Finding a good comedy anime that actually makes you laugh is REALLY hard.
Almost always you find those weird annoying tropes, or really annoyingly stupid characters. These comedy anime will play off the most mediocre joke as the funniest thing in the entire world, then milk the same joke for all of eternity. It’s like the producers expect their audience to see overly violent characters smack people for no reason and then roll over laughing.
Which, now that I think about it, is probably why a lot of people view anime as cringe, hard to watch, and something that
...
makes the eyes bleed. Which yes, is how I would describe those comedy anime; but the truth is, that is a very small percentage of anime as a whole. The comedy genre is the main genre with these kinds of anime that have painfully awful jokes, with very few of them to be found in other genres. But even in comedy anime there are some gems hidden in all of the dirt.
I give to you: "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K." Which is in my opinion, the best comedy anime.
The thing that really makes “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.” so entertaining is the fact that the show makes fun of other comedy anime. It does this by taking what makes them so painful to watch, and making it funny by exaggerating it to the point where it’s obviously a joke. For example, having really dumb characters. More specifically, having all the characters be dumb (except for Saiki).
The way this anime plays off jokes is just amazing. It doesn't exaggerate jokes, or stretch them out. A joke happens and then it's over. One after another. Bam. Bam. Bam. Before you know it, you're breaking out in giggles.
It really is surprisingly entertaining to watch some psychic kid try to avoid people and hide his powers, rather than flaunting them and using them to take out big bad super villains.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. really reflects how I think most people categorize students. Especially high school students. We have the stuck-up popular kids, the rich kids, the big, strong, dumb kids, the super athletic and motivational kids, the trendy-fortune-spiritual kid, the creepy ghost kid, the quiet kid, the talkative, annoying kid, the kid who thinks they’re the main character, you get the point.
The show actively makes fun of this, by putting it to the very extreme. It doesn’t make a huge point on how this is all wrong, but it doesn’t really say it’s right, either. In fact, it doesn’t specifically talk about it at all. Some may see this as an issue, but I think it’s fine. Not everything has to be super philosophical and answer the biggest questions of life. In fact, it’s nice that this show never gets too deep. It makes it a perfect little escape from reality.
I’ve rewatched this anime so many times, I can’t even count them.
In the end, Saiki K. is a fun little escape from reality full of extreme stereotypes and jokes. No deeper meaning, or philosophical understanding required, it’s just something you can sit back and enjoy without stress or anything like that.
Story- 10/10
This anime doesn't really have a massive plot. That, my friend, is because it's a comedy. I gave it a 10 because it's hilarious. Just as any comedy anime should be.
Art- 8/10
It's pretty good. Not outstanding or amazing. It's definitely not bad, don't get me wrong, but it's no Violet Evergarden.
Sound- 9/10
Solely for Kaidou's little theme.
I also liked the voice acting, in both the dub and sub.
Character- 10/10
Probably the best aspect of the whole show.
Enjoyment- 10/10

Overall- 10/10
tl;dr-
Funny anime, go watch it.
