Ubel Blatt is hard to make heads or tails of.
Now, the positives I will give it are as follows
#1) A very simple and compelling revenge based plot. Koinzell wants to kill the Seven Heroes because they're frauds who tried to kill him and steal the credit for his achievemtns
#2) An interesting implementation of magic. Flying machines, magic swords that derive their power from living fairies bound to them, and Tokyo Ghoul style body horror in the form of what seems to be dark powers.
#3) The right atmosphere for a very grim struggle
But, even as solid as the basic concept is - this anime's execution
...
SUCKS.
The first major issue is that it just spams information at you. There are tons of characters, tons of places, and some of those things just come out of nowhere without so much as a proper diversion to bring them up. Aht Kscharlundo is probably the most notable issue. If I have to go back and read the manga to feel as though I know what's going on - that's bad.
The second major issue is that it feels like an edgy shonen wannabe. It pretty much decided to cut erotic content and gore because the director "Wanted to focus more on Koinzell as a character". But that decision seems to have robbed the setting of the more mature atmosphere it almost feels like it's built for. While erotic content may not have much to do with the story itself, it helps the setting. You get an idea of how sleazy or evil a character can be through some of those scenes and gives the whole thing a more mature feeling.
But the biggest issue is the boring fights that this show features. Static animation, Koinzell bounces between being overpowered and insufficient as the plot needs him to be, and the effects are Failure Frame levels of bad at times.
So I want to like it, but there's almost nothing in this story to really get me interested in it. Characters feel pretty bland. Aht is the only character I give a fuck about: Koinzell and Peepi (what the hell kind of name is that btw?) are uncompelling. Action is boring. If I wanted to see a PNG I'd go watch Season 2 of Blue Lock. And I find myself struggling to keep tabs on all the loose ends this story throws at me between the abundance of overly-engineered German Names and the out-of-left-field style of storytelling.
The only thing I can think of is that I might just be gaslighting myself into this series....

In any season, there will inevitably be winners and losers….
And in winter 2025, one of those losers… happens to be called Momentary Lily.
Now, there are a few things wrong with this show, but let’s start off with a brief history. Studio GoHands put out some great looking promotional footage for this series that showed some high octane fighting that was pretty visually appealing. And at the time, I was skeptical of whether the series would have a good story or not.
And, as it turns out, I was right to be skeptical.
Firstly, the empty world lacks in areas where, say Tsutomu Nihei’s Blame does in
...
creating a vast empty world. Rather than Eerie and forlorn, the world of Momentary Lily just feels empty. Primarily because nothing seems to break down or age due to maintenance robots that run around and clean up after every one of their battles. Honestly, that fact alone made it all feel like the setting of the series was underdeveloped and terribly artificial - as if it’s not real whatsoever. And for fiction, that’s a terrible issue to have. I’ve honestly seen terribly written Isekai series with more interesting and believable worlds than what’s presented in this. Where as the emptiness of worlds like Blame and Heavenly Delusion lend to the apocalyptic “end of days atmosphere", the world of momentary lily only really makes it seem that much less thought through.
But, were that alone the issue, this series would still survive scrutiny. The bigger issue is the downright brain rot dialogue in this series that does nothing but make it feel like a hyperactive spaz fest full of flashing lights and explosive action. Now, a series that survives on fights and animation isn’t exactly new. This season there are two that I think have survived entirely on their action sequences - Solo Leveling and Sakamoto Days. The difference between those two series and this one is that they have their focus on a small number of characters with distinctive personalities built on a bit more than a single quirk and the writing is still serviceable enough to give the series just enough substance for enjoyment. Their characters have clear boundaries between each other and can be largely distinguished from each other in terms of personality whereas Momentary Lily’s cast feels as though they all blend together into one overly quirky ball of chaos that doesn’t help the show in any way. There's no humor to the interactions, and there's nothing terribly compelling about their characters.
They're almost all too spastic and eccentric for for their own good, sometimes spouting what effectively comes across as absolute gibberish in a conversation and making it hard to even comprehend what's going on. And don't get me started on their attitude towards the world at large. The fact that they were so relaxed about everything, living life as if nothing was actually wrong with the world helped neither the characterization of the cast, nor the building of the world. People being erased from the world is treated almost like a non-issue.
So this series was ultimately just a flashy but uncompelling little project. Part of it was interesting - the almost magical girl-esque concept behind it with our all female cast and their specialized weapons with different abilities. But that’s about where my interest stops. It’s certainly a unique attempt at something new, but not a good one. It lacks any compelling characterization, narrative hooks, or intrigue with the world to really keep attention past the first episode. So it genuinely disappoints.

