Goblin Slayer, the anime that everyone either loves the hell out of it or just plain hates it. I didn't after the fiasco that Darling in the Franxx caused in 2018, there was any anime would come out this year that would have everyone in the community talk about it. Well Goblin Slayer has manages to done that. Now is it the best thing to come out of the fantasy/MMORPG genre or plain worst anime in the history. If anyone asked me, i would describe the Goblin Slayer anime after five episodes in one word: AVERAGE. Yes, it's just an average show
...
which just has a bit more edge over most shows of the same genre. Now let's break down the Goblin Slayer anime.
Story: 6/10
There is an old saying that you can not judge a book by its cover. Well Goblin Slayer disagrees with that. It is what is on the tin. An anime about slaying Goblins. In this anime Goblins are not your absolute weak tier10 monsters. They are evil and a bit smart( not to mention too horny) and the anime is about dealing with them. While simple stories can be great with good execution, Goblin Slayer till now has handled it averagely not making the story stand out. Five episodes in, the world building hasnt been upto the mark or the execution hasnt been spot on. However this could have been worse.
Art: 8/10
This is the strongest point of the Goblin Slayer anime. While the art isn't something revolutionary, it is on point. The color contrasts are on point with the tones of the show and animation never seems half-hearted. Considering the year 2018, the art of the show is upto the mark. White Fox haven't half-assed the project just because this was something untested.
Sound: 7/10
Not much to say about the sound of the show. Okay OST, decent OP, not so decent ED. Considering it was produced by White Fox, I expected a bit more on the sound department as well.
Character: 5/10
This is where the show has a huge flaw. If you are making a good anime, you should be invested in the characters by episode 4-5. But five episodes in, there is nothing that would make you root for or feel a connection with any of the characters. Before you go and say read the manga/LN or wait a bit, Good anime always make sure you have some investment in the show important characters. All the characters in the show are one note. Character interactions seem forced. The characters are making the show suffer.
Enjoyment: 5/10
Despite of heavily criticizing Goblin Slayer, i would say this. I did enjoy it quite a bit. It isn't something extraordinary. But if you have free time, you can give the show a go.
Overall: 7/10
Now before giving an overall rating and review of the show lets discuss a few things first. First comes the infamous rape scene. Is it the worst thing to happen in anime? Well, no. There have been far worse execution of rape scenes in anime I can think of(every other edgelord anime). Goblin Slayer, however is not one to be up there among those. Hell, even Berserk despite of being so good, didnt do an excellent job at that. So just dissing the anime on basis of the rape scene only isn't right. Goblin Slayer used simple shock factor to draw in an audience successfully. But is it really that good? The answer here will also be no. Shows like Re:Zero and Made in Abyss have shown you dont need to rely solely on shock factor to establish a brutal fantasy world. Sadly, without its shock factor, Goblin Slayer cannot establish its brutality. Overall, it is just an average show that only a teenager would think that its the best or worst thing to happen in anime.
