Was it all just a dream? Or maybe a vision? No, it was real...

Hello,

I got into anime when it started blowing up in the west in the late 90's/early 2000's, early Toonami years. Dropping off around the time Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto were coming out. I have a soft spot for the older stuff from that time. In the past few years I've got back into it and am trying to watch some of the stuff I missed from that time and also some newer notable things.

If it looks like we have some similar interests, feel free to send me a friend request.

I'm never mad for suggestions if the person thinks I would enjoy it.

Oh that's good to know!!!

I actually found the Gundam Seed manga at a thrift store. So maybe reading some of it will get me to give it another shot.

I read that manga many years ago when I became a new anime/manga fan, I gave that one an 8 on my score. So yeah I would go with that direction first, then try again re-watching the anime, maybe it'll grow on you.

Yeah but I was like 13 so I just got into other things. I never disliked the anime I had discovered. I just didn't like the new crop of shows that had hit it big at the time. I was over stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh that was dominated anime talks with people I knew. I've always had multiple interests, anime was just, let's say, deprioritized.

Even before her I was still watching the odd anime here or reading a manga. And no I have not yet watched Death Note, as mentioned, I was aware of wildly popular anime that were going on, I just never made it a priority to seek them out to watch.

I see, that explains it.

As mentioned before, I was there for when things started to take off in the west around 1999-2000 and then dropped off. Nobody in my friend group was likey into the shows listed above, so nobody came to me clamoring that I should watch "Love Hina".

Thank you for the clarification.

However, Gundam Seed was one of the shows that turned me off from anime back in 2003-2004.

OK, so suggesting Gundam SEED was not a good idea, my apologies.

But thank you for replying back to me, appreciate it.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'm liking the over the top nature of it.

I'll tell you what, how about I help you increase your anime list, did you know Gundam SEED is on Netflix, do you have a Netflix subscription? You can watch the whole series on there, well that and it's sequel, Gundam SEED Destiny are also on Netflix too.

Also Zeta Gundam is on Youtube, you need to turn on CC to have the English subtitle to show up, I'll embed 2 episodes below for you:

I'm not sure if you may like this, this is an anime from 1988, you can watch it with fansub on Youtube, it's called Sonic Soldier Borgman:

Again, turn on CC for English subtitles. But I must give you a warning, out of 35 episodes, only 23 episodes are subtitled excellently and free of any flaws. But episode 24-35, the subtitle done by another fansub is inferior and there are bunch of name changes in the subtitles. So just watch the 1st 23 episodes, I don't know where to find the better subtitle for 24-35.

I hope these help!!!

you said:
I dropped out from anime around 2004, as noted in my bio, around the time Yu-gi-oh and Naruto were taking off in the west. I kind of just didn't get into the next wave of shows as my interests changed.

Ah I see. I did get chance to re-read your bio and I missed that part. It's was a shame too because there were anime that weren't shown on Cartoon Network's Toonami and Adult Swim that wasn't broadcasted.

I knew of some shows that were big but just had other interests.

You can have multiple interests, and still watch anime and read manga. I became a K-pop fan in 2013 (as my profile have shown).

My girlfriend showed me a couple shows she liked and it got me back into it. So now I'm catching up on some that I wanted to watch bad then but never had access to, as internet video was in its infancy and watching some newer stuff as well.

Well, I'm glad your girlfriend got you back into anime. But as I said, you had a lot of missed opportunity in late 2000's to watch some well-known anime like Love Hina, Please Teacher!, Please Twins!, Negima!. All of these anime I listed are the one that got me deep in the fandom. Don't tell me you didn't watched Death Note or Cowboy Bebop when it was on Adult Swim. I mean how on earth did you missed all of that? Didn't nobody ever told you about anime that is not shown on Adult Swim when you left anime in 2004?

A lot of it has been garbage as I'll watch whatever is free on platforms like Tubi while I'm working sometimes.

Uh, did nobody ever introduced you to Crunchyroll (pre-Sony acquisition era) back in late 2000's? Did you not know about Gundam 00 was shown on Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) in 2008?

I mean what happened, did nobody told you about anime gaining big ground in the US in late 2000's with these titles I just mentioned above?

I accepted your friend request after checking out your profile, I do have a question: You said you've been a anime fan since the "anime boom" in the late 90's/early 2000's, and you written that you were in 1988. You do know MAL was founded in 2004, around the time you were watching anime. You could've joined around the same year as I did. So why you signed up for MAL this year instead of 2008, 2009, 2010? Why didn't you sign up/join MAL decades earlier?
Brans94 Nov 23, 2024 7:43 AM
Ah, yeah. I remember this one. I never got around to watching it. I need to get on it soon.