It was genuinely just okay.
Visually, it's very good. It also does the Overlord political maneuvering and manipulation as well as the rest of the series. But it felt like it was too crammed into one long run to adequately cover the whole arc.
Major fights upon which the plot hinges are over in an instant when they should have lasted longer (It was supposed to be staged to make it look like a difficult match up for Ainz) and worse yet they happen far off in the distance so you don't even get to enjoy the action and animation together like a regular fight. It's just
...
a couple of colored streaks through the sky and some flashing lights for a minute or so and then a winner is declared.
But that's not even the biggest complaint. Half the new characters felt so under-cooked that it made it hard for me to care what was going on. The paladin lady - Remedios - was probably the worst. She was incredibly irritating, and had the potential for a whole mental breakdown arc over the events of the story that could have played out well.... if this were a full season of anime. Unfortunately, a lot of the supporting backstory needed for this is completely omitted. She has no reason for her position, her obsession, nor her drive and it all feels lackluster. Any really compelling moments she could have had throughout the story were either cut entirely or stunted by terrible decisions in directing.
Nea Baraha was a decently compelling character, but came off more like a fangirl with how fast she develops her respect for Ainz. Given more time, she too could have been a much better character. It wasn't like I hated her, but she suffered the same effect as Remedios because of the cramming - her writing felt robbed of potency.
And all that while the story crams what feels like a lengthy campaign into about 2 hours and 20 minutes, cutting corners in every way it can to reach a conclusion within that time frame, and awkwardly interrupting the story with the whole advertisement for rune technology in a way that wasn't funny or even super important to the plot.
Wait until you can watch it from home, get some alcohol, and enjoy. You'll have a better time than I did driving 40 minutes to the nearest showing at 9:30 on a Sunday night.

Metallic Rouge - a great concept, an excellent idea, but a very BAD delivery.
This series makes an attempt at being artsy and philosophical that just doesn't land because it's too rushed to get you effectively invested. On top of that, there are several episodes where it starts you off in an unfamiliar place and acts as if there was context to this change that was never shown. Characters aren't all that great, especially as things continue on and you realize that none of them ever really get any sort of significant development except for one - the police investigator.
It's sad, because in concept this
...
could have been a great anime. It had a solidly interesting world until it crammed too much into the series to swallow. It had a solid foundation for characters but generally failed to deliver any sort of endearing development on the vast majority of them. It has a story and a moral point but can't seem to stick a landing on any of it's 'profound' questions, making it a haphazard production that leaves you wanting.
I seriously felt stupid while watching this because I was failing to get the point of it all until it was directly stated later. but it turns out that this was entirely an issue with the way it was written and not with the way it was perceived. It paddles on a lot about freedom vs. order like it's some grand and philosophical thing, but because the writing is so haphazard it just starts to look like a mess.
And on a production side, it feels like it was passed around from studio to studio in order to be finished. I noticed no less than three changes in animation style, ranging from standard anime style, to highly emotive and overly expressive in one particularly strange scene the likes of which you would expect out of an OP or ED sequence, to the heavy usage of CGI during combat that didn't appear earlier in the series.
I wanted to like this series. Hell I thought it was decent for the first few episodes. However - it quickly became apparent that this was a patchwork project. Characters are thrown in for seemingly no reason other than they're needed, episodes start in strange places like content was cut from them, and the overall vibe in the middle of the series is that absolutely nothing makes sense about it.

