isekai scenario with a demon king and his minions trying to take over a fantasy world. It's simply just a fun character comedy done right.
