Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Anime) add

This review will contain spoilers, because I find this movie difficult in particular to critique without specifically mentioning the details. I will separate spoilers into their own paragraphs starting with a - so just skip them if you wish.

Story (7)

The overall story is quite fantastic. Creative idea that specifically focuses on the unique difficulties that the main character faces as she raises these children. There is a lot of dedication and sacrifice based themes that were well developed. The only issue is that nearing the end, things start to take a wrong turn. A confliction arises within the characters (which there is nothing wrong with), ... but instead of this being resolved, some sort of unnecessary ultimatum is reached leaving us with a rather empty ending. I am specifically referring to *SPOILERS*

-I just don't get why they had to choose between living as a wolf or human. They're half and half (actually their dad wasn't even a full wolf so they're more human if anything), why can't they just be both? I was thinking the story was leading to them learning how to adapt and accept both parts of who they are, instead of blatantly rejecting one. This was quite disappointing and felt unresolved. Another significant consequence of this (especially in Ame's case) is abandoning their mom that we saw go through hell and back to keep them alive. Like damn dude how hard is it to visit your mom every now and then? The scene where he almost died is less dramatic knowing it's implied she'll never see him again in the end - as if she would realistically be that OK with letting her 10 year old son go even though he's too young to reasonably make such a big decision and he's not showing her the love and respect she deserves. Excellent story about the sacrifices and dedication of being a mom, but a poor ending that could've had a much better lesson. I found myself caring about Ame less and less as a character nearing the end which is quite a shame.

Art and Sound (9)

Art and sound were fantastic. No complaints here, on par with the high expectations I had considering the production and names behind the film.

Character (7)

Many of the issues concerning the characters relate to the previously mentioned criticism. Besides unreasonable conclusions and decisions, the characters are interesting enough. Particularly the kids whose behaviors' provide a dichotomy of sorts, giving us two different perspectives. These should have been two different sides to the same coin, but instead the movie drives this separation too deep. Nevertheless, the main and side characters are very lovable (besides Ame who never really grew on me).

Overall (8 - almost 7)

Besides the completely unnecessary ultimatum presented at the end of the film, and a resolution that missed an opportunity for a better theme instead of just inciting sadness into its viewers, this movie was quite fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed it up until the end that left me feeling a bit empty and unsatisfied. I would certainly still recommend it to anyone as it was quite enjoyable despite its flaws.

Violet Evergarden (Anime) add

I'll keep this quick-ish and spoiler free for those who may be considering giving this show a watch. Skip to the end if you just want a quick conclusion.

Story (8)

The story of Violet Evergarden is very good, but not spectacular. It covers a time period nearing the end of war and the struggles that come from it. Violet, originally being a emotionless tool of war, is learning to acclimate to the real world and come to terms with her emotions that she has yet been able to express. While there is one overarching story, each episode seems to be a little story of its own ... that ultimately contributes to Violets character development. The show overall has a slice of life feel to it, and incites a wide range of emotions into its viewers with ease. It seems to start out a bit slow as it sets up the characters and plot, but don't abandon it quite yet as it picks up heavily around episode 7.

Art (10)

The best part of this anime hands down is the art. This isn't much of a surprise, and is typically what initially peaks everyone's interest in the show. Nothing much to say here other than it's absolutely awe inspiring.

Sound (9)

The sound is great. Voice acting is fine, opening and closing songs are bangers, and the symphonic background music is beautiful and really contributes to the mood of the show. Great stuff.

Character (9)

Initially this category wasn't that great. Violet seemed to be an uninteresting and typical-for-anime stoic character who simply doesn't understand emotions. But as the show went on, I was completely surprised to see excellent character development, which seems to be lacking in many anime's. I was very happy that there was reasons for why she was the way she was, and that the events throughout the show impacted her. The other characters in the show were very good as well but I won't waste any time expanding on them since the focus is around the MC.

Enjoyment (8)

I really did enjoy this anime, but I wasn't head over heels for it. I think almost anyone who gets through this whole show would also enjoy it, but it may not be their absolute favorite. Basically, there's no reason not to give it a shot and I doubt anyone would regret watching.

Overall (9)

Overall this is an excellent anime. What seemed only OK at first really had me gripped by episode 7. I doubt anyone would dislike this show, but if for some reason someone does, they can at least enjoy one of the most visually pleasing anime's of all time. I would recommend it to anyone, and while it may not be the favorite of many, it certainly won't let you down.
