I am enjoying this story and probably is the dark horse in this season.
I usually write reviews for series that I have completed but some of the reviews are either super harsh, do not get the story, or have the most impossible of expectations for an adaptation.
I have not read the manga so this is just my view on the series.
This series is based on the War of the roses, a war on England, which has many written stories about it like William Shakespeare. The manga is based on the work Shakespeare. So this is an adaptation based on a manga, based on the
...
story, that is based on history retellings, that is based on a war that happened in real life.
Now to get to the mean and potatoes.....THIS IS GOOD! JUST WATCH IT!
What ...you want actual details!? Ok.
From the bat on let's talk about what many find bad about it, the animation, and the way the story is told. I find it fascinating. The way is told is a very theatrical atmosphere. It suits it since this is a story based on Shakespeare, who is a playwright. It makes it very unique and it helps its foreshadow and theme elements.
The music is very good too. I will not say the greatest but it does suit the series very well. The ending and opening are quite a great fit.
The story overall has a fast yet smooth transition. Each character fits their theme very well, and little by little each episode manages to eclipse the last.
This is a story about war, revenge, mental health (not in a good way to be treated), and acceptance.
I will say this.....I do not want to spoil but....for those who have read William Shakespeares' stories....they are mostly tragedies. I have not completed this story yet but it has all the themes elements foreshadows and habits of a tragedy...I hope not because I have come to like Richard and want for him to have a happy ending.....
If you want a revenge story with war with very well-developed characters and a plot that does not take 3 to 4 seasons to get very slow plot points with a very different way to present a story in anime, this is your story.

This comes form a LN adaptation that I am currently reading, and its quite outstanding. I really enjoy the adaptation, but before that lets talk about why many review so badly (They went a bit too hardcore on this one, even when there are many that have far worst adaptations)
-A lot of people hate CGI. There will be CGI monsters in here. It did not bother me at all, but some people really gets in their nerves if they see it.
-Its a bit weird....they complain the fights are too fast and then complain when they are too long?
-The best actual point that I can
...
agree on, is that is rushed! Season 1 could have been 2 seasons. They rushed quite a bit. Of course if you have not read the LNs there will be only two instances that you will be thinking is rushed. One of them which is rushed really fast is the rabbit tribe arc, which such arc is displayed in one episode, that is the only episode I felt disastified because you needed the LN to know what is happening. The other is the very beginning. The first episode is the best and also the worst episode at the same time, if you see it you will know why afterwards.
Now lets talk about the good....I enjoy the heck out of this!
-Likeable MC, check
-MC that becomes OP, but you can see how he struggles to become so OP! It was not just " boom! Op character!". This MC work hard for it, and its not like he just one shots last bosses.
-Its a harem but there is a main love interest! And a likable main heroine at that!
-I just love underdog stories that have so many obstacles but they climb through them.....through a lot of effort and painful paths.
I really like the opening and the ending songs. The animation is good, not great. Fights can be average or really cool. And over all I will go and watch the second season that has been greenlit and well.....it was so awesome it made me bought the LN!

This is really bias review since I love Guilty Crown. I realized it may not be a 10 for others but for me is just so incredibly great.
The story is already started a long time ago but we get ourselves in seeing Shu, regular high school kid. Or more like Shu, a kid that already went through character development/regression. Shu is one of the characters which development is never stopping on one direction for the situations he will face to encounter them in not the best way or give him enough time to finally breath. He will go through many phases, until he reaches
...
the phase of "guilty crown", and I am not talking of his power but the final phase of his character, and as the title suggest not the most happy appealing thing to have but yet so rightly so for him.
The show starts very mainstream, average guy meets girl, becomes hero for her, decides to fight for everyone. Unfortunately the story has other plans for Shu since he is gonna go through many, many obstacles, in which in some he will overcome with the power of friendship....and some....well....tough life kid.
At beginning this story will seem like already stated super mainstream. In fact it will seem like any shounen anime at first. The character development at first is slow and semi good but it as it reaches a certain point in the story is like it decides to finally go all out and show us incredible character development with great character interaction. The story likes to imply that humans are imperfect and so we make a lot of mistakes but even so we must push forward.
Music is great and so is art, some very good fighting scenes. If you are not fun of mecha, do no worry there is not a lot of them and they are not the story's main focus. if you are, well I won't tell you this is not your story but at the same time you will be quite unsatisfied by the lack of mecha. The second opening is one of my favorite openings of all time, also starts at the second half where the story get real good. The first half is obviously background and introduction, which is worth it, give the amazingness of the second half.
This story has to deal with the heart, with the things we hide and coward away to not accept. Also as already stated multiple times, Shu is just the best thing in this series, in the beginning he may not seem so, but how he is developed is the best thing in the series. It really shows the struggles and the fear but also the effort and maturity of an individual.

