A new milestone in anime. This show completely blew my mind.
Almost 6x 10 .
Story (10) I won't say anything about the story because i don't want to spoil a second of this masterpiece for anyone. This should tell you how good it is.
Just watch... you will understand.
Only thing that could keep you from liking the show is when you don't like animes where most parts of the world are explained later
Art (8) Every scene conveys much atmosphere and emotion. There are beautiful landscapes. Some of the background animations are a little generic though.
Sound (10) There are some repetitive themes but they are actually quite
...
good. And everytime a new musical piece is introduced it is amazingly good.
They nailed it with "Elegy for Rem". Such a powerful track. Every note conveys the intense emotions in the scene.
I can't give enough credit to the voice actors. Every character is filled with life by their outstanding voice acting.
Character (10) Probably the defining strength of Re: Zero. The characters undergo a believable yet surprising development.
And they are quite memorable as well since they don't fulfill many anime character cliches.
A good character is a character the viewer cares about. I definetly did...
One dialogue between two characters is enough to fill an entire episode without getting boring.
Enjoyment (10) This anime made me laugh, sob and long for the next episode.
Watch this and thank me later ;)

The Animatrix consists of 9 completely different shorts so it's hard to review in one go but let's try.
I can only say that I really wished that the original sequels to the first matrix movie were a bit more like these shorts. They are much closer to what I loved about the first movie than the sequels.
To everyone new to the matrix I always use to say: "Don't watch Reloaded and Revolutions. They are bullcrap. Watch the first movie and animatrix and be done with it."
Before taking a short look at each episode I just want to say that this collection is a must
...
have for people who like high quality anime productions.
The Final Flight of the Osiris 9:
The Final Flight of the Osiris tells a story about a crew of a rebel ship in the real world. The animations and fighting scenes are breathtaking (measured by the standards of 2003). The story is well made and has the typical dark matrix atmosphere.
The Second Renaissance 7
Explains how the Matrix and the rule of the machines came to be.
Visually well done.
Kid's Story 7:
Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) contributed this weird looking movie to the OVA. It's not very "pretty" because they left the drawings "raw" on purpose. Looks kinda cool though.
World Record 7:
Nicely done short about a man crossing the boundaries of the matrix by his own willpower. Nice idea but I don't like the art that much.
Beyond 7:
Beyond gives a good perspective on errors in the matrix. Not that action packed but nice to watch.
A Detective's Story 10:
Strongest short on the DVD in my opinion. A film-noir style short about a detective. It's dark, badass and clever.
Matriculated 9:
I don't like Peter Chung's artstyle that much. In my eyes Aeon Flux looked horrible. This one is different though. The after-effects look nice, and the story is sad and beautiful.

Decent anime but just too long. Even though I gave only a 5 I really recommend to watch a few episodes. If you are into crime stories there are some very very good and creative puzzles that little Conan solves. But then there are too many of them and not all of them are of the same quality. Conan would have gotten a way higher rating if it was shorter and would progress a little faster in the story. But all those mediocre episodes where nothing happens except that there is yet another murder going on and eventually solved by our main character just spoil
...
the whole anime. It just get's frustrating when you want to find out more about the main plot and you really have to search for it among this huge load of episodes.
Detective Conan is great... for a few episodes. Because it has one major problem: it's just too long and repetitive. Did I mention that it's too long and repetitive? If not let me say it's too long and repetitive.

To all the people who like/love this anime: I'm sorry... but I find this anime so bad it's even offensive to the viewer.
Everytime I have a conversation about anime where I need an example for a terrible work the first name that comes to my mind is Sengoku Basara. It is probably the worst anime i have ever seen. I never dropped an anime so fast and I probably never ever will again.
But everytime I shrugged off one reason to drop this anime, the next scene gave me another to just stop watching.
The dialogues are horrible, the characters are annoying, the fighting scenes are absurd,
...
ridiculous and just bad.
There is nothing that could possibly get you hooked. Well it could but only if you, for some reason, have a thing for useless fight scenes and bad character introductions and story-telling and uninspired works in general.
And to all the people who say that this one refers to Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors....why would someone make an anime about that? Dynasty Warriors has no story and it doesn't need one. But an anime does.
Sengoku is a pretty interesting period of japanese history. It's the golden age of warriors and leaves room for billions of interesting narratives. But instead of taking the chance by doing a great somwhat historical anime, they come up with this bulls*** where some of the main characters do have historical names but for some reason also have some weird superpowers.
Not only do these superpowers seem misplaced...
The thing with superpowers is that in order to make them interesting you got to find a way to give the viewer an idea of how they work. Sengoku Basara does none of it. It just throws explosions in your face because, you know, explosions are cool and badass.
The characters are so replaceable I forgot about them the moment their screentime ended. They were not interesting they were only a mix of different stereotypes. You get the feeling that you have seen each character introduced in the first episode a billion times before in many other titles.
I won't lose another word about this....thing. It already stole 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. Don't watch it, except you're in the mood for some real trash.

