Bakuretsu Tenshi: Infinity (Anime) add

Burst Angel is one of my favourite animes, and this short but sweet OVA is defiantly a brilliant addition to its franchise.

Acting as a prequel to the original series (and a sequel to Episode 14) is a fun story full of action, a bit of mystery and a few laughs along the way. It can be a little rushed given that it’s only around 25 mutinies long and it doesn’t really add anything to actually series itself so fans of the series won’t miss anything big if they do skip this.

Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase (Anime) add

Being a fan of vampires and the gothic all my life I had to check this anime out when I heard about it, and while it is far from a classic, it’s an enjoyable romp of an adventure for sure.

Moon Phase is at its heart an adventure/romance/comedic anime and it mostly works very well in all its fields and while the series may look light and fluffy on its surface (And most of the time it is quite light) it holds some dark settings and events which will surprise you.

The central story is engaging enough and develops well at the start, yet as it progresses ... it starts to feel a little hollow, especially near the end of the series when things speed up in pace but lose a lot of substance and things go haywire in terms of plot. In addition to that, the story feels far too stretched for a 25 episode series and even by then there is a lot left in the plot that needs to be solved which I found frustrating!

Despite these drawbacks fans of the gothic and vampires stories will find a lot to enjoy, I was surprised at how deep they made the shows mythology, even thinking up a brilliant way of how Vampires can deal with the sun which I have yet to seen in any other vampire lore. The show also dose well at showing an interesting and engaging love story develop between the main leads.

The cast of characters is great with quite a bit of verity. Hazuki makes for an entertaining lead and it’s good that we see her grow from this annoying spoilt little brat in the first few episodes to something more by the end. Kouhei is your average male lead and is average at best during the series run, but he gets some surprisingly big developments near the final stages of the anime which helps add a little more to his character.

The supporting cast is fine too but most have little development apart from the brilliant Elfriede who is given a surprisingly dark background and a sweet relationship with Kouhei’s grandfather Ryuuhei. The villains are a particularly joy to watch and they nicely range from the vile, if slightly camp, Count Kinkel to the innocent looking but deadly Artemis.

The animation is mostly very good, with some stunning scenes of beautiful gothic imagery and countryside landscapes but it fails a little in the city scenes which can be quite bland and feel limp compared to the beauty of the rest. The main characters are well animated but the crowd scenes annoyed me (They are just paper stick figures!) and it would have been nice to see more verity in the various monsters that appear as they seem quite plain and not well thought out. The fights scenes are normally fun to watch but can also be a little bland and unengaging as time comes by.

I have only watched the series of the Dub so far but they do a good job with a nice cast but it’s nothing very special. The incidental music throughout the series is very nice and atmospheric. The opening team itself is very jolly and fits Hazuki’s personality perfectly while the ending song is very moving and has a far more gothic feel to it which I like.

All and all, if you want something a little bit different, a little bit gothic and a little bit mad then this is a good choice. Tsukuyomi -MOON PHASE- is a fun if sometimes empty anime but one which deserves a watch and another series (Even if it’s just to sort out the lose ends!)

Bakuretsu Tenshi (Anime) add

When I first heard of Bakuretsu Tenshi I believed it to be a similar anime to a personal favorite anime of mine, Black Lagoon, and us such I had high expectations. In the end Burst Angel turned out to be a totally different show then I had first though it would be, yet in quite a good way…

The series is normally split in to story arcs made of two or more episodes (There is the odd one of episode) and they normally have a common theme or item that connects the story in the final few episodes. The main story itself and the arcs are ... fun and interesting enough, they range impressible from blood hungry monster plots to the quite bizarre samurai and cyberspace roaming that you would not expect to find in this type of anime and while it normally works well the plot sometimes try’s to be a bit deeper and darker then it can actually manage (And the main idea of a Tokyo with guns gives it the right to at least try) In the end it works much better as a fun, over the top series.

Burst Angel is mostly a Sci-fi/Action series and as you would expect each story includes some fun mech or gunslinger battles which while mostly impressive, sometimes do end up feeling a little bit tedious after a while (Must point out however that this is the first mech series I have really watched all the way through)

The characters are a big highlight of the series and while they may be a little stereotyped in there ways (Loud kid, well endowed leader, quite gunslinger, the one who always gets kidnapped) but each are given there own quirks that help define them more as the series goes on and end up giving the story a good dose of needed emotion as the series concludes

The most fascinating character was Jo, whose striking crimson appearance just screams how cool she is. She’s a bit of a typical ‘gunslinger with a mysterious past’ at first, and it takes a bit of time for her to develop, but when we do learn more of her past and her relationship with Meg it’s worth the wait.

Meg is basically there to get caught or kidnapped in each episode, which at first gives her character a light weight, stereotypical feel. But as the series develops we get to see more of her relationship with Jo and find that there is a little more to her character then you at first think.

Kyohei is one of the few male characters and when he appeared in the first episode, I started fearing that this anime would become a typical Harem, yet by the end of the series I was surprised at how underused he actually was! In the end his job is to basically introduce us the viewers to the plot and characters of the show and do little else. After the first few stories his appearances become more and more sparse and by the time we know the main characters and there back stories he is more or less ignored at the end.

The supporting cast is great too, though I think Sei had more potential then she was given and the addition of Leo felt a bit too random, he adds little in the end other then being another guy.

Watching this in Sub I found the cast to be great if nothing to special and the music really matches the energetic and fun feel of the show. I have yet to hear the Dub but the cast sounds good enough for me.

The animation is very impressive, the characters are well designed and have there own cool looks and colors. The Mechs could have been better designed I think, with a little but more originality and flare but animation wise they usually deliver the goods and the CGI doesn’t feel out of place with the rest of the animation ether.

Overall this turned out to be a brilliant and fun anime, just don’t expect anything as deep or as dark as Black Lagoon despite the gunslinger similarities.
