These are episodic stories following medical professionals of the unusual, facing philosophical issues through fantastical lenses and fanding that there are often no simple answers. They take a carefully paced approach with little in the way of cartoonish antics, and often leave you wanting to just go stare out the window for a while to think. However, they're substantially different in setting and art style, and there's no pretending that one isn't the older and wiser of the two, even while the other grapples with some of the issues of technology that face us today and in the near future. Nevertheless, I give this a cross-recommendation: there's so little like these that gets made, that you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not try both if you like one.

Okko's Inn/Wakaokami wa Shougakusei and Figure 17 are stories about children learning to deal with loss, set in beautiful rural environments to superb soundtracks, and combining both slice-of-life and spec-fic elements. Figure 17 is the more action-oriented of the two, though it uses its long runtime to pace that out with very gentle rustic lifestyle content, while Okko's Inn has to squeeze its plot in quite swiftly by comparison. Nevertheless, both feel like a reminder of worthiness of life to be lived.