I just finished this anime with a friend of mine. We were watching all the episodes in one go which kinda indicates how hooked we were.
The tension builds up nicely and one reveal is more spectacular than the other. Of course this anime has it's downsides but let's take a closer look at every aspect.
Story:
While the first half of the anime feels like a light shonen anime, it smoothely progresses up to the very big showdown.
The creators of this show understood one thing so many hollywood studios tend to forget. An epic and spectacular fight scene is somewhat useless when it does not
...
help to develop a character. Nanatsu no Taizai does everything right here. During the fight you learn a lot about the people who fight, why they fight and how they feel. Prepare for awesome plot twists and revealed secrets.
Sometimes a bit cheesy though.
Art: Looks nice. A bit too much bubble-gum atmosphere for my personal taste but still good and leaves nothing to bitch about.
Sound: Some flaws here. Sometimes the music doesn't fit too well to the scene. Still some nice folk-music in it.
Character:
The character development especially during the fights is great.
I didn't like that they introduced the 6th Deadly Sin so late in the series and told the viewer nothing about her while we got to see a lot from the other characters. Maybe that will change in Season 2.
Enjoyment:
Couldn't stop watching.
A few plot-holes here and there but luckily the show manages to make up for that with it's brilliant character development.

Brilliant dystopian anime that is not made to please. Because a dystopia shouldn't be. The only 10/10/10/10/10/10 i will probably ever give.
Well this is, in my opinion, the best anime I have ever seen because it is like no anime I have ever seen. It is not made to please you or present you a simple story with likeable characters. It is made to make you think, to confuse you and you probably won't get it's meaning if you don't sink your teeth deep inside every single scene to suck out every little drop of imagery and hidden message. This anime is a masterpiece
...
on it's own.
It's major strength that makes it shine above any other anime is that it's concept is so daring. No other anime dares to walk away so far from the mainstream even though you can clearly see that it's production wasn't cheap at all. No funny moments, no likeable characters, no "feel good moments" no easy plot, only a few actual cliffhangers.
Being probably the most polarizing work among AAA titles, this one will not present you a story that is easy to digest. It will shove a bunch of stones in your stomach just to see if you can carry their weight.
In fact most parts of the story are happening in the protagonist's mind. And it as a whole is a metaphore. You can't review on Ergo Proxy without starting to interpret it.
Story 10/10
So let's say this anime is about finding one's own identity in a system where everyone is supposed to be the same. Our character needs to clear his mind from the brainwashing he experienced. The system and it's ways of surpressing the individuality of people makes it hard for our main character to understand what he himself truly is: powerful. He needs to destroy society to heal mankind and the earth from it's wounds.
The earth is completely destroyed. The air outside is toxic and people only live in protected areas, artificial cities where everyone is put in line and is supposed to behave just like the system wants him to.
Most work is done by androids. People who want to migrate to the city have to prove their worth and their will to abandon their own self to fit into society. And then suddenly a mysterious creature starts murdering people.
The themes of Ergo Proxy certainly are not easy and this is not an anime to watch just to kill a little time and be done with it. Most scenes are only dreams and metaphors and sometimes you won't be able to tell what the "reality" is. Have fun... or not.
Art (10/10)
Ergo Proxy looks terrific. It has it's own style that can't be compared to anything i've seen so far. The characters look more human, each emotion is conveyed by their facial expression. But it's unique style is also meant to polarize. Nearly every image creates a cold, hopeless, dark and uneasy atmosphere.
I loved that weird aesthetic to it.
Sound (10/10)
The sound is minimalistic and absolutely on point. It helps the art to create that grim and dark atmosphere. The sound of a little android girl playing melodica in a ghosttown in a dark wasteland with only the wind blowing dust through the alleys. That's how you tell a story with a few images and few sounds.High quality production in every way.
The voice-talents are outstanding. Especially Re-l sounds icecold at the beginning and then her voice changes in tone according to her development.
Another point to mention: the soundtrack. Oh my god they put a Radiohead song in the credits. And it even sounds like it was written for the show (even though Paranoid Android was released years before Ergo Proxy was). Radiohead only gave their approval after watching the show (and they obviously liked it). I loved it as much as I loved the Opening theme by Monoral. It's weird though to hear some perfect english when listening to an anime opening and ending.
Character (10/10)
While Vincent is somewhat likeable because he is the typical loser at the beginning of the show, Re-l isn't likeable at all. She is a dick, cold and heartless with no visible emotion and therefore perfect for this anime.
The only thing that makes her appealing at the beginning is her curiosity and intelligence.
But Ergo Proxy is all about character development so there is much to see here in the course of events.
Enjoyment (10/10)
If you like sophisticated stuff like me, this one is a must see. It will make you think and reflect about freedom, identity, the system you live in, right and wrong, the future, emotions, life.
I recommend to watch all the episodes without pausing for too long to completely comprehend what is going on. Even if you do you should probably watch the anime twice or more in your lifetime to get everything.
Either you love or hate this anime but that's what art is about. What this anime clearly does is making you feel. It makes you feel terrible in a way you can enjoy. Have fun.

