Kaibutsu Oujo (Anime) add
If anything good came from me watching the 26 episodes of Princess Resurrection, it’s only that I can write this review in good conscience in order to try and prevent other people from wasting their time. In all honesty, there isn’t really any good reason for anyone to spend their time on this show, so don’t! However, I don’t make such statements without reason, so if you’d like to know why I feel that way, continue reading.

Story: There’s a story here, but you’d barely know that. Our main character Hiro is killed 5 minutes into the show when some steel beams ...

You can make the argument that action anime are the guilty pleasures of the medium, as they don’t often have the complexity and depth of the other genres, they are usually faster paced and quite enjoyable. Shakugan no Shana is a perfect example of this, and I tend to liken it to an incredible chocolate sundae: It may not have a lot of nutritional value, but it’s delicious and you eagerly devour every bite, and find yourself wanting more once it’s all said and done.

Story: Shakugan no Shana revolves around the story of two characters and their fight against evil. Shana is a ...

Kurau was one of those anime I went into with certain expectations, thinking that it’d be a more action based anime, based off some artwork and what I’d heard. Instead, I got a deeper show that didn’t focus on the actions as much, but was even more enjoyable than I had anticipated.

Story: Kurau takes place a couple of hundred years in the future, where multiple world wars and uprisings have given birth to a single power, the GPO, who provides security for the earth and the colony on the moon. Beyond that, Agents are often used for jobs that may fall outside ...

Kanon (2006) (Anime) add
In the world of music, a canon is contrapuntal composition that employs a melody with one or more imitations of the melody played after a given duration. In the anime Kanon, which uses this term as a sort of foundation for what they create, they use Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D a number of times to highlight what the term means, and it’s a musical piece that is ultimately as enjoyable as the anime that draws its name from the term.

Story: I won’t go into the story of Kanon too deeply, but it’s basically about a young man, Yuichi, who moves in to live ...

Higurashi was one of those rare anime that came out of left field and completely floored me early. It’s a bizarre and twisted little anime that most closely resembles a nasty car accident, the type that you feel guilty about as you look hard when you pass by, but at the same time, you’re undeniably drawn to the wreckage by morbid curiosity.

Story: The basic story of Higurashi is actually broken down into arcs, as the anime is based on a murder mystery PC game. Thus each arc usually lasts about 3-6 episodes in length before it moves to the next arc, and to ...

With any entry into the solid franchise that is “Ghost in the Shell” each new product is compared to all of those that have come before it. Thus, with Solid State Society, this movie has to be compared not only to the shows that came before it, but the two movies as well. Every entry into this franchise has to continue to try and meet the bar set by those earlier entries, and I think that in this case, Solid State Society just falls a bit short of that bar.

Story – 7/10: The story for Solid State Society starts off some two ...

Fans of the original Full Metal Panic will find more of exactly what they loved about the first season with Full Metal Panic the 2nd Raid. The show really doesn’t deviate from what made the first season a success, and even manages to build onto that a bit.

Story: I won’t go into the specifics of the story, but the second season seems to focus less on the dangers to Chidori and instead focuses more on Sousuke’s life as a soldier as well as some new enemies he will have to face. As with the first series, I’ve always thought that FMP is ...

It’s hard for me not to lavish praise upon the altar that is Ghost in the Shell, as I’ve always found the entire franchise to be among the pillars of great anime science fiction. Each movie and show has delved deep into psychology, spirituality and even to some degree religion. The question is how would Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG stand up to the incredible first season and movies. The answer is: it continued to raise that bar of excellence in this franchise.

Story: I don’t want to go into too much detail about the story of 2nd ...

Can something be better than the sum of its parts?

That’s the question that I had to ask myself as I finished watching Sousei no Aquarion, because at its core, this is a show that is fundamentally flawed in a number of areas, but at the same time, I found myself enjoying it throughout. Thus I have to wonder if it’s a good show, even if I don’t think the individual parts are good.

The story of Aquarion isn’t that much different from most of the other giant robot shows you may have seen over the years. Humans are being harvested by a race of ...

Finishing Seirei no Moribito, or Guardian of the Sacred Spirit is much like finishing a good book that you just couldn’t put down. Once the journey is over, you realize how good the trip was and both enjoy what you watched, and feel sad that it’s finally over.

The characters are the real draw of this particular show. The main character Balsa is quite possibly the quintessentially perfect heroine. The beautiful, middle aged spear wielder comes across as powerful and skilled right off the bat. By the time the final episode comes to a close, Balsa has proven that she’s more than ...
