Up until approximately episode 16, the series was amazing and engaging. However, it became totally shallow and without any evolution.
What did the end of the anime want to teach? Who knows... The anime was reduced to 24 long episodes of pure revenge and nothing more.
Everyone loves the Count of Monte Cristo. The plot tries to convey the view that "don't be angry with him, he suffered a lot, everything is justified". And then we see the protagonist chasing after him despite everything, like the little puppy he always was. And all this for what? ANYTHING!
The Count of Monte Cristo hasn't changed a thousandth of his
...
mind. To the end he used everyone, including his loyal servants, to exact his revenge on innocent people who had nothing to do with his suffering.
Yes, it's true that the Count of Monte Cristo had a few moments, however, it was at the beginning of the plot, during the first 16 episodes, when the character was definitely not evil.
Also, I want to point out that all the characters' relationships are superficial and poorly developed. Even the protagonist's romance with Eugenie. In fact, the protagonist showed more feelings for Peppo, and their relationship was so intimate, that it makes no sense for him to be in love with Eugenie, since he never showed any feelings or intimacy with her until halfway through the series.