Writing a review on One Piece is very difficult.
With over 740 episodes and counting it is one of the biggest shows ever. It is only logical that there is a wide range of quality to be seen here.
Some of the story arcs are genius (Enie's Lobby) while others should have been left out because they are either way too long (i'm looking at you thriller bark) or simply not good.
Unlike any other anime, this one got me hooked for more than 200 episodes. I just couldn't stop watching which resulted in heavy binge-watching sessions which cut out my social life for more than
...
a weak. How did One Piece do that? First of all, the characters. The characters are One Piece's biggest strength and probably the reason why it is that popular. They are unique, they are funny and remain interesting. While Ruffy is our main character here, One Piece gives his sidekicks way more love than any other anime series. Each of them has a heart-breaking past of his own, while each of them managed to get to a point in his life where he/she found his or her strength again.
Second the humor. While some of the jokes in the series become kind of dull because they get repeated over and over again, some of them become running gags that work absolutely well. Nothing here is taken too seriously which gives Oda and his team many opportunities to surprise with new creative ideas.
Of course this creativity get's visibly exhausted at some points in the series. It is just too long to be sustained over presumably 1200 episodes that they will produce until we finally know what the One Piece really is in the first place. Many of these episodes especially the fighting scenes are stretching among 50 to 70 episodes while not much happens in each single episode.
From all the long-term animes it is probably the best and definetly surpasses it's competitor Naruto in creativity, humor and especially when it comes to characters.
If you don't like animes that are completed way too soon, One Piece gives you the opportunity to fall in love with a bunch of characters who will probably accompany you for many years.

Everytime I watch some of the original Dragonball episodes I wonder why people mostly cared for Dragonball Z. While Dragonball Z consists of people staring and screaming at each other without doing anything until one of them kills the other guy who then get's resurrected only to continue to stare and scream at his killer, Dragonball tells an interesting story with many interesting characters good (and more importantly short) fighting scenes and a lot of good humor. Unlike Dragonball Z, Dragonball does not need fights were planets get destroyed in the process to keep the viewers attention. It manages to keep the viewer going
...
with many good ideas which Toriyama had at the time making him want to explore the world alongside Goku and his friends.
Waaaay better than Z and unlike DBZ it is timeless and still makes a good watch.

Sword Art Online was surprisingly successful here in germany.
Everyone urged me to watch this so I did and my thoughts afterwards were: yeah it's okay but why are you guys all going bat shit crazy about this anime?
Me personally I don't get it.
Story (5) !!!SPOILER ALERT!!!
I admit, the first two episodes build up a huge potential. But I had to realize that they did not seem to be willing to use any of that potential at all.
They just present you irrelevant side-kicks which they kill off pretty soon.
The story is so fast paced that you don't even have time to like any of
...
it.
All happens so fast that i found it hard to care about anything that was going on.
If they would have kept it down a bit, maybe SAO would have been a great anime. But like this it is almost inevitable that all those plot holes and deus ex macchina moments show up.
Art (9) : Yes the anime looks great. They did a great job and really tried to compete among other AAA titles and they created some pretty awesome pictures. The beautiful images created were one of the few things that kept me going throughout season 1.
Sound (9) : Great job here as well. Nothing to bitch about.
Character (6): Like I said. Due to the fast pace of the anime I didn't even have time to like any of the characters and even if I did they were killed off anyway before I knew anything about them.
Enjoyment (6): Since they didn't really develop the characters, made me rush through way too compact storylines, there was nothing to enjoy except for the well done fighting scenes.
This anime clearly was not for me. If you like very fast paced stories and don't care that much about detail give it a go. You will enjoy the fighting scenes and maybe one or two major reveals.
If you are looking for a complex story and interesting characters, move on to a different anime, there is nothing to see here.

I am really surprised to read all those positive reviews here since I dropped the manga pretty quick. What can I say? First I was excited to read another story by Lynn Okamoto who created Elfenlied one of my favorite animes.
But as before when I read the Elfenlied manga I was pretty disappointed when I read Brynhildr.
Elfenlied was, in my opinion, pretty much saved by the anime studio. They cut the story off at just the right moment before Okamoto messed his whole story up.
When I read Brynhildr I felt like he did not really dare to do something new or at
...
least somehow different. He used all the same imagery and storylines, mixed them up a little and sold a new manga from it. This really felt like a lack of creativity, so I dropped it pretty soon.