How about I save you the trouble - this series feels like an anime Lord of the Rings Porn Parody without the sex.
I mean, with the villains being far to similar to Sauron and the ring wraiths I can't help but make that comparison - mostly because the idea of that amuses me more than the show itself.
The plot has a decent foundation but it's execution is mid to garbage - it feels like it's story is far too cramped.
Character development feels more forced than constipation, and they all end up seeming like jokes rather than serious characters. The MC acts like a stereotypical
...
virgin dude and blushes at just about everything. The girls feel like their personalities were an afterthought compared to their chest size (which given that this is an Ecchi series I could forgive if it would actually do some ecchi things). And the villains are so generic they lack any real feeling of intimidation or danger.
The animation is about what you would expect of a series that wants to focus on fan-service - largely middling and boring even in the most imprortant and high-stakes moments.
And the plot feels so contrived at times with it's reveals it was almost like it was written as cliff notes before the anime.
I can't really think of a reason to watch this other than the fact that you like to mock bad anime.
You can easily find better renditions of EVERYTHING this story has to offer - be it action, story, characters, premise, or just boobies.

As a fan of the light novel (and a bit of a stickler on odd details) I can say that this series is a good watch.
It's a slow paced, well built story that focuses a lot on the journey of the main character - Rentt Faina - as he figures out the whole undead thing. It still has a bit of a game-ish aspect to it with the idea of him killing monsters to make himself more powerful, but this, at least, is handled better than a good number of other series.
And without delving too deeply into spoilers, I think it presents it's big,
...
world spanning mystery pretty well. It establishes that there are a lot of unknowns, and that there's plenty to be explored in the world - which is a good thing for a series like this.
To make a lot of boring meandering and rambling on my part short, it's a solid fantasy anime that does a good job establishing and building it's world.
The one con I can mention is that the series can feel really slow at times. All it really means is that it doesn't have the highest highs, but focuses really intently on the main character.
Having finished the anime now, I wanted to add a few notes. there are several elements that are either cut for the sake of pacing, or taken out of order for the sake of character development. There are technically elements that shouldnt even be in this season because they're featured in other arcs. This gives me the unfortunate sense that they aren't likely to do a second season

The premise interests me, but it feels incredibly generic.
I never read the Manhwa/web comic, so my impressions are entirely from the anime.
Characters have SOME appeal, but not a whole lot. They mostly feel like tropes rather than proper characters, and thus they tend to feel flat. Desir at least isn't a completely boring protagonist, as he has some interesting powers and tries to look out for the few close friends he had, but he always feels so stereotypical magical protagonist that it kills anything good about him. Romantica just feels like a boring rendition of a tsundere who's whole shtick is that she has a
...
big secret that Desir happens to know about and sympathizes with her for. And Pram feels like an overwhelmingly generic gay swordsman with daddy issues.
The thing is Desir tells you how impressive thy really are, but the animation and storytelling fail to really portray that. They don't have any scenes that really impress, since they mostly either fumble around awkwardly or only ever use their powers to body nobodies you'll never see again.
The magic school element feels like Mashle and Black Clover had a disappointing child, with half the issues in the plot revolving around a class struggle scenario that feels so low effort it's laughable.
And the animation for combat sequences doesn't exactly enamor me enough. It suffers from what most magic-based anime does - people sitting in one spot and pointing at their opponent while giant magical circles appear in the sky around them and start firing magical projectiles. it lacks any sort of appealing choreography or flare to make it interesting. Same goes for the small amounts of sword fighting that's happened so far.
At this point, I'm mostly just watching because Desir has a tsundere fake noble and a half noble twink as his win conditions against the final boss who nuked even the strongest mages of his last life, and that thought alone is enough to amuse me and keep me watching the show.

Easily could have been better, but it feels really amateurish and overly edgy.
The premise and opening episode were what made me want to watch this show, but as time rolls on, I find myself less and less incentivized to watch the entirely predictable plot play out. The writing feels really amateurish, as if it's rushing too fast into so many plot points and not really giving any time to properly connect you with characters or the story. Instead, it tries to either be too edgy or too tragic in every episode and kills what could have been a cool show about a guy getting
...
his revenge on an empire that despised him and his master.
It knee-caps the best aspect of the show within a few episodes, steering away from Adonis's revenge to address other issues that shouldn't have even been a thing until way later in the show. If the show isn't outright bad, then it's mid, with the only good episode being the first one. And because it runs at such break-neck speed through so much plot, it's an almost entirely predictable mess of bland that appeals less and less as time goes on.
If I had to give an analogy, I'd say that this is like chewing gum that loses it's flavor in about five seconds then disintegrates in your mouth. You get a flash of good and then meh.
On the bright side, I at least liked the intro song to this series. So I guess I can add it to one of my playlists.
There are better anime this season, and in general. This is in no way worth your time.

