I mainly watched the show for the romance. Its one of the only medias that has portrayed a LGBT couple that has a realistic and non-heteronormative dynamic. Like I could actually believe that they were in love with each other. The story telling is probably better in the manga but the anime squandered a lot of its potential. Like I did not care at all about Nezumi's whole village being burned at all. Seriously who care? They never show what and who he lost exactly nor do they show the conditions that he endures during his years long capture. They should've made the stakes higher
...
for how dramatic the opening scene was. I know he was suppose to awaken that goddess thing, but I could not care at all about that since they developed it within ten minutes of exposition by some old man. I get that there are only 11 episodes but these are important questions. They could have just thrown out the whole Forest people idea and have Nezumi's hatred be justified in a less contrived way. I feel like Safu could have been developed more because she isn't a terrible character, and I was interested in her relationship with her grandmother. But anyways, I really enjoyed the romance and Shion's character. Shion relates heavily to Safu's grandmother in their melancholic attitude towards the boring lives that they lead. They can feel as if something is wrong from the beginning, and you don't question as to why Shion decided to save Nezumi. I think they should have expanded on Shion's mother's relation with the founders of NO.6 and how she affected and influenced Shion's thinking process in the first place. I enjoyed his development, especially when he declares to Nezumi that he wants to be his equal. There's nothing more I love in a relationship than two people who learn from one another and grow on their shared or even opposing journeys and goals. Their shared attraction began from the first time they met and I think its so cute and believable that they fell in love. On the other hand... I'm not sure why Safu HAS to be in love with Shion. I never felt the chemistry from them really and she even points that out by saying that they're on different paths. Maybe if they showed some scenes where Shion did something for Safu in their childhood that made her love him? Or hint to it in their childhood at all like they did with one single day that Nezumi shared with Shion. I just wish the show gave me more material on Safu to work with.
