● 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆
It doesn't typically start like any other fantasy with the aim of defeating demon king. Rather it's about the story of the journey that comes afterwards with it's significance unfolded along the way instead of revealing the purpose early on. Truly, it's not about the ending rather the joy of journey itself.
● 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
The transitional storytelling is smooth. The connection of present event with similar past event comes with cohesive direction. You'll never feel one scene popping after another instead you'll
...
feel the connection of relevance.
● 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰
An unorthodox diverse perspective of magic in typical fantasy world building. It doesn't have a great world building and that's exactly the reason it made difference in that generic framework by showcasing in that very set up that "adventure" is NOT always about fighting rather it's about the "joy of journey" itself. Different world building wouldn't have made it "relevant or relatable"
Source of all magic is same. So yes it would be generic. But it's not "generic" like about exploring that fire, water, earth, air and such basic elements. Magic is not presented as random healing/just offensive power in the typical setting. Rather the presentation focuses more on the perspective showcasing "magic is fun" to some and to others it's a "tool for killing"
Unique presentation of how devotion in suppressing mana (not sealing) for lifetime can turn out as lethal weapon.
● 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗿: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘂𝗽
Though not foreshadowed long before but whenever it's necessary the show doesn't shy of taking time in build up to avoid deus ex machina. It takes time for about half/full episode for the build up by showcasing things of past. One such example is about the past of deceptive mana suppression revealed later in Frieren the Slayer episode just before the final showdown. It didn't feel like popping out of nowhere.
● 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀: 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
Hero is not always about welding powerful sword, it's about the willful intention to do good and courage to apply that. Warrior is not about courage rather about hard work. Fear can be a method of growth. Expressing these meaningful thematic ideas into cohesive conversations and blending them with light hearted ones is mastery of story and script writing.
● 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗘𝗹𝗳'𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻, 𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲
This is basically a character driven show. Long lifespan comes with the gift of longevity but also with the curse of not appreciating things timely. Frieren gets self realisation along the journey but also paves way for the growth of new generation of humans by interacting with them. How the impact of character like Himmel was portrayed without even existing in present time required extraordinary direction. Most of the fantasy shows either portrays the parallelism of good among demons or their brutality. But Frieren dives deep into their non cooperative deceptive nature with pride in magic that turns out to be a fatal flaw.
● 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
A simple example will be when Ubel fights her clone; there are intentional spreading of dust by both to obstruct each other's full view to stop them from using binding spell.
● 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
Evan Call, the music composer of Violet Evergarden masterfully crafted atmospheric soundtracks which were perfectly used in suitable moments.
