Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation (Anime) add

Mixed Feelings

Average. That's probably the best word I can use to describe this anime.

Painfully, mind-blowingly average.

My main problem with this show is probably the pacing. This may be just a personal nit-pick, but when watching Danganronpa it's incredibly jarring to go from trial to trial every episode with little character moments in between. I cannot describe to you the emotional whiplash I felt while sitting through a trial with characters I don't care about discussing a murder that I barely understand, maybe because I'm the biggest idiot ever or MAYBE because the investigation period lasts all of 2 seconds and I have no time to ... think for myself. The show doesn't give me any time to care about the characters, like I know this is a death game and all but COME ON. During the big reveal in trial 2, the most I could do was gasp and say "oh" because I felt like this should be a big surprise, but I barely knew any of these characters so it didn't feel as impactful as it should have been.

After watching this anime I found it average and uninteresting, so I put it in the back of my mind for a month or two. But during quarantine, I became re-interested in the franchise and decided to give it another shot. After playing the whole of Trigger Happy Havoc, I was honestly SHOCKED on how different it was from the anime. The key plot points were still the same (eg: character backstories, key moments of development) but the amount of new content that the anime skipped over made it feel completely different. I can't really blame them though, there's only so much of a 20-something hour game you can cram into 13 episodes. But the moments of character dialogue, the free time events, and the investigation period present in the game all make the anime look inferior.

One of the biggest (and possibly my favourite) aspects of the danganronpa games is how they get you to interact & learn more about the characters through free time events. This optional game mechanic lets the player speak to any character in their downtime, and gives you insight into their backstory, giving them tons more characterization. The anime (for obvious reasons) does not have this feature, which is a huge problem for me. Danganronpa's characters is one of its biggest strengths, so taking away the ability to learn more about them takes away all the fun, and weakens the characters. I'm not saying that completing free-time events are crucial to enjoying Danganronpa, but it is a huge part of how I view its characters.

I'll try to keep this short since I've already touched on it, but the cutting out of character interactions is a huge problem for me in the anime. One of the most frustrating moments of this is in a scene with Naegi and Maizono. Without getting into spoiler territory, Maizono says some things to him in a scene in the game that really helps the player to understand her character and the reasons for her later actions. This scene is completely omitted from the anime, which was so surprised when I played the game. That scene made me sympathize with Maizono a lot and made me see her more than the one-dimensional caricature I made for her in my mind. With it being removed from the anime, it kind of just weakens Maizono's character for me.

This is my last major point with the anime vs game, the investigation periods. What makes the investigations so enjoyable in Danganronpa is that YOU, the player is the one conducting them. Sure, you might be led by some characters to nudge you in the right direction, but overall you are the one in charge of finding clues. This is really interesting because it gives you time to THINK, to use your brain, and come to your own conclusions. This is completely ruined in the anime, where the investigation period consists of montages and the occasional line of dialogue to explain something. It's just not as engaging, and while this is a minor concern compared to the others, it still bugs me.

TL;DR- If you're just looking for a good time and a quick anime, then this is right up your alley. If you're looking for an engaging story and characters that you actually end up giving a shit about, maybe just play the game instead.

Okay, I finished this anime about 2 days ago and it's been living rent-free in my mind ever since. I'm only writing this review because this anime pisses me off so much, and it makes me mad whenever I think about it. I'm sorry if this sucks idgaf I just need to vent about this show.

Despite my low rating I actually DIDN'T hate everything about this anime. Some of the few things I did like were:

1) Minene Uryuu (the 9th diary user)

To be honest, I just think Minene is dope as hell. She's badass, speaks her ...
