Mob Psycho starts out as the story of an awkward middle schooler with superpowers slowly developing into a functional and self assured human being through various encounters and experiences, but it turns into a mini Naruto towards the end of the second season with all the moralizing and boring lectures.
The characters are pretty flat. The antagonists are plain boring, with no interesting motivations or ideologies. They are essentially hollow plot devices for Mob to practice his Talk no Jutsu on. Which has a marvelous success rate, by the way. Throw in the token idol school crush and you have a totally generic and unremarkable

cast. They could have done something with Mob's brother and the dynamic between them, but eh, that kinda went nowhere.
It is extremely gratifying to see Mob beating the living hell out of someone with the badass berserk mode OST playing in the back. The animation is outstanding. If they stuck to the fights as the main focus of the show, I would have been fine. They aren't tactical showdowns nor do they contribute to an intellectually stimulating story, but that is totally acceptable. The fights become more frequent and less interesting as the series goes on. There isn't a strict power curve and the power system is pretty vague. The battles become more Dragon Ball esque as the series progresses. It also frequently breaks the momentum by inserting boring dialogue into solid action sequences. Comedy is listed as a genre, but I don't think there's anywhere near enough humor in the series for that to be justified.
I liked the show, warts and all. I am just not quite sure what the schtick is at this point. It could have been a coming of age SoL/ action, or an action comedy/ parody like One Punch Man. However, the focus is unclear. It takes a couple of steps in a few directions without any clear commitment, resulting in an incoherent mess.
To recapitulate,
Pros:
- Animation and production value
- Sound
- Action sequences
Cons-
- Unfocused story
- Flat characters
- Boring dialogue
- Pacing issues