This story is about tragedy, friendship overcoming tragedy through love and tragedy, and revenge. Oh! Specially to remind you what happens when you cock-block someone. The character development is amazing and very strong and so is the plot. It has a bunch of mysteries that all get revealed, and through the story there are two full circles that are nicely done through characterization. What do I mean by that? Well by the end of the series you will get why.
This is a story heavily involving puppets and circuses and alchemy. What Puppets, revenge, circuses, alchemy and forms of immortality or reincarnation do not interest
...
you? Then, this is not for you.
The music is great and so is the art and the fights are very good. If you have seen Ushio to Tora, then you would most likely like this one too, since well...its the same author. By the same logic, after you see this series and will like to watch something somewhat similar but not really similar then watch Ushio to Tora ( the newer adaptation). Both of them are after very old mangas which both happen to have very good adaptations.
The only reason I do not give it a 10 is because arc 2, is super duper rushed, so very rushed a lot of people drop it before finishing this series. I love stories where plot is heavily important, characters are connected not just because but because of strong writing. This series embodies that, but get ready because there are so many mysteries, you won't believe there is still more. If you still cannot decide see the first opening of the anime.

I'm going to keep it short. This is a story with a lot of dialogue but also suspenseful moments because it is a lot planing vs planning showdown moments. Its about a story about a city with super powers with powers been very balance and instead of concentrating on power like fire and so, they focus on powers where you have to use tactics to use. A story about a government supervising these powers and how it might be obsolete, a story of righteousness, cruelty and selfishness....and time travel.
The story its very solid. The characters, the foreshadow, the plot and the MC are very solid. The
...
MC is very decisive and takes action. This story has a lot of shred of mystery where everything will be explained in the end. Music, openings and ending are very great too.
There will be some people that will be turn off the series in the beginning for two main reasons. One this story, although not very heavy dialogue oriented, it will concentrate on this (which in my opinion they did incredibly great on), and many people like a lot of movement and action happening. Second a lot of the characters do not react like your usual anime characters, they are bit stoic. Although they do express their feelings compare to many other series, they might appear dull. I like the way the characters express themselves in this story for three reasons. First, when they finally react to their feelings exaggeratedly (compare to their usual mood) it elevates the scenes even more. Second the way the story is, and the plot, it is understandable, it will feel off if they will act like usual anime characters. Third, the way they express themselves is unique and refreshing, specially if you have seen a lot of anime.
If you are interested in good plot, solid characters, decisive main character, time travel story, strategy vs strategy showdown, and great solid development and interaction between characters, this is your series.

This is my first review, so I apologize in advance if I did not did a great job. This anime has many different rating from 2 to 10, all over the place. The main reason was because of expectations, but if you asked whether I enjoy it or not I enjoy it greatly. It was adapted for a Visual Novel, if you asked whether you should play the Visual Novel, I should say yes, since it is way better but that does not mean it was a bad adaptation, in the contrary it was well done.
The series its about delusions and reality. With that concept
...
there is this horror and psychological esque scenarios. The MC is a shy semi shut in, that does not have much interest with the third dimensional world. He somehow gets involve with a crime, that would make him stress over his life and peaceful life. There will be some truths and lies, that the MC will be stressing over as he gets involve in such crime, and the audience will enjoy as they learn what is real and what is not, as our delusional MC learns the truth.
I'll cut to the chase the people that rated as very bad might have three reasons of why.
First reason, the MC, many might have wanted a different character, a more brave and badass charater, but if that was the case the series would had been just plainly bad, and be more generic. The MC makes the series feel confusing, psychological, with a bit of horror and suspense, because of him, it makes stand out. But a lot of people wanted a MC that you want to relate to and admire. But if all stories would be that way, with the same class of character, they would just be carbon copy of each other. There is a harem tag on here but this series won't be your casual harem series you are expecting if you want to watch the usual ecchi+harem (I am not bashing the genre, I love those series too, but I like that is not concentrated this time on that).
Second reason, the ending. The ending might not be as great as many people would have like it. For me it was well done, but maybe a bit better in the polishing of its execution would have been better. The first 10 episodes are incredibly well done, the ending is not bad but not excellent either.
The third reason some people expected a bit more battle esque scenes, this series has some action, but its not the reason why you see it in the first place. I have read some comments about the episodes and it seems at times they had wanted a random power up for the MC to show some cool fighting scenes. For battle action lovers, although there are fights this is not an battle action series.
How to tell whether you might enjoy the series? Watch the first two episodes and you shall see whether you like it or not. I was hooked by the first episode. If the suspense of the story does not get you by the second episode, it might not be your cup of tea. This story greatness relies on the suspense and keeping the audience in the dark, while they make several theories of what is happening until the reveal what is going on. What is a delusion, a lie or reality? What is the truth? They do a great job of it. Again not a love-com harem series, or battle action series. It is a story of suspense while you keep theorizing of what is happening. A good series if you have watched too much of the so called "generic anime" for a while.
