Bakemonogatari

The reason I started to compare Bakemonogatari and Natsume Yuujinchou actually is that the male main characters are both voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi. Then I started to notice that the themes and the atmosphere is quite similar. And even if the animation is different they share high production values. These shows are about high-school boys who get mixed up with supernatural creatures and phenomenon. The main characters take notice of things that normal humans cannot see and try to help out, even if it is dangerous. The arcs of the different stories are not very long but characters frequently show up again. There is an unique mixture of peacefull daily life and violent supernatural occurences. Bakemonogatari has more graphic violence, Natsume on the other hand always tells touching stories...

Higepiyo

Cute comedy shows with animals as the main characters. The animals can talk (but Chi does not talk with the humans) and have funny adventures. The families who keep the pets are very similar too - mother, father and a son. Higepiyo may be bit more for older kids, while Chi can be enjoyed regardless of age.

Palme no Ki

The most striking similarity of Metropolis and A Tree of Palm is that they both feature characters who are not human but similar. They are "Pinocchio" type stories with a futuristic backdrop. Plus, the main characters are quite young, the plot containing tragedy and a touch of romance in both movies.

these series have a girl who changes magically for the sake of the boy she is in love with. but in contrast to other similar anime revolving around this theme Tutu & Fullmoon have really wonderful stories & unforgetable characters. at the beginning there is comedy and romance, later drama. plus the music is a focus point (Fullmoon=singing; Tutu=dancing to classic). in short: watch 'em both.

animation. then, the plot about a girl waiting until the guy gets his wits together and finally decides to save her/not save her. There is no fantasy in Kimi ga Nozomu and the urge to slap the main protagonist is 100x higher. But if you like drama-slice-of-life stories that make you cry then you will like to watch both. Watch Air even if you don't particulary like that genre cause it's worth it. (ok, so i am biased...^^)

Saiunkoku Monogatari
|
Novel-based fantasy anime with a girl as the main protagonist. Saiunkoku without the traveling to another world aspect and with more comedy. The worlds of Saiunkoku and Juuni Kokki are very complex with their own history etc. Characters and their relations to each other are more deep then it seems at first glance. Plus the plot centers around how to rule a country and responsibility coming with this. not to forget the historic costumes...just watch them both...

slashable bishies~ boy commands a supernatural creature everyone else is afraid of. Kantarou and Masahiro both fight evil spirits and demons with Onmyoudo (a sort of buddhistic-mystic art to tell fortune, cast spells and terminate evil spirits). Shounen Onmyouji plays during the Heian Era and Tactics during the Meji Era = historical Japan with people wearing yukata etc.

Dark atmosphere, a girl that is "special" fighting against her own kind...hunting her own kind. The dark, silent male as a love interest and a mysterious past. Drama, blood, people dying. Story goes deeper than at first looks, and furher in history...this especially for Blood+

NHK ni Youkoso!

shows about being an otaku...experiences, people you meet and the trouble being part of a subculture or fitting in the "normal" world...NHK goes even further...the main protag is a NEET and not only a plain otaku. Genshiken is much more light-hearted opposed to the often very dark sarcastic humor of NHK.

Ok, first the art of Nana and ParaKiss is very similar. Second, the plots revolve around people in showbiz (fashion - music). Third, love, sex and making one's way in life are told in a mature way...means more realistic, minus the teen angst...plus drama.

well, both are based on Shounen Jump Manga series. it\'s the switching between random comedy and some action based plot without difficulty that somehow gives these shows a similar feel. Also, a main chast of charas are introduced and make (random) apperances now and then...overall randomness level is higher in Gintama though.

Kamichama Karin

Kamichama Karin features kids with the power of gods, Gakuen Alice features kids with special magic powers. Lots of things happen while they are at school. And well, Karin and Mikan (main protagonists respectivly^^) look alike and their characters are quite similar too. Same goes for other characters! Humor is quite alike, and of course the kawaii-ness factor is very, very high in both shows....means frequently appearing animals and various frilly costumes for the girls, cute/cool outfits for the boys.

Settings of these shows are quite diffenent, Bokurano with its sf-mecha elements and NTHT\'s harsh fantasy world. Both series show the more evil twisted side of human nature. And the most important point: the main protagonists are all kids. These kids have to deal with the \"adult\" situations and the consequences of their actions in a cruel world.
