[SPOILER FREE] Even if you hid the artist's name from it, I would clearly know that this is is one of Inio Asano's work; this is not only because of the characteristic art style that separates him from another artists, which you can see how it has matured over the years and ended up depicting an unique style altogether with the photorealism he uses for his backgrounds, but, all of the story direction tells you a lot from his previous works, how the characters evolve during the story and also the use of the slice of life genre to make what it seems as everyday
...
situations become dramatic and exaggerated.
This, for me, is the most blatant self insertion Asano has done on any of his mangas, this shows us another side of what he thought could become his future under the pressure of already having done his biggests works and that he still would have to deliver something people look for in his mangas. Even though this story starts quite normally, just depicting the mundane everyday life of a mangaka with all the problems it carries on a daily basis, but as it progresses you start to understand everything on a more personal level.
It teaches how working towards our goals can end up being a double edged sword, how life can just go by or even developing abhorrence for things you once felt passion for. How casual encounters can become life turning before everything goes «downhill» again. Fuzakawa's life can be seen as relatable as yours, his goals become the burden he carries as he seems himself not achieving anything great once again, that the world wouldn't recognize “not-mindless-slop” that his work was. This shows how crude and lonely the life of an artist can be, that to achieve a great quality you have to sacrifice your time and your relationships.
This short, desperation filled manga, with the aspect of drama and slice of life is a must read if you want to get into other stories from him, It pretty much sums up what kind of work you can expect from Inio Asano..