At first, I thought it was interesting. Sure, it gave me Overlord LITE vibes, but it was all right. But things started to spin out of control when more and more of it's premise started to come into play.
If you really want to know my thoughts on it, well....
Characters feel very flat, and it tries to capture the charm of certain tropes but doesn't exactly give me all that much reason to care about them. I feel like the series fails to invest properly in the characters who'd have the most pay off, and that leaves a lot of things incredibly lacking.
The attention feels
...
really scattered. It spends a lot of it's time focusing on the main character, but there are breaks to the POV of other characters that develop no attachment and no interest because the character lacks any charm inherent to themself. In many cases, it feels like the cuts might be entirely unnecessary.
The premise kinda sucks. It's basically a story about game genre vs. game genre. Each character is themed after a different kind of game, but again, the lack of individual charm ends up making the characters feel bland or down right weird. Their powers are, more often than not, just downright bullshit. And usually just feel like thinly veiled plot reasons to have things happen.
The sad thing is that it plays at a cool concept - using strategies from a video game to conquer the world. But it bogs itself down with this idea that every major block in the road has to be based on another kind of game, whether that be an RPG, DND, or a Hentai Game.... The main character has some interesting moments, but he's largely boring and what you would imagine as your stereotypical Isekai protag. He inspires no intrigue as a character outside his knack for strategy.
All things considered, this series is just barely escaping the category of "mid beyond belief" with some last minute saving developments, but it's far too much "Game World Isekai" for me to consider it a good series.
So yeah, it's Overlord for people who enjoy very watered down versions of Overlord. It's nothing incredibly revolutionary or intriguing, and mostly fails to capture a good story beat for the latter half of the four novels I read...

Is it worth a read? Yeah, it is.
It's one of those that's interesting enough to keep you invested in it, even though you know it might not be that "OMG MASTERPIECE" kind of series. The story doesn't try to over-complicate things way too quickly, and instead sticks to exactly what the title suggests - the strange adventures of a broke mercenary. It takes a little while to roll into the meat of the story, and if you don't like a series that burns kinda slow and low (it takes three whole books before you get introduced to a hint of a large scale plot), you
...
might not like it. And when it gets to the story, it seems rather simple even close to eight volumes in - some ancient bad guys are showing up and their powers are pretty much divine.... better go stop them. Or not, because the main characters really don't see it as their problem to solve even though they keep running into these beings when they just want some normal jobs for once.
It's the concept and the characters that keep you invested in the series. While the plot is competent, the character dynamics are more appealing. Loren is a mercenary turned adventurer after a stroke of bad luck obliterates his company. His bad luck continues to chase him as he end up indebted to a demonic priestess named Lapis who's more than happy to exploit Loren's financial struggles for her own gain and takes every opportunity to try and sink him further into debt to her so he's forced to be her adventuring companion. Fortunately for her, Loren's bad luck never goes away - and every job he takes turns disastrously sour and generally results him accruing more medical debt, equipment expenses, and housing fees he just cant afford. Eventually, he just accepts the fact that he's stuck with the scoundrel priest for the foreseeable future. The dynamic between them ends up being that Lapis (far more sinister and conniving than her outwardly appearance would suggest) and Loren (a battle hardened mercenary with a better head on his shoulders than 95% of the other adventurers around him) form an odd friendship between a priestess with a twisted personality and a very cynical, standoffish mercenary with better morals than his "Saintly" companion.
The story is more appealing because of the fun that takes place on the adventure, rather than the adventures themselves. And with the story getting spruced up by some rather unheroic heroes, it makes for a good read. But yeah, the story burns slow and doesn't give much of the "incredible, well structured narrative" vibe.
