This review will be for the whole of Gintama, not just the first season. Gintama is a comedy anime with lots of slap stick humor, dick and shit jokes, parodies,4th wall breaks, and just straight up nonsense at times.... and its the greatest thing ever. Gintama is not a show that you should binge because its an episodic show. The show starts with random episodes, slowly introducing characters that will be seen throughout the rest of the show, and any sort of cohesive plot starts around episode 17 with snippets of some backstory and future plot, and the first serious arc starts at around

episode 48. With all this said, if you don't like the comedy of Gintama, it may not be for you, Gintama is truly a comedy show with serious arc strewn around, and the serious arcs are made so much better since so much time is spent with the characters in the comedy arcs and episodes. If you aren't feeling Gintama at the beginning, watch till episode 50 where the first serious arc starts, and if you still don't like it, get to episode 79, which is one of the funniest early episodes. This may sound like a lot, but over a course of a few months of watching it isn't bad. I watched Gintama over the course of about 5 months, and it took me a few months to get through the first season, but its worth it.
Characters: 10/10
Gintama has one of the best cast of characters in any anime that I have seen, all the main and side characters are memorable, and they all eventually get backstories. All the characters get developed, and all have great moments in both comedy and serious arcs. Gintoki is one of the best main characters in any anime because he is both hilarious in any episode he is in, and in the serious arcs, he is one of the most deep and developed characters. Because the show is episodic and pretty long, all the characters interact with eachother, and almost every character combination happens throughout the show. Any episodes with Katsura or the Shinsengumi are always good, and the emotional moments in the serious arcs are some the best in any anime. All the characters are memorable and they are some of my favorite characters in any show.
Story: 9.5/10
Its hard to put a score for the story because of the episodic nature of the show, but ill try. The story for the comedy arcs don't really matter, since the comedy is the main focus. It doesn't really matter what situation their in since it will always be ridiculous. For the serious arcs, they are great. It has an interesting story with good lore and depth to the characters. At the peak of Gintama in the 4th season in THE arcs of the show, they are top ten arcs in all of anime. The epic moments hit hard and the emotional moments hit hard. Gintama doesn't let the foot off the gas and is good till the very end. The final movie is one of the best anime movies, and is a very satisfying ending.
Music: 10/10
What can I say, its really good. The Ops slap and the Eds slap. I would argue that the Endings are even better then the openings. And for the final episode of each serious arc, they switch the op and eds. Also in some ops and eds, they change things in them depending on what is happening in the show, so I would recommend watching them.
Animation: 9/10
Animation is good and the visual comedy is great. Its comedy so it doesn't need god tier animation, and the art style and character designs are very good. The fight scenes are surprisingly good for it not being an action anime, and the animation gets better as the seasons go through.
Enjoyment: 9.5/10
Not all the episodes are banger, but I still enjoyed it a lot, and its in my top 3 shows of all time. I was skeptical going in, ut i would recommend it to anyone and I wish there was more.
Overall: 10/10
I've laughed the hardest in this shows out of any show, and it has made my cry. Don't skip any episodes and watch it over a course of a few months to fully enjoy the whole thing.
