Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is possibly the most unique anime I've seen to this day. So much about it is good, so I'm going to go ahead and get started.

Story:Story is really where Higurashi excels. The story itself follows several different arcs, each one having a fairly different storyline, but following the same general base. Without spoiling too much, it's hard to explain exactly how the arcs work, but each one has you questioning the villain until you find out later on.

Art:The art style of Higurashi is what puts off a good bit of people I've talked to from watching it. Personally, ... I like it, especially the grimmer parts of the series when it takes a bit of a shift into the surreal and insane side. Still, it's different than any other anime I've seen, and is pretty astounding.

Sound:The voice actors are pretty incredibly done. The soundtrack is mostly good, but I didn't care for the opening or ending. I rarely like openings or endings though, so that probably doesn't mean much.

Characters:Higurashi has well developed characters and appropriate voice actors for every character. Determining a main character could be quite hard since each arc follows somebody different, though most would agree on Rika. My small problem with the characters comes from the fact that my favorites are rarely in it. Doctor Irie, Akasaka, and Tomitake are all very minor characters, except Akasaka actually has his own arc. I would mention Ooishi, but he is in it enough that I don't have to complain.

I know there are people who say "It's an adaptation of the original, it sucks!" But to look at it as an adaptation and not the anime itself isn't really fair.

I'd say that Higurashi is by far the best anime in my opinion. I've never been a big fan of the horror/mystery genre, but Higurashi has gotten me quite into it. Yet, as deep into the horror and mystery genre it is, it still manages to be incredibly funny at moments. Whether or not you like these genres, it deserves at least a chance, as does everything else.
