Blue lock kind of betrays it's installed premise and for the most part that's a good thing!
Before we get into the review, there is a huge red flag I need to discuss. Blue lock is not realistic, I know it's quite shocking and saddening to enjoy this but alas it's not grounded in realism. No you can't spin in the air like a beyblade, no you can't join a death game of the sport of your choosing in japan. It's such a letdown...
Alright enough of that, blue lock is probably the most fun I've had with a sports manga/anime since eyeshield 21 mostly because of
...
how outrageous it is, even though eyeshield 21 still takes the cake. In my opener I talked about realism not being present for the most part which works great in its favor most of the time. I wanted insane edgelords fighting over ball doing the most ridiculous things possible without completely breaking the game, and it delivered beautifully.
The characters are fine I'd say, besides isagis group and barou and a couple others there really isn't much to say. I'm really tired of the criticism of its a troupe when if we boil down to it, everything is a troupe because everything has been done before. There is a meme explaining why Ed from good burger was better then eren from Aot which perfectly describes my feelings on some takes I've seen regarding the characters.
The animation and the artstyle took a nosedive after episode 13, watching the last episode then reading the manga chapter of it took such a hit in quality it should be a crime. Speaking about the manga, imo the cut conversations between some of the players honestly sucks because we got to know a bit about them or even see how they strategize before a match. It's not a complete wash but it definitely would have helped.
At the beginning I said that blue lock kind of betrays it's initial premise and I stand by that. What I was presented was hey its a free for all ,you will lose if you are too kind(wink), that everyone in here is an insane edgelord. And for the most part none of that paned out. Ofc there are cases of rin, barou, and sometimes isagi going super puzzle but outsides that most people we have interacted with are relatively tame. Sure they all want to win and it being the main factor but they all don't really act the same. Another thing is the free for all.... it's not... that's good because I'd question the actual in narrative not hypotheticals. The best part of blue lock and my favorite sports anime eyeshield 21 is seeing charismatic characters with out talents or specialties come together to make a chemical reaction or good teamwork for normal people. It's started in ep 4 and gladly it stayed like this until the end of s1.
I'd recommend blue lock to both non football and football fans as long as they know this shit is nutty and never tries to sell you a false reality, well a little bit but I promise it's a fun and entertaining time.
