This? This was popular?
My exposure to this show prior to watching it was that I had kind of heard it mentioned in passing one time; that's it. I otherwise entered completely blind with only the knowledge that it currently sits at #100 on the popularity charts. "Surely there must be reason", I thought to myself, but I was unprepared for how wrong I was.
Before my rambling, I would like to first make note of the animation: It's good. Wit Studio generally does not make "bad" animation, and with this being right off the heels of AOT, it's understandable that they would put their best foot
...
forward.
The first episode was good. Not a masterpiece by any means, but it presents a great setup as well as ending off with what would be a genuinely badass execution of a vampire. "Ok, I'm interested" I thought to myself for the first and only time, because the preceding episode takes us straight to high school drama.
Why? Why would you set up a scenario where all of humanity has been killed and immediately take the story to a normal-ass high school? Even according to the lore (only 90% have been killed), it's still unreasonable to assume that such a school can even exist. Furthermore, it does a poor job accomplishing its training arc goal, instead only deepening my aggravation with the mc (we'll get to it, don't worry).
The protagonist - my god, this is a textbook example of exactly how NOT to write characters. He is beyond annoying. I understand that characters should have flaws, especially those we wish to see grow into something greater, but Yuuichiro Hyakuya has only flaws, with not a single glimmer of hope to attach myself to. He's whiny, combative, refuses to listen to those around him at any point, and spends all twelve episodes with his head up his ass. When I must spend a whole season with a character, the least a writer could do is make something for me to like about him, but in this regard, Owari no Seraph fails miserably.
From episode 2 onward, Owari no Seraph never succeeds in reaching the heights of its first episode, but instead seems to sink only deeper & deeper. Cliches, boring characters, a generic plot filled with holes, & a horrendous mc weigh this show down to the point of my constant groaning & aggravation while watching it. It was truly a frustrating experience which I do not recommend.
