I've heard! I actually know about the Alicization arc and my friend really hyped it up for me. I might finish SAO 2 before it airs just to get the context in time for it, since it seems to be extremely popular. I'm also looking forward to the SAO progressive adaptation, if ever, because that's how I hoped the story would play out. Here's hoping it is slightly more mature than the original series, because Aincrad wasn't bad, but if you make it slightly more seinen with a few darker tones in there as opposed to deus ex machina, it really could become something great.
I think the strength of SAO's setting is the survival game. The video game setting adds nuance, but the main point of SAO is "they are fighting for their goddamn lives". Adding tension and psychological thriller elements to that makes for a superbly entertaining piece of media, so while I have not read progressive or Alicitization, hearing stuff about the quality of writing hypes me up.
That's what differing opinions are for. I change my opinion if I can't back it up properly, since that means I cannot disagree with whoever I'm arguing with. In the case of SAO, it's more of a disappointment sort of feeling since I really enjoyed the Aincrad arc despite its flaws. ALO was just a complete mess, and GGO started well but lost track of its side plots. The main reason I dropped the show was the Caliber arc. It just so...childish, to say the least. It honestly feels like filler material since it has no character development and simply takes up space within the season. Just more of Kirito and his harem blasting baddies. Admittedly, I have not seen mother's rosario, so if you can convince me to watch that without spoiling anything, I'll be glad to take another look at it.
As for Death Gun, I thought his motivations at first were fine, but that infamous ending to the arc made me lose all respect for him as an antagonist. I understand that they were trying to paint him as that irredeemable psychopath you were describing, but the way the writers went about it flopped hard. It wasn't menacing, it was comical and cringy since everyone would know the result of the arc anyways at that point.
Claiming that psychopaths don't act like he does was a mistake. He does, infact, act like a psychopath because he is a psychopath. The main issue is that they painted him as a comical failure instead of a badass or terrifying freak.
In short, SAO II didn't necessarily fail, but it sure as hell did not succeed.
Sure, here's a bunch.
1. Boring Gary Stu protagonist. He beats everyone just because he's Kirito and that's the only reason. It's a bit better than the first season since he actually gets reasons as to why he's doing well, but if he can do it so can other characters. His PTSD development was interesting for an episode but then quickly forgotten.
2. The fanservice. Why do we need 5 shots of Sinon's ass every fucking episode.
3. Caliber arc. The whole thing is a callback to the 2nd half of SAO I and that's a very, very bad thing. The arc is cheesy and just generally cringeworthy.
4. The antagonist is a tool. Very cartoonish and unrealistic. Seriously, not even psychopaths act the way he does.
5. Yui. The whole "Papa" and "Mama" thing is beyond cringeworthy and seems to just be shoehorned into the dialogue to make the relationship between Kirito and Asuna "deep". There are plenty of more effective ways to make romance profound but an annoying AI who repeats the same 5 words on a loop is not the way to go.
Here's hoping this explained my thoughts a bit.
