First of all, I'd like to clear one thing - this review is my personal opinion only and it could be crude.
Lets start, ok?
How should I say it....The very first thing that came to my mind was: "Ah! It's like one of Haruki Murakami novel"...Strange, complicated, pressing. It's a slice of life, but you can't believe that...and in the same time you assume, that in someway it could be. You don't fully understand, partly you don't like, but you keep reading.
Same here. (First 5 episodes for sure)
Honestly speaking, I am not a big fan of such genre, well, not quite right..I like suspense and
...
mystery, I like make my brains work, but I don't like to screw them. I also don't like pressing melancholic mood, especially if I don't see serious reasons for it. So when I watch such stuff, I usually say: "Huh?/What?/Kill yourself, already./Say it!/Get drunk!/Get a hobby!"
MnH wasn't an exception. I've started to understand the story on the 5th episode, lost it on the 6, and regain..on 8th. Of course, everything became clear in the end, but you have 12 episodes before it.
I'm not sophist , and I'm not good in reading between the lines, in this case, I'm afraid it's more like reading between lines that are between lines.
Nevertheless. I'll give the story 8.99/10
It's complicated, but interesting. Like I said, MnH is a case when you keep watching in order to understand. You lose the thread, you rewatch some moments, you desperately want to know what's going on. You'll get tired, because of it, as well. Especially, if you know nothing about japanese folklore and japanese is not your native language.
Characters...8-9/10
Two main girls are...annoying. Maybe, I'm too old, but this shoujo ai "I love my best friend, she's an Angel" obsession is not what I like. It's delusional in the worst way.
All female heroines are mentally unwell, more or less.
Male characters...are interesting, but... sadly, there is not much information about them. If for example, you can see what kind of person Kiba-kun is, you can try to imagine things about Chuuzenji, you can try to make your brains work in Sekiguchi's case..But when it comes to Enokizu, you simply have no work material.
There also (though, I might be wrong here), jumpy character development. There is no much of showing the process of ''how he/she became like this", it's more like "and after that he/she became like this", in other words, MnH shows only "turning points", which I don't find very satisfactory.
Music: 9/10
Very good.
Art: 9/10
Looks very decent to me. Solid and quite realistic.
Enjoyment...7/10
Mouryou no Hako is like a dream. A muddled, confusing, sometimes realistically unrealistic, sometimes unrealistically realistic one.
It screws your brains, it leaves lots of questions..it makes you want to re-watch, or better, read the original story.
On the second thought, maybe it's me who complicates things and this story is quite simple?
Overall: 9/10
* Chuuzenji's monologue about demons and moryo was very informative.
* No matter how you look this story is not ordinary, but quite refreshing.

I really wanted to give this anime a good score, but I can't. There is no way, I can possibly do it.
When it comes to "reverse harem" anime, you know before hand that plot won't be the strongest point, as well as the Heroine. You can guess that with 99.9% possibility she'll be submissive...more like devoted masochist, hopefully just silly, but in reality, plain stupid airhead with pure heart and zero precaution.
So we have it all here. But what makes this anime worse than others? How should I say it....Although, I said that RHA' plot not it's strongest point...at least it does exist..Here...I doubt.
...
*on the second thought* Ok-ok....Mayyyyybe....it does exist, but(!) because of episodes' duration you can't say it for sure. Only a very skilful writer can fully disclose the story in such short time. Sadly enough, the story itself is, frankly speaking, mediocre and 15 minutes per episode simply killing it.
This whole thing is a"live version" of otome game. But, trust me, you can play it and get more joy and satisfaction than from watching this anime.
From the very beginning male characters are popping out of nowhere(almost literally), declaring their rights on Female and, while giving her mental or physical torture somehow develop THE FEELING.
What makes it worse, there is no escape. From one male character to another..from one torture to another...They are all jerks. It's a masochist's paradise! I get it..it's a concept...but it's suffocating.
All 12 episodes you have to watch the Heroine, being treated like an object, a thing...and what makes it even worse she gladly accepts it. I guess, when it comes to game you can tolerate it to the certain level, cause, in the beginning you choose your "Prince Charming" and all you do is dealing with him. But here it's not one, but 6 at once!
Male characters are stereotypical, we have: vulgar and narcissistic alpha-jerk; perverted playboy; little yandere; lazy and laid-back a.k.a the mysterious one ; cool and strict with glasses; delinquent, probably, tsundere(?). But they are also sadists...and vampires.
What's good here? Well, Art is decent...and Music....is not bad either.
In the end..well, if you've got nothing to do, than you've come to the right place, otherwise....you won't lose anything if you skip this stuff.

You can't watch this movie without a sad smile on the face. It's a charming story about...youth. Middle school period of life, when days are longer, grass is greener and the future is brighter. First love, first confession (successful and not very), first questions to yourself, first attempts in something. As it was expected, Ghibli with it's magic powers brings out you own memories and forgotten wishes from the same age. Light bitterweet melancholy fills the room, while you keep watching this movie.
I can not guaranty, but something tells me that after the last scene most of you will sigh and think "Ah,
...
I wish, I could meet that fat cat too"..or something like this.

It's my first review, so, please don't be too strict. (Beforehand, I'd like to apologize for all mistakes that I could overlook m(_ _)m)
Ok, here we go...
Story: 9/10
"Reminds me of "Beck"- that was my first thought after the first episode. "Nope, it's closer to "Honey and clover"- was my thought after the second episode.Right now, I don't actually care about this anymore.
Basic things: 'school','friendship','love','joint interest'. It should seem to be nothing new. Then what's so great about it? Why do I continue to watch it? Sincere realistic story. I think that's the main point. It should seem, ordinary, even stereotypical thing, yet..it looks real. Right
...
now, though I've watched only 10 episodes and I don't know where this story will go. I've got a feeling that it actually could have happened. It's hard to say what exactly makes me think like this..Who knows. But the fact that I do believe in it, makes this anime brilliant in my eyes.
Art: 7/10
Soft colours deepen the 'retro' atmosphere. Characters look not too realistic nor too embellish. Hm.. reminds me of 'Paradise Kiss', 'Baccano' and 'Beck'.
Sound: 8/10
Jazz..should I add something? If you're not a fan of it, this anime will make you like it :)
Character: 8/10
What I really like about them, that they seems to be real. Just normal girls and boys.
(Accent makes them even more adorable)
Enjoyment: 9/10
Like listening to a retro record...It brings some thoughts about past and present. Was it better back than? Maybe nothing has changed..or maybe...
Sad thoughts, pleasant thoughts. Like a jazz music, this anime will relax you and make your calm mind just drift on the waves.
