Nagi No Asukara is simply beautiful. This anime is extremely well done, from the extraordinary artwork to the magnificent plot. There is nothing more that can describe this piece of work except for the word: Perfect. This story exists because of curiosity. Curiosity is something humans don't understand. Why do we want to know? For Power? Knowledge? For fun? The artwork makes us want to see more, to watch this piece of work that was able to captivate many hearts. Nagi No Asukara is a piece of work that is on a completely different level than that of many others.
-Story-
Two different types of people.
...
People of the land and the People of the sea. From the ocean comes people with an ability to exist underwater, caused by Ena, a skin that they were born with, allowing them to live underwater. Originally, all people lived in the ocean. However, as curiosity developed, humans abandoned the ability to exist underwater, and left the ocean to live on land. Now, centuries after, two subspecies of humans live on the land and in the sea. And despite that they were once friends and families generations ago, the hatred between them as grown so much, causing them to live isolated from each others lives.
This story takes place in a town underwater called Shioshishio. The story of a boy named Hikari Sakishima and his three childhood friends. Unfortunately, their local middle school shut down, leaving them the only option of transferring schools. Since the only school close to them was above the surface, they had no choice but to transfer schools to there. As the story progresses, they meet a boy who is curious about the people of the sea and befriends Hikari and his three friends. Together, the five of them work together to change the hatred between the land and sea. As they do, they also strengthen their bonds of friendships and dares to change the relation between the people of the sea and the people of the land.
The story follows the mysterious and tragic consequence of the four friends that left the sea to join the people of the land. The plot revolves around a mysterious aspect, which is the ancient story of the Sea God and the development of Ena. There is also a love drama in Nagi No Asukara. This part of the story completely exceeded my expectations.
-Art-
Animation and artwork are extremely important in anime. It can change the mood, feeling, and enjoyment of the whole story. Good animation can really change the outcome of the anime. That being said, I must say, the artwork was literally beyond perfect. Few anime really succeeds to capture the beauty aspect of art. That includes Nagi No Asukara. It completely grasps onto the colors and figures, ultimately creating one of the anime with the best artwork. As someone who studied art for many years, I must say that I am extremely impressed with the artwork.
-Sound
The OP/ED themes went well with the anime, and I really enjoyed it a lot. It was nice to listen to, and it was a few of those OP/ED that I actually didn't skip throughout the show. Not to mention that the soundtrack was amazing too, though I expected more of a melancholy sound at times.
The voice acting did not disappoint. In fact, all the voice actors really did created a perfect voice to go with each of the characters. No one really stood out as one, but together, it definitely created a different atmosphere. That said, the voice acting definitely did the best anyone could possibly ask for.
-Character-
The personalities of the characters in this anime varies a lot. The main protagonist is the short-tempered Hikari Sakishima. Hikari Sakishima seems like on of those people who wouldn't get well with anybody, but deep inside, he is really caring and protective of all his friends. He appears to dislike anyone from above the surface, and would constantly ignore or name call them. However, as time passed he fit into the rest of the group perfectly fine. Then there was Manaka Mukaido, who would usually cry over trivial things, which caused Sakishima to constantly keep watch over her so nothing would get out of hand. Although she appears to love Tsumugu, she actually has feelings for Sakishima, but is afraid to admit it, thinking that if she did, the friendship between the four friends from underwater to be broken. Tsumugu Kihara was the calm and collected boy from above the surface. He also loved the sea, wishing that one day he would once again meet someone from the sea, and loved learning about the sea more than anyone else from above the surface. Later, he meets the four friends and befriends them. Chisaki Hiradaira is shown to also have feelings for Hikari, but like Manaka, she is also afraid to show it. As the beautiful and cheerful one among the five friends, she often smiles a lot and would try to cheer people up or stop fights among the friends. Sayu Hisanuma is the smart and sharp one among the group of friends. Like Chisaki, he is also shown smiling a lot, and is later on shown that he loves Chisaki. He also notices that Chisaki loves Hikari, but still goes ahead and confesses to her.
Nagi No Asukara is full of romance and love among the five friends. Even so, the love aspect in the show is awesome, and the characters are also well developed.
-Enjoyment-
I personally enjoyed it a lot. Rarely am I frustrated that there isn't an option to rate 11/10, and this is one of those times. This was also one of the anime that once I watched an episode, I couldn't stop watching until I finished the whole show. Each episode makes you curious. It makes you want to dig deeper, to know what's going to happen next. This anime also caught the supernatural aspect of it pretty well too. It is extremely interesting, and once you start watching it, you will most likely get hooked to the end.
-Overall-
The story is very also very interesting, and makes you curious and want to know more about what is going to happen next. Nagi No Asukara also really captures the beauty of art and animation. The soundtrack is amazing, and goes hand in hand with the animation. The characters are well developed, and makes you want to know more about them, and who they end up with. Watching this show will most likely make you glad you watched it, though I cannot guarantee this for everyone. Overall, this show is 100% worth watching.
Nagi No Asukara completely exceeded my expectations, and grasped onto the beauty of it all. This show is probably the best anime I watched yet. How should I describe it... Anime as good as this only appears once in a blue moon.
Nagi No Asukara truly touched my heart. It is one I truly will never forget.

I regret it.
I completely wasted 5 minutes to watch something that didn't even make sense. I'm not even sure what it was about. A film that was supposedly 8 seconds long that keeps looping. The artwork was not only terrible, but the music was also horrible too. To be honest, I'm not even sure exactly why I wasted my time on something like this, or why I watched something like this to the end. I would not recommend this to anyone unless they enjoy wasting time watching things that aren't even worth it, so unless you are someone like that, don't watch this. |
