Let me start with how bummed I am to have mixed feelings and a 5 star attached to this review.
This story is so strong with amazing character development almost all the way through. I couldn't put this manga down, reading Vols 1-7 in 1 sitting. You might noticed that I stopped right before the final volume. That is due to how preachy and frustrating Vol 7 was. I mean seriously it just felt so different from everything I had read up to that point. Then to rub salt in the wound there was Vol 8. It started off better then expected, but once again halfway
...
through just dropped the ball. It got super vague and the characters just felt like they were talking but not really saying anything that mattered, and then the real garbage of it all was the last two chapters. I've got to say that out of every manga I've read and anime I've watched that was by far the worst ending I've ever had the displeasure of seeing.
(Spoilers) As many others have said in these reviews it just completely erased the romantic development in a single text block. The two female protagonists had the worst of it with bs endings that made everything we learned about them seem pointless. Masumi ending up with a random dude after her whole turmoil with not feeling romantic feelings toward men, and Futaba also ending up with a random no-name that doesn't even get dialogue. Then, the worst of it was how the whole last volume talked about how Toma and Taichi were gonna be best friends always, and then they are presumed to be together out of nowhere. I don't necessarily have a problem with them being an item, but if they are gonna be together why did it have to be so vague! Like they didn't even show or give dialogue to Toma after the timeskip, and I barely recognized Taichi to connect that it was showing that they ended up together. Also, I think it was super lame that his buddy happened to get married on the same day as Futaba, so that Taichi didn't go and congratulate her.
I'm sorry to be so negative, but that ending just spat in the face of everything I liked about the manga. I honestly don't even know if I can recommend it. If you do read it I guess stop before any of the timeskip dialogue. I'm just gonna pretend them saying I love you into the ocean is where the story ends.
